I am using beta version and trying to import a gpx file for route navigation and I get this message that there are not any waypoints and to use bends. But the file contains many waypoints?

I used a different GPX online tool and now it seems to have used the waypoints. Upon closer examination under Nav tab on iPhone it doesn't look right. Sending files.

Thanks. Those files just contain waypoints with a location and nothing else of use to determine if they are navigation waypoints. One file has names of the form "Untitledx' where x increases, but the other one doesn't even have that. No icon, name, description or anything that the app can use determine if they are a turn left or turn right etc.

They will be considered as 'Other' waypoints by the app so by default you will not get alerted when approaching or at them. However you could change this in the settings so it does alert you for Other waypoints as well as Navigation waypoints. You would at least know that the route is trying to tell you something even if you don't know what it is.

Ok - looking for an online route creator for prior hikes. Any recommendations? I tried 2 and neither are creating navigation waypoints. Thanks.

I'd also be interested if anyone knows of anything that can generate turns for an existing route, rather than creating them as part of creating a route.

I couldn't find anywhere that did this, which is why I added the bend detection feature.

https://ridewithgps.com allows you to upload a route without a cue sheet or a file from another website, you can use the Trace Tool to re-create it with turn by turn directions.

Thanks. That's good to hear because the app supports navigation waypoints created by RideWithGPS. In fact it was the system I used most often whilst testing.

However as a result of your comment I did some testing and have found a bug where it doesn't show that if you are using the grid layout (the default is the L shaped layout). Is that what you are using? I will fix that in the code.

I'm using layout with two segments at the bottom for RouteElevationProfile.
No action when taped.

I thought I had fixed that, and it seems ok when I try it now. Are you using the latest version of the watch app (v.6.0.13)?

To check go to the watch app Settings and tap More and then scroll to the bottom. Don't check the version of the iPhone app as they can occasionally be out of sync.

Bikerouter.de is excellent and very flexible. It is focused on cycling, but it also has a "hiking" profile in the menu in the top left, which I use occasionally. I have not had the time to check the navigation waypoints though, maybe later this month.

The tap to show the elevation profile worked great for me over the weekend. One minor request, is it possible to show current position on the larger tapped elevation profile for the overall activity?

Also I didn't notice but does it show current position on the actual climb screen when that kicks in?

Do you mean draw the white line on the far right, because for the non-route elevation profile the current location is always there?

I was on the map screen with the elevation profile on the bottom, then when I tapped that I got a single screen with the larger display not showing my current position? I meant to take a screenshot, will try and do a local walk and reproduce if I can!

I tried and it doesn't seem to add Nav waypoints. Could be user error though

Another good experience on the beta (think version 6.0(13) although got the later version now)...

Grabbed route from a previous run of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks, to walk up Pen-Y-Ghent yesterday...when turned round and started coming back, got the "warning...wrong way" (or whatever it says!) message, long pressed in and reversed the route and everything picked up nicely with, automatic directions nicely reversed 👏

One question I have is about maps on watch. I clicked on "Send Map" as it was outside my normal local area, but afterwards I noticed there didn't seem to be any other 'dark' areas on the Maps...do the maps get cleared after every update or something, or does the app just lose track and they're actual still on the watch anyway??

(downloaded local anyway - will keep an eye out through future updates).

Glad the navigation went well. That sounds like quite an extreme use case but at the same time quite common, so it's good to hear that it worked well.

The grey areas on the downloaded maps have been a bit unreliable for the last year or so. Sorry about that. My suspicion is that it is because of a bug that appeared in watchOS 10.5 / iOS 17.5 where the iPhone app does not get informed when files are received by the watch app. I have had to work around that bug in a few places and keep hoping that Apple will fix it one day.

My plan is that I will wait until iOS 26 is released in the hope that will fix it, and if not then I will workaround it where necessary. I am not optimistic because several of us developers told them of the problem well over a year ago and nothing has happened since, but you never know.

Not as extreme as it seems, was only 10k round trip and didn't really NEED navigation, park up, follow some signs to the top of the mountain, come back down again!! Just a "test"/"play" more than anything.

I guess my question is, on the downloaded maps, do they actually remain existing on the Watch even if the phone app doesn't know? (although its not a big deal to re push them every now and then).

The maps on the watch are never deleted unless you specifically delete them all. This includes the maps that are downloaded on demand during a workout as well as the ones that you specifically send to the watch.

They don't take up much space so the app just keeps them there. In the future I may provide the option to delete the maps for a specific region but that isn't possible at the moment.

Been using the beta and it's been working really well. Love the ability to be able to see the elevation profile and the turn notifications are working really well.

I do have one question, when I finish a workout and I go to view it in the Apple Fitness app, I don't see a section for splits.
Also, when I dive into the heart rate section, it also is not showing like a activity from the native workouts app with the heart rate zones and time in each.
Is this my user error or by design?

Unfortunately Apple's Fitness apps don't show splits or zones for workouts created with third party apps (or at least I have not worked out how to make them show splits or zones).

However you can see them in much more detail in the WorkOutDoors iPhone app. For example, display a workout in the app and then change Map to Laps. Then tap the Heart tab and change BPM to Zones.

The bend route feature works great! I think I was overly concerned about not having enough waypoints.

A couple of questions:
1. I received the next route direction about 100 ft away but when I get to a route change how can I see the route direction notification again?
2. When I tap on elevation graph on the bottom it will use the entire screen but it only shows for about 1-2 seconds. Is there a way to keep the larger graph on the screen or have it as another screen to swipe to?

Navigation has been working great using watchOS 26. However, I have experienced abnormalities with routes with repeat loops/laps. In the screen capture below, there is a two-lap loop. At the circle, after the 2nd lap, navigation reset to the first lap, prompting for a left turn instead of a right turn. Is there a modification needed for routes with repeat laps/loops? Also, is it possible to run a route with a target or interval workout simultaneously?

An observation, not related to the WOD beta or navigation. I am a Stryd Nextgen footpod user and noticed after one of the previous WOD updates or perhaps a prior Stryd update that many of the secondary Stryd metrics do not report correctly (e.g., wind power, GCT, vertical oscillation, etc.). For indoor runs on the treadmill, I have been using another watchOS/iOS app called Runcline by Pascal Caieres. Runcline connects with Stryd and does not have issues collecting the secondary Stryd metrics. I mention this as a possible resource that might be able to provide guidance on connecting to the Stryd footpod.

Glad the bend detection works well. You should get a turn notification at the waypoint as well as before it. If you aren't getting that then please check that you haven't disabled it in the settings.

You can either increase the amount of time that messages are displayed (in Settings / More Settings) or you could configure a screen with the "Route Elevation Profile" and "Upcoming Route Profile" metrics. If you use the third of the four layout options and with the largest text size then it shows a large metric above a smaller metric.
