So just because two absurdly wealthy entities prop-up each other makes everything OK... fffs xD
They didn't become wealthy by accident. They worked hard to make their money.
The fact that someone becomes wealthy doesn't make him/her a bad person.
It's business. In politics it's the same thing. Countries make alliances to help each other and combine their power for dominance.
This later generation is all about crying and complaining about everything: "Oooh, too poor! Oooh, too wealthy! Oooh, too expensive! Oooh, too cheap! Oooh, I want more choices! Oooh, too many choices! Oooh, why is this one the first choice!". A never-ending whinning loop.

Time to resurrect the name.

Just some thoughts about how to give users a choice but still encourage / steer them toward choosing Google (for a fee of course) without making them go into Settings after the fact.

Although the court hasn't announced remedies yet, it may be that any Google default-related payment to steer users to Google search would be disallowed.

This makes no sense.

DoJ and EU declare Google Apple deal is monopolistic, Apple sees no other product of satisfactory quality, builds its own search engine (essentially mandated by the gov)
then DoJ and EU declares Apple has a search monopoly, must not use its own search engine, just like all the App Store stuff.

The DOJ declared Google to have a monopoly in search and engaged in anticompetitive behavior by its exorbitant payments to Apple, Mozilla, Samsung, etc. to be the coveted pre-set defaults. If Apple created its own search engine, it wouldn't be a search monopoly unless it achieved significant market share. There are no DOJ claims, for example, that Apple has a monopoly in browsers, word processing software, etc.

The issue Apple would potentially face would be related to its mobile OS/smartphone dominance and default settings. Similar to the situation with Microsoft in the 1990s with its desktop OS monopoly and bundling/default browser settings.

and once Apple uses their own search engine in safari, they will be sued once again for monopoly. stupid ruling
Monopolies emerge and they get split, that's regular ruling to have capitalism that doesn't turn into tiranny. nothing stupid about it.

Have you ever been on Google recently? They conquered their position by offering a decent service, now they sold it to the best bid and... we are all still forced to use it because it's the only player with that strenght. And they also did this by simply paying Apple to make the competition less relevant. That's not playing fair and it makes it worse for us.

Thank God the EU doesn't have the same obvious conflict of interest that the US have with their economic, lobbying and governative ties to Big Tech. The US government can't even complain about Musk because they rent his satellites. It's absurd.

Yes, by strategically buying out competition (YouTube, DoubleClick, Maps) and mafia-like pushing own products (have you ever navigated to maing google page not-on-chrome and had to click away like bazzilion popups urging you to ditch obsolete browser? or bundling Chrome in every installer which made it default)?

I don't deny that 10-15y ago google search was awesome at what it was but saying that last decade growth was based on pure merit created only by google is just absurd... they bought YT because they couldn't compete with their own Google Video streaming and made YT virtual monopoly... and now they push more for premium once the competition is gone... All GAFAM do the same - if there is possible competition they buy it before it could threaten them...

In the same vain - FB should have never been allowed to get Instagram and WhatsApp…

I use Startpage. Based in the EU, so user security and privacy already a big deal.
Not so much as with, say, US-based Google or DuckDuckGo.

Apple could fix this by asking the user what they want their default search engine to be when they first use their browser, and maybe once after each major iOS update after that.

I for one am happy with Google.
I don’t want installs/first time setup to be the old days like Windows XP and other old ones. At some point you will end up with 20 prompts what the user wants. Default browser, default search, default music app, etc.

The chemist may have just closed down - in which case providing the name is pointless.
Not releasing you for failure to provide the name sounds like (should be!) a criminal offence.

Its a safety rule here after some people discharged have died. There must be someone to help at home and a supply of your meds on day 2 at home. I have no family so both had to be organised before I could leave.

I despise Google. I used Bing before Bing was any good, just to keep Google out of my life as much as possible. Now Bing is better — especially when searching for images and video — but then again Microsoft also appears to be aiming to be just as bad as Google is when it comes to privacy. And Duck Duck Go is a no no go after we found out there were in bed with Microsoft the whole time. So absolutely I would love to see Apple get into the search business, if only because we know it'll be private, but it'll also be 100x better looking than any other search engine out there.

There's your first problem, your treating the search box in a search engine like you're talking to a sentient being. It's going to find web pages with those words. It's not a chat text box. A better search term would be American Medical Association (AMA) blood pressure guidelines .
Maybe I do not know about the “American Medical Association”. Why one searches. If I knew the information, go directly to the web page. The whole concept about searching one has zero knowledge and is looking for such knowledge. No point having a search engine if I already know the answer.

But that data is fundamentally flawed.

Stage 1 hypertension guidelines are age and country specific. Other countries that are not governed by the FDA's need to sell pills use different ranges. Blood pressure naturally goes up as people age. So what you have here is simply FDA/Government propaganda.

This is exactly the problem with AI, thank you for pointing it out.
Example, clearly says at the bottom of the AI response, need more information. Type USA or China. No need to type more and one get that answer. Thank you for pointing out just how good the AI really is.

Then allow me to disagree with your disagreement. I decided to search for myself (using google) and guess what the first thing popping into view was?
I already did your search. Goggle came up with a list of web pages. Yes, top of list, those that pay the most. Lots of ads, and I was not impressed with how the answer was presented. I received a complete answer, no ads, in 10 seconds. Welcome to the future.

Isn't that what they teach you in business school? Business strategy, you need to be smarted to survive, blah, blah, blah...
If you don't want other rental buildings to compete with yours, you buy the ones around you. Will this move be considered a monopoly? Heck, if people don't like your rent, they can rent somewhere else.

Also, there's no monopoly when other search engines and apps like WhatsApp, instagram, etc. can also exist.

YES. We want functional search back. Google was amazingly good in 1999, it was so much better than, say, AltaVista that it was the only actual search engine to survive.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NOOOOOO!

"AI"/LLM is the exact WRONG way to go. Somebody should leverage ACTUAL SEARCH instead of tossing out garbage approximate (wrong) results. Don't hand out a worthless hallucinated list, hand out web sites. Google's garbage has gotten so bad that no amount of explicitly specifying search terms can avoid the worthless "did you mean" wrong results any more. I'm not using DDG more because it got significantly better, I'm using it because Google got infinitely worse.

Going back to the way things were in 1999 is not an option. Simply indexing and weighing search results based on links like Google did back in the day would result in pages and pages of absolute ******* for every single search due to SEO.

I'm not suggesting a hallucinated list. I'm saying the search should show a real list of real websites, just like Google used to do, but where the websites are selected by AI/LLM to filter out the SEO junk and determine which sites are the real deal versus which sites are just clickbait junk.

Google plans to appeal the decision and the court hasn't provided insight into how it plans to address Google's monopoly, but there is a chance Google will no longer be able to pay to be the default search engine on Apple devices.
There's a lot of room on that screenshot for more choices. Why not just add a box to add one of our own choice. Most browsers allow this, except Safari. And the 5 on the list are definitely not privacy oriented. And whatever you do, don't use Duck Duck Go. It's Bing, along with all the baggage that it has.

Example, clearly says at the bottom of the AI response, need more information. Type USA or China. No need to type more and one get that answer. Thank you for pointing out just how good the AI really is.
It is more than USA or China and you completely ignore the fact that age changes the recommended range in all countries.

You are being too literal. My results were just examples. Hard to cover every aspect. Want to know about race, BMI, weight, hight, age, current medical conditions, physical condition, etc on blood pressure just ask. If AI does not know, will offer suggestions as to where to look.

It turns out facts and truth are literal.

If Apple made their own search engine, it would change the Internet almost immediately. I would use it over Google without question.

AI is the only real search engine ChatGPT. All the rest are nothing more than the old yellow pages electronically updated. AI gives an answer not a list of references. Going forward, todays electronic yellow pages will be a thing of the past. Good riddance. I do more searches today on ChatGPT when I actually would like an answer. Image what the future will be.
No it’s not. It even fails at correctly listing Minecraft crafting recipes.

Sure wish you would read up on what “free markets” are.

(Hint: the absence of government intervention alone does not make “free” a market - even though you may have been conditioned into believing that by your local politicians and political lobbyists)
Why are you bringing politics into this which has nothing to do with this?

Google specializes in search engines and data. They should be able to “sell” their specialized product they worked hard to create. Different topic, but same thing for Apple: they should be able to create the software for their own hardware if that is what they want to do.
