Back to Windows though... despite nobody in the house (I'm a student renting with some mates) owning a Windows 7 machine, I've had a few goes on it and apart from the extensive list of things lifted and poorly implemented form OS X and Ubuntu/Debian, it runs quite well. Though that said, the machine I was using was a Quad-core behemoth with 8GB RAM...

i'm curious as to what aspects of windows 7 do you think were lifted from osx? i use both and i see very little difference in terms of design and usability.

Well, I just installed Windows on my computer via bootcamp and I must say that I now remember why I turned to mac. The overall experience, and all the updating and whatnot that must be done even before really being able to do anything in the OS is such a pain in the ass. I installed windows solely because I wanted to play a few games. My macbook runs it like a dream, and it is by far the fastest windows experience I've had since ever owning any windows shipped system. But still, the speed alone does not make up for all the crap that comes along with owning or using a windows made OS. I must admit that windows 7 is by far the nicest and easiest to use Windows release in some time, but its still windows, and that still means, viruses, system slow downs after mere weeks, and all the hassle that comes along with it. I am in no way a mac fanboy, but after going back to windows for just a few hours, it makes me love my mac side of my HDD all over again.
ok... first of all you're installing windows on bootcamp as a fresh install, which is why you need to download updates and drivers and whatnot. if you bought from another OEM like dell, acer, hp, etc. they would have it pre-installed just like OSX. so you're really making a bad comparison there

i've also never had any problems with viruses on windows.. if a user just exercises any bit of internet common sense at all, he shouldn't have any trouble. and my macbook has definitely slowed down after mere weeks as i've filled up the hard drive

I've used windows since 3.1 and owned just about every brand of laptop that is out there... Compaq, Dell, Sony, IBM, HP.

I'm extremely grateful to Microsoft for making it affordable for people like myself to have a career in the tech world.

Having said that, here are my 11 reasons why I made the switch to mac and I doubt I'll ever be a dedicated windows user again:

1. tired of windows slowing down over time. I really had it when I was trying to show one of my applications to a potential client and windows just wouldn't respond when most needed.

2. tired of dealing with viruses that would kill my productivity, when all I wanted to do is my work.

3. I refused to switch to windows vista and just about every new laptop that I considered upgrading to, came with vista.

4. worse mobile experience was with a windows mobile by cingular

5. switched to the iphone mainly for google maps

6. loved the iphone experience so much, I bought a MSI wind netbook to try mac os (hackintosh)

7. loved the mac os experience, bought me the real deal 13" macbook unibody. A downgrade in screen size from HP 17", but an upgrade in speed, stability and portability

8. upgraded my macbook to a 500GB hard drive and still love it

9. upgraded my macbook to 4GB of RAM and still love it

10. the mac just works for me every time I need it and now I wonder why why why, did I take the billy pill for so long

11. every time I see a windows user complain and struggle with windows, it motivates me to keep telling all my friends and family members to just get a mac.

I've been wanting to get this out of my chest for a long time :)

I was well aware that that is why I needed to install any additional software or drivers. Thats not the beef I have with windows. Its all the other crap that comes with it. Having to defrag, the unavoidable slow downs after little usage, the malware, spyware, and countless viruses. I know how to keep myself protected, but there are always things that find your way into your system no matter how well protected or knowledgeable you are. Btw, with those OEM copies, you get a whole whack of crap software and trials that are completely useless and further worsen the windows "experience".

Same here. Graduated from Amiga straight to Mac, and even dabbled in RISC OS (Acorn) at work, but never had to go near Windows. Thank cod. :)

Amiga! Risc Acorn! Oh my!
Stuff i wanted to mess with back in the day but never did!! Man.. I was running my Dos based Iniquity BBS and always heard people say how cool
Amigas were : )
I miss the old days. :)

Life is too short to become your own Windows IT tech, and hunt viruses, backup, reformat and reinstall every few months.

I agree wholeheartedly. I spent the past decade using Windows and going through absolutely every problem or hiccup that the software had. Well, I never used Me edition. Heard I didn't miss much. I went straight from 95
to 98se then to XP Professional. Before that is was Windows for Workgroups
3.11 or whatever.

Yah it was so much fun logging into efnet and talking with my fellow ansi
artist pals back in the day and having them pwn my windows/dos box with
winnuke attacks.
LOL
gcc -o winnuke.c
yay.
I'd go into the chatroom and be like "Are you compiling your nuke scripts for meh?" ahhaha I didn't get picked on too much though. : ) I did however feel better when they patched that system exploit.
The blue screen of death gave me a headache! ahhah
:D

your right, your no fanboy, your worse (not being rude), i've been using windows for a long time, i'll be one of the first to say it has faults but from what you've wrote i dont think its anything to cry about,.

your saying that your games run faster, guess what its a faster cpu, the hardware dont make your mac any better, its all software; why do you think folks are trying to run mas os on pc platform.

am glade you've found mac, am still using windows xp and now 7, some software will only work in xp (same thing with mac os). i do a clean install maybe twice a year, i collect a lot of data, do know i have to install everything all over again yes, do i cry about it, no.

i see people crying about the mac os on here and other forums too but guess what its not perfect, is it better at what its meant to do, yes, should you go singing i see the light, your choice, extremely boring IMO, if acdsee is not cutting it i've move to photoshop or something else, should i cry about acdsee, hell no, move on be happy, nothing new here.

i reinstall because i want to not because i have to, if your still getting virus these days you suck, maybe you need a pacifier too..

*looks around college student lounge*

Nope. They're all Dell and Toshiba laptops, except for a single macbook over in that corner. And it seems like everyone's using their horrible virus infected PC's productively. I'm sorry you dislike your Windows experience, but let's not generalize, some people *me* don't have any issues running Windows 7 on anemic hardware.

agree to your wisdom, i've been using win pc for at least 23yr and i can say for sure its done what i wanted, virus count less than three for sure and that was over 15 yr ago (dumb ass friend fault)..

Well First off, I would say that better hardware does make a computer, Any computer for that matter run faster. In no way did I say that that wasn't true. Also, in no way was I crying, I was simply reiterating the fact that OSX is a much more pleasant experience than any windows Experience I have had. I also can see your point about people trying to run OSX on windows shipped or custom built systems, But for the most part they do that because they do not want to pay the price for an apple built system. I fail to see any points you made in your post that actually had anything to do with what I said. Btw, I also never said that OSX didn't have any flaws, because there is a few things that I think need to be addressed, but not nearly as many as windows.

On a side thought, Why do you reinstall if you don't have to? I'd like to know your reasoning behind that?

You JUST installed Windows, and you're assuming it's going to slow down in "mere weeks?" Maybe you should wait and see...

Sorry, I should have clarified, I have had it installed for about 2 weeks now, and I have already noticed a bit of a slow down. Also prior to this windows installation, I have had numerous windows system suffer the inevitable slow down that windows machines are susceptible to. I can't speak for everyone, but I know of a lot of people who suffer the same slow downs that Im speaking of.

Anyone care to talk of their experiences with the slow downs I have talked about?

Fair enough, and I can definitely relate to the slow downs you're talking about. Vista was a nightmare for me, but tbh, I only realized what a nightmare it was once I upgraded to Windows 7 (which I'm hoping does not slow down as quick as your installation did :p)

Windows 7 has been quite pleasant for me, it feels a lot snappier and a bit more intuitive than Vista. I still love OS X though :D

Thanks for reminding me how much nicer the OS/X experience is. I was getting these thoughts in my head of building a Windows 7 machine. :D

I do wish there were some other companies that did the hardware and software. IT would good competition and provide some more choice.

I do like windows 7, and if my installation of it did not slow down as it already has, than I would like it even more. As far as windows goes, 7 is by far the best thing they have ever put out. They definitely have righted whatever wrongs they may have had in the past, for the most part anyway. But windows as a whole is becoming dated, and they soon will need to incorporate better more efficient and secure technologies to build on. As far as Im concerned though, for the most part, vista should have been what 7 is.

Reinstalling two times a year, is two more times a year then I have to with my mac.

There is something to be said about time having value, be it personal or professional. I use OS X because I do not want to spend a night or two, or a weekend reformatting and reinstalling, I would rather get productive work done, or goof around playing a game or spend time with my family, thats what , to me, justifies the extra cost of a Mac. It gives me time to do what I want, not another chore to do around the house.

including OSX not just my PC, like i said i do it because i want to not because i have to, if your spending a nite or two and weekends formatting and reinstalling, you need help, if your going to dump on anything be truthful or admit you know siht about anything.
like i said i dont think windows is the best but dont dribble crap here..

as for people crying about vista, oh really, i installed it once then got rid of it freaking crap IMO but i keep reading vista this, vista that (on a laptop for crying out loud, how dumb can you be),. a friend just bought a IBM, it came with vista, guess what within a week he was back to XP, dont cry about it, do something its not like you dont have a option. if you choose to use crappy software dont cry about it later, dont hate, move on life is good,..

OP yes you are crying, thats it, i have no more, for now:eek:, COD MW2 is calling, online play is up:D.

Who are you to tell me what I know or dont know. What I know from MY Windows experience was that I would have to back up, reformat and reinstall a couple of times a year, that to me is time wasted, if you dont feel that way, I really dont care, to me it is time I could be doing a lot of other things. Yes it take me a day or two to completely get my machine back to where it was with applications, plug ins, patches that had to be downloaded, installed and restarted.

Since I have a life, I could not dedicate 8 straight hours, I like to go out, I like having a life, so it would take me a couple days.

who am i, am the guy telling you, you dont know spit, what dont you get:cool:,. if your backing up, why didnt you clone the drive when you have everything the way you like it. seriously why do people cry and complain after the fact. am not picking on you but your complaint is annoying. am not defending windows at all, maybe i am lucky to have had problems that i could take care of myself,.

my spouse got her dell 5 yr ago, never had a virus on it, never had to reinstall windows ever, i should defrag the hdd, other than that it works fine and she's not the only one, my laptop run fine for yrs with no issue. its your bday so cry if you want to, doesnt mean anyone else have to hear it.

The computer must not have been used much or was only used offline. Otherwise I call BS.

My Dell desktop ran the same time frame with the same record, online from the day I got it, through four years of college and a little bit there after as well. Got it 2002, retired it 2007. WinXP with Kaspersky virus scan, and it never reported an infection/never got bogged down by malware.

You just have to be smarter with Windows to avoid infections and whatnot. The computer was used daily through 2006 with light use in 2007. Never once reformatted the HDD or re-installed WinXP, only updates and two service packs as far as OS maintenance goes.

Well you never answered my question as to why you install twice a year? If there is no reason, than why do you do it? Also, I was not crying at all. And I'm very capable of fixing almost any problem that should arise with my computer. Its the time that is needed to fix these problems that I do not want to deal with. A computer should just work, and for the most part OSX does just that. I've had little to no down time with my mac, whereas on windows, downtime is something you must always account for in your schedule. For most people who use their computers quite alot(and I'm not saying everyone) they are going to experience downtime with windows, and for some user, like me, thats just not acceptable.
