CONGRATS for the GOLD to Seth Wescott!!! He is the man!! :) I mean that race was SO CLOSE but he pulled it out right at the end!!! It was awesome to watch!!
He's won every single snowboard cross gold medal in the history of mankind!!

(I never get tired of that lame joke when they add new sports.)

Come to think of it, for a split second he had won every single snowboard cross medal (of any color) in the history of mankind!! Until Radoslav Zidek crossed the finish line too.

Ok Im officially bored with the Olympics, no drama and really nothing to keep me interested. Maybe when women's figure skating starts I will watch but the lack of NBC coverage and the choppiness of the events is a big turn off for me. Its like trying to watch the Superbowl and see 10 minutes then watching 2 innings of baseball and then back the football. I can't follow the coverage and I would rather see them finish one event before they start another. Don't tell me that NBC can't do this as they have 5 networks they can use so I don't want to hear that NBC has no choice but to edit the content. Since its a 6 hour delay I don't see why they cant show some live events at say 11 am our time, Its not like they are gonna lose ratings since they don't have any good ratings to begin with and maybe if they show some stuff in the day when people are up they will get more viewers.

The snowboard cross looked like a lot of fun. What a great spectator sport - it made me want to find a snowboard and some snow...

Read an article on Begg-Smith today suggesting that he's an arrogant poor little rich boy who doesn't have any manners. It also pointed out that although he made his multi-millions it was through pop-up ads on the internet. I must say that if this is true, then I'm taking back some of my earlier admiration - pop-ups are still the bane of my life on my office PC which I can't install Firefox on!

I feel the same way---and I have a snowboard but there isn't enough snow around here to really enjoy it. And there is no one I can talk to about snowboarding with, which is why I have been thankful for this thread and MR!! Actually I take that back, surprisingly my dad called me up the other day and started asking me about "the Flying tomato" (Shaun White) :) ....I thought that was so cool he has been all into snowboarding in the Olympics---he has watched EVERYTHING and he is the one that gave ME my little snowboarding history lesson last night! ;) But when I asked him if he wanted to attend snowboarding camp with me this summer in Oregon he said NO WAY--TOO OLD. He's 60 (very healthy and so strong) and last year when I was thinking about going to the adult camp there was a guy registered who was 53!

Anyway, my goal after I finish my MBA next year is to get a job in the youth action sports or snowboard industry, preferrable working with a creative marketing team at a world class resort so I can snowboard every weekend in excellent conditions!! ;)

MEDAL NEWS ALERT!!!! :) Way to go Lindsey----SHE WON THE SILVER MEDAL for women's snowboarding cross......

"Lindsey Jacobellis had the gold medal all to herself, and fell with just one jump to go. Sweden's Tanja Frieden won the first women's snowboard cross gold."

That sucks she lost her edge and fell but at least she still got the SILVER!!! :) YEAH!! I cannot wait to watch this race tonight!!

Tanja Frieden is not from Sweden, she is from Switzerland.. that's too bad

Go Sweden!!

Jacobellis BLEW her chance at a gold by showboating on the second-to-last jump... apparently grabbed her board unnecessarily, which caused her to fall. All she had to do was slide to the finish and it was hers.

As Homer would say, "D'oh!"

way to blow a sure gold. that's pretty hilarious.

men's figure skating- i just don't understand how the guy who fell twice could win silver, whereas johnny weir just left out a jump or two, and lost to the double faller by many points. yes, i can understand the fact that by removing jumps, he removes max points, and other chances to fall, but it just seemed a bit off.

oh well

Kimmel compared Hannah to Spicoli the other night. It makes you wonder how she communicates on other subjects. :p

What a great ice hockey (women) game between USA - Sweden..

Oh thats kind of funny, I have noticed that about the way she talks and her whole demeanor :D ....and after her first qualifiying run the other night she was doing that "hang ten" or "horns of satan" hand thingy in front of the camera...I have no idea how to distinguish between the different hand signs or anything though!! I am a fan of hers ever since she won x-games in 2004 and at least she is being herself and geez, she is only 19 and grew up around all boys her whole life!!! :)

hang ten/loose is the thumb and pinky. "horns of satan" would be the pinky and pointer finger. "i love you" is the pinky, pointer, and thumb.

i guess i know this cause i'm a guy?

uhhhh I meant she doesn't come off as the most "girly girl" sometimes and Leno was obviously comparing her talk to a surfer dude....she's got her own style going on too...that's all--it had nothing to do knowing hand signs and guys--although I usually see guys making the hand signs! And I just didn't really know what the hand signs meant! :)

Just saw footage of a guy in the aerial freestyle who had somehow "forgotten to secure his skis to his boots." His skis shot off at the top of the jump and he was left doing his twists and turns with no skis.

Thumped into the ground on the landing, very quick transition from funny to nasty. Still pretty funny though.

Lindsey Jacobellis Showboating to Silver; what a sham
Edit: Ooops, sorry clayj, didn't see your post.

Oh gosh...I watched it all...it turned out exactly as I had expected after reading Clay's post. That sucked so bad watching everyone celebrate while she just stood there in complete shock. But to be honest the swtizerland girl ONLY won because of the dumb mistake by Lindsey......she would have never won in other way because of the lead that was there.

These things happen all the time---everytime someone celebrates too soon!

They're just showing replays at the moment, men's downhill combined - just saw my ol' school mate Jono Brauer crash out, poor bugger.

They're talking up that Bode Miller guy - he sounds like a real tool. I hate those brash, outspoken arrogant sports stars, I'd rather watch someone just get on with the business of winning and celebrate without shooting his mouth off about this and that.

I found that hysterical. They were making fun of her on the radio today. Supposedly she said she grabbed her board for stability because she was having problems with that particular jump. The radio jock could barely keep the giggles down as he read her explanation. Then I saw the footage and realized why.

Also, anyone notice it's not going to be the token Canada vs. USA in women's gold medal game? The Swedes goalie was a star in her semi-final. It's amazing news for the sport.

yeah...that move was a full on show off while grabbing the board!!:) I missed some of the interview tonight with her, but I am pretty sure she admits to celebrating TOO SOON....she says she was just trying to have fun with it and totally lost everything over it!!! It was a mistake and I am sure she is fessing up to it---EVERYONE who sees the clip can plainly see the truth!! It would be just stupid to admit otherwise......in a weird way this kind of reminds me of Ashley Simpson and the whole lip syncing thing---the band didn't play the wrong song, she was lip syncing...the minute she admitted the truth everyone shut up about it for the most part!!

Did you read that Tanja Frieden (the Swiss woman who won) and Lindsey Jacobellis had a reversal of fortunes from the 2003 X Games, where Frieden blew her lead on the last jump and was passed for the win by Jacobellis? Perhaps it's ironic justice in a sport where anything can happen.

This is what I didn't like:
At first she [Jacobellis] insisted she did no showboating. She grabbed the board, as she had on other jumps, to keep it from wobbling in the air. .... Later, however, Jacobellis amended her description. She said she wanted to "share her enthusiasm" with the loud crowd...
It's not the crime, it's the coverup!

Just finished watching the overnight taping I did that included the now memorable (for the wrong reason) finals of the snowboard cross with Lindsey Jacobellis losing her 140 foot (equivalent to 3 seconds) lead. It is a painful lesson to live with, but the best thing for those in any final event is for it to be competitive to the very end since that maintains one's intense focus.

Getting swept up in the rush of an imminent gold medal victory can make an athlete succumb to the temptation of placing a special imprint on the race. But when there are no extra points awarded for style or flash, the only signature that results from such a misguided strategy is the one that poses this timeless question: "Lindsey, what the heck were you thinking?"
