I KNEW that name rung a bell... being as old as I am.
There already WAS a Vista, by Oldsmobile.
It was somewhat a failure as car models go (total sales, etc.)... and history DOES repeat itself.
Can I interest you in a cherry '72 Olds Vista?
My take: We will see install boxes of MS Vista in garage sales before the end of this decade.

cnet informed that it will also have things called "virtual folders". Spotlight smart-folders, I assume.

No, Spotlight's smart folders are just saved searches-- Windows 2000, XP, and Windows Desktop Search already have that. Virtual Folders in Longhorn are self-populating views that behave like real folders (you can drag things into them and they exist in a heirarchy) and they have RSS feeds so you can track when new files (or items) are added, removed, or changed.

It's far beyond Apple's Smart folder concept (which also appeared in Longhorn Alpha circa 2003).

"Among the key features of Vista are a new searching mechanism

Microsoft claims Apple stole the concept of Desktop Search (emails, contacts, extensible formats etc.) from their Longhorn and Office demos in 2003.

Next time you use a PC with Office 2003, XP, or 2000 on it try going to File-> File Search. It gives you a desktop search task pane that searches all your emails, contacts, networked folders, etc. It ties into the native indexing service in Windows 2000 and XP. It fully supports new file types and metadata via ifilters too. The normal XP search will also pick up those emails, contacts, and appointments once Office is installed (office has the ifilters within it). It has live queries (results that update while the search is open), saved searches, and many other features. The only major thing it doesn't have that Spotlight has is search-as-you-type.

Vista (n). A view into the distance, if I'm not mistaken...

actually i think Vista sounds cooler. i dont mind the name. i liked the name Longhorn, but there is no way they'd keep that, its a code name. I'm not really a big fan of the whole cat naming scheme Apple seems to love.

Leapord does sound a bit poo, doesn't it? Tiger is quite a cool cat, as it goes, but leapord? I associate it with really tasteless clothing and rugs? Also we've gotta be running ut of cats soon?

OS X 10.7 - Tabby
OS X 10.8 - That one from the neighbours that had its ear bitten off in a fight
etc.
OS X 10.9 - Kitten

Since the time between an OS X update is so short, and the comparitive changes are so few (If you go with each upgrade cycle, Windows is much cheaper), then Small cat names might be more appropriate?

(dons flame-retardant jacket - I still prefer my Mac, I just know when people are making money from me)

I'm surprised they chose the name Vista - especially since that's already the name of the computer system at the VA medical centers (at least, that's the framework the medical information system runs on). Seems like a copyright infringement to me...

I mean... LOL!

If your product was going to be the most used of it's kind in the world, wouldn't you spend the time making sure the name of the thing is professional, yet easy on the non-professional's ears, have a good positive meaning, etc etc.

Yeah, but if you debated for 8 months would you pick something like Vista? I wonder what the ideas that DIDN'T make it sounded like. "Windows Spagetti! The future of DLL hell is here TODAY (or in 2006 or 2007 or whenever)"

Technically the cat names are the code names of the OSes, much like Longhorn was Windows Vista's code name. Apple just doesn't bother giving them a new name and it sticks. They use it in marketing because its a lot easier than marketing OS X 10.4!

And the ability to actually find what you are looking for within a reasonable time frame (inside 30 seconds say). I use XP every day at work and I can count the times that it's found what I'm looking for on the fingers of one hand. It's quicker to go to the 5 folders that what you want might be in and open up each document.

The RSS-like feeds to tell you when a 'Smart Folder'/Virtual Folder has changed do sound interesting though. I'm not sure I understand why you might want drag other things into it though or is not really virtual like that? Isn't that just like creating an alias or shortcut currently?

So we can look at it but not eXPerience it? :p

Oh and Microsoft will now be suing the following cities for copyright infringement:

Vista, CA
Vista, MO
Vista, FL
Vista, IA
Vista, MN
Vista, MT
Vista, NM
Vista, NV
Vista, NY

Asta la vista baby!

Hmm...

1) Longhorn has been changed to Vista.

2) Vista means 'view'.

3) It's still a long way off - and it was called Longhorn, so we wouldn't be out of line calling it 'Long View'.

4) 'Long View' is a song by the band Green Day.

5) Green Day released an album called 'Dookie'.

6) Dookie is a slang term for feces (i.e. crap).

llama :D

Shouldn't you footnote those Slashdot lifts?

Microsoft needs to dump the Windows moniker. It has too much negative baggage. If they actually made substantial changes to the OS, like Apple did from 9 to X, then they could just call it Microsoft Vista OS..

again, with such a huge market, all the non-computer literate people out there would be in the stores going "wait, i want Windows, what happened to Windows". imagine all the people at best buy, compusa, etc saying that. it would be annoying as hell to try and explain to a huge number of people out there who associate "Windows" with being the pc.

There in is why Windows/Microsoft will neer be able to be inovative. They cant afford to make massive overhals. Heck, when they dropped DOS I thought there would be a riot. Even with DOS dropped, the OS still sucked.

I'd say a large part of the market doesn't even realize they're running Windows. It just came with their computer. I'd guess that 95% of Windows users never upgrade their OS. They just buy new computers and run whatever OS comes on it, assuming that their software will work with it.

They've officially announced development of Vista today.

Oh, is THAT their angle, eh?

What? Overdue? How can you say the next release of Windows has been delayed? We've only been working on Windows Vista for one day now!

XP is easier than "Vista"

But Vista sounds like it will be cool for like, 10 minutes after install.

Hah! When I mentioned the new name to my wife, her first comment was "Wasn't there a car named that?" Sounded vaguely familiar to me, too, but a quick Google search didn't turn one up... because it was too obscure, apparently.

My first reaction was WindowsVista... AltaVista? As if the old search engine has come back to haunt Windows. Perhaps some sort of subtle Microsoft in-joke about its new search features. (AltaVista still provides a pretty good media search, actually.)

...and still, it will include those silly "microsoftish" chimes you hear everytime when you do anything. I hope Apple isnt going down that road, I hate that "copy" sound in Tiger, and God bless Tinkertool for turning those GUI sounds off.
