Deleted bootcamp, and reinstalled windows 8.0 and updated perfect to 8.1 now....who knows. Only thing I can think of that May have caused it, I used winclone to clone and restore my bootcamp drive. Anyone else here with this issue use winclone?

I used Winclone, and had trouble updating. I don't want to reinstall, though. That was the point of Winclone. Hopefully it gets fixed.

Out of curiosity, did you use sysprep before using winclone? I didn't because it was going back on the same computer(resizing bootcamp), thought I read somewhere that doing sysprep changes something in the boot sequence so it recognizes the new hardware, just a thought.

Just keep in mind that if you restore using winclone after installing windows 8.1 you go back to windows 8 or whatever you cloned.

For an update:

I deleted the bootcamp partition, installed windows 8 using windows 8 iso and my original upgrade key (it worked, read on). After it was finished, it deactivated itself and removed the key used. I installed bootcamp 5.0. I upgraded windows 8 to 8 using the same upgrade key, opting to preserve nothing. I had to reinstall bootcamp 5.0. I then upgraded to windows 8.1 successfully, then opted to reinstall bootcamp 5.0 because I have heard of some issues. Well, this caused that old dimming issue.

I'm pretty sure that the windows 7 install I did caused some issue with the partition as nothing related to 8 this time caused any partition errors or boot errors. This should help prevent future problems.

Anyone know how to resolve the dimmed screen issue?

Brightness fix found, install current drivers, reboot, go into device manager, disable "default monitor," reboot. Controls are restored after bootcamp manager starts. Everything seems to be working vanilla now.

I ain't doing all that lol. I'm not sure it was the fact that you had win7 though. Some people are getting this from a win8 install also. I think it worked because you installed bootcamp 5.

I have bootcamp 4, what does it take to get 5? Do you need to have the latest macos? If so, I give up. Does upgrading boot camp affect your windows install? Do you have to reinstall windows?

I don't know what sys prep is.

My problem was happening with boot camp 5

I don't know what sys prep is.

Recommended for win clone when migrating to a new computer. Explained here.

That may be true…don't know what. I have restored a windows 7 partition using winclone. That may be our culprit.

Checked the partition layout in windows 8 and nothing is different. It started with the same four and ended with the same four. I'm going to start a poll to see if Winclone may be the issue.

*edit: Poll is up
