Don't think its a good name myself, but if I was one of your PC friends... I would promtly kick you in the balls, and then laugh while your rolling on the floor because I don't control what MS uses for their names; nor could I contol my forceful leg spasms.
Excellent post. :p

I don't mind this name at all. What's so bad about it. Windows Vista. I'd call it something different, but it's not terrible. There could be worse names.

My mom.

No, but seriously, I do.

Next year (or the year after), I'll have to put up with 500+ users whining about 'needing'
Windows Vista. I guess any name would be annoying, but something like Windows 2007
would be better.

How is it pronounced? Veesta? Or Vihsta?

500+. Damn I feel sorry for you now. Well maybe it won't make it's debut till 2008.

Windows Pasta?

Ha! Somebody beat me to the photo :D

A whole new name and a new world of senseless puns! Almost as much fun as new product Tuesday :D

And they're announcing the new name over a year early, so any hype it generates will die back long before any part of Longhorn sees the light! Weird timing. (I bet they wish they'd picked a better codename so they could stick with it longer and unveil the real name closer to the intended "big splash.")

I think it's a decent name though, with a conceptual connection to the word "window" etc.

All of those PC junkies will care when they're running Vista and we're running Leopard. Which one sounds cooler?

And we all know that, in the end, Vista will turn out to be just another buggy version of Windows, "built on the strength and stability of XP", but it will still have the same security holes, virus problems, instability and the like. Bill Gates will look like a complete fool (wait, he already does) when his promise of "no more spyware" turns out to be another Micro-lie just for some temporary confidence in Microsoft. There won't be more security, and Vista will only be a bigger disappointment that XP.

Bring on the switchers!

Not sure if anyone noticed the ads on this page but I found this one interesting. There is no mention of Apple in the article, but we see the Tiger "X"

actually i think Vista sounds cooler. i dont mind the name. i liked the name Longhorn, but there is no way they'd keep that, its a code name. I'm not really a big fan of the whole cat naming scheme Apple seems to love.

I'll be downloading the beta and running on my windows desktop whenever it comes out, but i've been using my powerbook as my main computer since i got it in like april.

That sounds dumb.

Hope Microsoft don't keep this whole "fancy words for view" names for the OS, we could see a whole bunch of dodgy names:

2008 - Windows Landscape

2010 - Windows Prospect

2012 - Windows Spectacle

It's odd to think that the next Windows OS won't appear until at least 2008, probably later, in the meantime we get Leopard and possibly Ocelot (don't know, just reckon it sounds cool). Vista will probably be somewhere between Panther and Tiger, maybe closer to Tiger, Leopard will blow it away and Ocelot will tear it to shreds. I hope 10.5 is going to be a really massive release, Tiger is good and all but it's not quite as immense as the jump from 10.2 to 10.3 was.

On a side note, there was a post back here about a guy who had been away for 2 years and had missed the whole "Panther" thing and was just off to upgrade to Tiger, imagine the change going from 10.2 straight to 10.4 after so long with Jaguar....That'd be cool.

Vista.

I suppose it's no more unrelated than cat names... but it just seems "extra" cheesy. Oh well... It's not like they're going to change it. And considering the length of their product cycle, we're likely to be exposed to Vista for at least 5-7 years.

So we can look at it but not eXPerience it? :p

Slashdot  :

Oh and Microsoft will now be suing the following cities for copyright infringement:

Vista, CA
Vista, MO
Vista, FL
Vista, IA
Vista, MN
Vista, MT
Vista, NM
Vista, NV
Vista, NY

Asta la vista baby!

Hmm...

1) Longhorn has been changed to Vista.

2) Vista means 'view'.

3) It's still a long way off - and it was called Longhorn, so we wouldn't be out of line calling it 'Long View'.

4) 'Long View' is a song by the band Green Day.

5) Green Day released an album called 'Dookie'.

6) Dookie is a slang term for feces (i.e. crap).

llama :D

Wow, you must be really good at playing games like "6 degrees to Kevin Bacon".

Vista:

1. An unincorporated community of southern California north of San Diego. It is a resort and agricultural area. Population: 71,872.
(interesting)

2. An awareness of a range of time, events, or subjects; a broad mental view

Yeah that sounds like M$... broad mental view of closed, proprietary systems.

hih, some quotes from teh nyys:

"The software giant spent roughly eight months researching potential names for the upcoming version of Windows."
I mean... LOL!

"Among the key features of Vista are a new searching mechanism, lots of new laptop features, parental controls and better home networking. There will also be visual changes, thanks to Avalon, ranging from shiny translucent windows to icons that are tiny representations of a document itself."
Sounds quite familiar. But could icon-sized 5 meg Word document threaten Apples position?!

cnet informed that it will also have things called "virtual folders". Spotlight smart-folders, I assume.

Vista.... that is a really awful name.. Longhorn is much better IMO

I agree with that. I liked Longhorn better, Vista sounds like a Sunday afternoon community TV show. Lame.

So whats going to be so great about this OS? Are they finally going to get rid of the Start Menu? I really think that thing is dumb.
