Working out with headphones! and sweat!

Get the Marware hip case and a pair of V Moda Vibe Duos. That's what I use at the gym, and I've had no problems. And I sweat a lot when I do cardio.

I use my iPod touch working out and don't have a problem. I guess maybe it depends what you are doing. I walk the treadmill at a fast pace. I set my iPod touch on the shelf, hit music or video, and go for 30+ minutes. Only problem I get is my ears get full of sweat and makes my headphones slippery. I also wipe my hands and arms alot to soak up the sweat before I touch my iPod.

I can't see spending that kind of money on headphones I'm going to use at the gym and are constantly at risk of breaking from moisture.

Does anyone have anything they use while running or working out that is durable and under $50?

Its not about the phone, I actually have a sports belkin band for my iPhone, but the ear buds are too sensitive to moisture and I think thats what really sucks about them, the clicker starts going crazy doing random things.

why would I want a shuffle? I Can't receive calls or skip songs with a clicker!
Plus The iPhone is to be used anywhere. I also log my workout on my phone.
Something the shuffle can't do.
Agree completely. I have the same armband for my iPhone and use it while working out and running. I can use the timer to time my rests between sets, lap times, run time, etc. The clicker is an excellent way to skip songs as well. I've already ruined one pair of headphones, I have the Skullcandy headphones now but am afraid to use them now for fear of ruining them although they are obviously much better made. Any report on these would be most welcome.

I use my iPhone for practically everything when I'm out and about. And you know what, if I get a call during my workout or run I can actually answer it which is good especially in the case of a potential emergency. There is no reason why I shouldn't be able to use this as my workout partner instead of giving Apple more money for another product that does the same thing only less exclusively for working out.

this happened to my earbuds too:mad:

I run just about daily through the mountains of Japan and there really isn't anyone around, so what i do is turn the iphone upside down in the armband so that the speaker isn't covered and just listen to it that way, it is plenty loud enough. The only problem is that i think my sweat broke the 2nd speaker on the bottom of my phone...:(

just joking ^^ hehe

I bought a Shuffle for running last week.

I would NEVER take my iPhone on a run. I'm not going to answer calls, I don't want it to get wet (rain/sweat/humidity), and I don't want it to drop.

Yes, the iPhone is designed to consolidate devices. That doesn't mean it's the end-all, be-all tool for every task.

I'll risk damage to the sleek, lightweight, and functional $49 Shuffle any day of the week (and twice on Sundays) before I do the same with my $499 iPhone (replacement value). And yes, my iPhone is in a solid case... Switcheasy Capsule Rebel.

You ask a simple question.....

I though he wanted a discussion on viable replacment headphones for the gym not a debate about shuffle v's iPhone etc..

I am in the same position looking for a replacement set of headphones for working out. I have not found anything suitable, so would be interested in hearing what other replacment headphones people use. Thanks for the input on the Nike headphones as I saw them the other day and was considering them.

Also perhaps this thread is in the wrong section ?

I have been having the same problem. I run with my iPhone and anytime I am doing Cardio, the headphones with the clicker start making the ipod go crazy once I sweat enough. I have thought about buying an expensive pair of headphones, like the v-moda or the skullcandy iPhon FMJ, but at $70+ per set, I want someone to tell me that they work without the same problems before I drop that kind of cash. Nothing worse than getting halfway through a workout, and then having to stop the music.

Grrrrrr....

I've just gotten the same problem today with the new 'in ear' version of the headphones... this sucks... they should be able to handle a little bit of sweat or have a plastic cover for when you work out!

Just to chime in (given all the idiots on this thread saying "don't sweat as much" and "use a shuffle")...

1.) Some of us don't think we should need to buy a shuffle when we already own a $600 phone that stores far more music. Additionally, when I run I always do it on a treadmill. The iPhone sits on the treadmill's magazine rack perfectly.

2.) Yes, the iPhone earbuds suck for exercise. They fall out and the mic is very sensitive to moisture. Rain, sweat, whatever. I have gone though 2 sets myself because once moisture gets into the mic, it's pretty much useless.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to be moving onto a better set of earbuds (preferably with the mic) for running. The mic's button is invaluable for changing songs.

Oh, and one more thing -- to all those people complaining about sweat... wtf do you think you should be doing while exercising? :p I personally love it when I see someone get on the treadmill, set it to 2 miles an hour, walk an hour and wonder why they're still fat. The purpose of exercise is to stress your body beyond what you'd get from sitting in front of your computer. If you're not sweating, you're not doing your job.

I definitely don't think I would ever go mountain biking or running with my iPhone but I still use the earbuds with my 5G iPod since those earbuds died a couple weeks back.

Hell when these die I'll be out what like 20 bucks from eBay?

You MUST sweat a lot or something....plutonium sweat maybe?

Back from the dead.......

Well, it's months later, and my Vibe Duos are still going strong.

I would rather spend more money on better quality earphones one time than less money on cheaper earphones multiple times (that will probably add up from replacement costs to what I spent on the good earphones).

BTW, I use them all-around, not only for the gym.

I have the same problem when biking to work. The switch stops working and the thing jumps all over.

If you are sweating enough on the way to work to be dripping down along your headphone cords and creating a significant amount of water in the headphone switch, I don't think I want to work with you...

Wow people will complain about anything

Since when are manufacturers responsible for making electronics waterproof

How about making headphones that can be used when you'd most want them (while working out).

I went through 3 iPhone headphones the same way, then I finally bought some cheap Griffin headphones, which still have a clicker, and I haven't had this problem with them at all. Surely Apple can develop a better clicker than a 3rd party peripheral maker. Luckily within the first year, Apple will replace your iPhone headphones as many times as you need.

Oh, and those who don't sweat enough at the gym to have their sweat drip down the cord probably aren't working out hard enough. ;)

I sweat a good amount while running/working out and I've never had a problem with the clicker not working.

My biggest issue is the earbuds getting wet and not staying in my ears. I usually take them out and wipe them a few times before giving up and taking them out. Having something that wraps around the back of my ears would be welcome.

Not even sweat resistant

I am now on my 4th set of headphones. I have gone through 2 of the 3G style headphones and 1 of the 3GS style (with volume control). I don't sweat alot, but I do sweat. I need the iPhone because I need to be able to switch songs, take calls, etc while working out (I ride bicycles). On a 100 mile ride, it just isn't feasible to be without the ability to take calls or change music.

Apple should make these better.

i have gone thru 2 pairs myself.... the guys at the genius bar replace them without any problem

I paid $70 for mine costco. My wife has a pair vmoda sports that we paid $33 for at costco. They sound just as good as mine.

LOL @ the people asking why he sweats so much. Seriously, how many of you live in in a humid environment? I live on the gulf coast and with 99% humidity I sweat my arse off just walking to my car. Yes my iPhone headset does the exact same thing, after 30 minutes of being outside I can no longer make calls or use the voice control. There are a ton of apps made to assist people during runs, workouts and bike rides so it's not unusual to want to use the iPhone during strenuous activity. I have had mine replaced and it has helped a bit, I try to make sure my hands are dry before using the controls.

How about: clipping the corner off of a ziplock bag, punching a small hole in the corner, thread the end of the headphone cord through the hole. Slide the bag down so that it drapes over the switch...tape it up if you need to.

get the apple in-ear from ebay for 40-45$

If you're talking about the new Apple in ears, they have the same problem as the stock iPhone headphones (sweat kills the clicker). If you're talking about the old Apple in ears, they fall out of your ear after 3 minutes of use (not good for the gym) and don't have any way to change tracks.
