Went for a simple well known route to me yesterday evening and the new beta worked great. I like a lot of the new little things as well.

Longer run on a few unfamiliar trails this weekend so will see how that goes…
For what its worth long run on new territory worked great. No real issues to speak of at all.

This happens if you select a route when starting a workout but not if you select a route in the settings at any time. Then you need to unselect it manually.

Makes sense, thanks.

PS - just returned from a two-week trip to the mountains, and about halfway through the trip, the app updated to version 6.0 (9). Since then, battery usage has noticeably decreased. I don't know if you've changed anything regarding power management, but while previously it was a constant 10% per hour, no matter what, every hike always 10%, after the update, it's more like 9%, and in some cases even 8%. It might not seem like a drastic change, but on a 10-hour hike, it means an extra 1-2 hours of battery life 👍

I am glad it is using less power but I don't think I changed anything in that version of the beta that would affect battery usage. Generally the software doesn't have as much effect on battery usage as the hardware (screen, sensors etc).

It could be that you are looking at the screen less now that you are more familiar with the new features in the beta. You can check by going to the last tab for a workout and changing it to show the log. Then scroll down to the bottom to see the percentage of time that the screen was active.

Interestingly, activities from the first week (before the update) have around 3% screen time (2.9-3.3), while later activities with lower power consumption are more in the 3.5-4.0% range.

I also checked the GPS signal, since in the first week there were more routes leading through couloirs etc, which I suspect reduces signal quality and increases power consumption for locating satellites, but all routes are within 3-5 meters of average accuracy.

That scuppers that theory then. It could be the GPS. As you say acquiring the satellites takes more power than when they are acquired, so it could use more power in an area with poor reception.

Unfortunately there are so many variables that it is hard to know what is affecting power usage, but I am glad it has improved.

There has also been a Watch OS update in the last few days or week that could have impacted battery.

Yes, I am aware of that, that's why I don't delve into this topic too much, I just enjoy these extra 1-2 hours :)

I didn't update WatchOS while on hiking trip, it's not a good time (I wouldn't update WOD either, but Testflight did it automatically)

EDIT: PS - regarding the previously mentioned issue - is it possible to pause the activity and charge the watch - yes, I confirm, it works without any problems :)

I've created a hiking route in Strava, then exported it as GPX and also tried TCX. Both times the latest Beta says

The route does not contain any navigation waypoints. Would you like to add them.

When I use Strava for biking and send it a Garmin 840 I get routing, am I missing something obvious to do at all?

Hello, I've been using the running app for several years. The only option I'm really missing is the altitude profile for trail running when I've imported a GPX. Just to know where I am in the elevation gain and what the climb or descent is. Planned for a day? I apologize if this has already been discussed.

This will be in the next version of the app, which will be released soon.

As far as I know Strava do not include turn by turn navigation in their exported files. I wish they did. They send a different format with their connections to Garmin devices.

Will it be a completely separate screen, like ClimbProfile?

I've noticed that most metrics expand to provide additional information when you tap them, but on one of the screens I have the RouteElevationProfile (composed of two adjacent segments – a great option, BTW), but when I tap it, nothing happens. And I was just thinking it would be nice if it provided additional information in the form like the Garmin on photo above.

It is a metric like any other so you can configure a screen that contains it and any other metrics that you want.

Ah, my mistake, I assumed the "next version" meant the next beta and that you were going to add something more than RouteElevationProfile, when in fact you meant the next version in the App Store :)

Will tapping RouteElevationProfile metric enlarge the graph to full screen at some point?

Thanks, whatever you've done to magically add them at a click of a button appears to work well from looking at the map, will find out on Saturday!!

That should happen, or something similar at least. If you tap the profile then it shows a large profile of the upcoming 5 km / 3 miles.

However as a result of your comment I did some testing and have found a bug where it doesn't show that if you are using the grid layout (the default is the L shaped layout). Is that what you are using? I will fix that in the code.

The "Bend Detection" is not as good as proper turn by turn directions. It just looks for bends in the shape of the route rather than knowing about junctions. But so far most testers seem to think that it is better than no directions at all.

Do you have a date?
I put out a release candidate of the beta a couple of days ago with the intention of releasing that to the App Store next week if there were no problems. However testers reported several issues with it (for which I am grateful because it is better than releasing with them). There was nothing major but enough minor bugs to prevent me from releasing it to the App Store.

I have now fixed those issues and plan to release another candidate later today or early tomorrow. I want the release candidate to be tested for a week and I don't want to release before a weekend so my best guess now is early the following week. But again that depends on how testing goes.

In the meantime I have added a few pages to the website which give an idea of what will be included. I haven't updated the rest of the website, so they do not integrate well with that yet:

Is any of the beta users trying out https://bikerouter.de/?lng=en for route creation?

It is a free tool made by sport enthusiasts and I noticed they nowadays explicitly state on their route export screen that the routes in GPX and TCX format include turn-by-turn instructions.

Can this app be shared with family or does each family member need to purchase their own copy? I want my wife and I to use the same app when we are hiking.

The app supports Family Sharing, so you should only need to pay once if your Apple IDs are in the same family.

As an aside, the app does not support Family Setup, where multiple family members have separate watches that are connected to the same iPhone. This does not affect your situation but I thought I would mention it because people sometimes confuse them.

I am using beta version and trying to import a gpx file for route navigation and I get this message that there are not any waypoints and to use bends. But the file contains many waypoints?
