Wake up. This isn't 1994. The World Cup is HUGE in the United States. Soccer is huge in the United States.

8 Million homes watched USA-Ghana.

8. Million. That's not a minor spike.

Also, the 2014 MLS average attendance was over 18,000. In case you were wondering, both the NBA and the NHL are below 17,500.

Wake up. Look on the internets before you pretend soccer isn't a big deal here.

That's ignoring the fact that NBA/NHL have televised broadcasts of their games. Rights to broadcasts these games are in the billions of dollars. You may have 18,000 people watching a MLS game. But that's it. No one is watching a televised broadcast of it. No one is watching highlights of a MLS game on ESPN. Hell, I live in city with a MLS team and I don't even see highlights of those games on local sports highlights. Sorry, soccer is nothing between world cups.

I think the truth lies someplace in the middle. SB Nation has an interesting break down of ratings data from Nielsen, MLS continues to struggle on TV, but there's reason for hope.

The average Major League Soccer fan is a little younger, less likely to be white and makes a slightly better salary than the average fans of other major North American sports leagues. MLS fans are also a bit more tech savvy and likely to share their thoughts on social media than their fellow sports fans.

These are some of the big takeaways from Nielen's annual sports media report (full report: year in sports). Most of it suggests that MLS is well positioned to see some significant growth in the future. But what it also highlights is that MLS is not doing as good of a job as it probably could in capturing the hearts and minds of North American soccer fans.

That said, if MLS can maintain a stronghold on these demographics it suggests that they are well positioned to see a dramatic improvement as their core fans age. It's no wonder, then, why ESPN and Fox are reportedly trying to lock the league into an eight-year broadcast agreement. As I've said before, though, such a deal would limit the league's ability to capitalize on this potential. Hopefully MLS can resist the urge for a quick payday and have faith that better and richer days are ahead.

International matches (and big name European clubs) tend to do well on TV but MLS games get horrible ratings.

18000 seats per match. You are showing you ignorance. Especially when you consider youth soccer in America is insanely popular.

compared to Baseball, Basketball, American Football in Europe the MLS is still really, really strong

edit: just to put some perspective out there
Germany vs. Portugal ? ~26,5 million viewers, with a 81% rating, just in Germany (in Austria it were around 1,2 million additional viewers)

the worst game of the world cup so far, Iran vs Nigeria, was watched by 9 million viewers in Germany alone.

MLS is still behind NASCAR, golf, and tennis. 18,000 seats are irrelevant (as previously explained and thusly ignored).

I really do hope the US wins against Portugal too! I want us to advance to the next rounds against all the odds. Germany will hopefully slaughter Ghana today!

Soccer is huge every 4 years, then it goes away. There will be some interest in 2015 as the US Women's team is more popular than the Men's, but let me know how soccer ratings are in 2016-17.

Also, the average MLS stadium capacity is 21,083, while the average NHL rink capacity is 18,343, using capacity figures on Wikipedia (and using the 'artificially reduced capacity' for some MLS stadiums). Sounds like the NHL is around 95% (17500/18343) capacity to MLS' 85% (18,000/21,083).

A market like Edmonton with just shy of 17,000 seats could easily sell 20,000. Toronto with just under 19,000 could easily sell 25,000 in that feral market. I'm sure the same could be said for marquee MLS markets like Seattle, but just promoting numbers based on size doesn't quite paint an accurate picture. The NHL has 2/30 rinks over 20k capacity, while MLS has 13/19. The third smallest MLS stadium would be #16 for an NHL rink.

When Argentina scored I was like finally! Didn't want it to end with a 0:0 score.

Thanks. So instead of being a smart aleck about US soccer's growing popularity, why don't you go somewhere else? I hear someone in China found another piece of glass that may be a part of the new iPhone.

Better yet, why don't you start a thread about the fixed nature of the NBA, the detrimental effects of high school football on mental health, or the steroid era?

Only in America. For the rest of the world their is huge interest all year round. Football is the worlds most popular sport by far.

What's wrong about a 0:0?

Would have fit the game perfectly.

Goals always make for a better game. If nothing else it gives the pundits something to talk about.

Don't get mad at me that soccer isn't popular in the US. I'm just the messenger

What Apple fanboy said and because both teams had lots of chances to score but missed so it would be a shame if no one scored.

That was the entire point of my post - it was purely U.S. centric based on U.S. viewership. I don't think anyone is so oblivious in this day and age to know it's not the most popular sport worldwide.

So, what do you think about the US today? I think they had a shot before, but I like our chances even more now, with Portugal missing two key pieces, and a wounded Ronaldo.

In typical USMNT fashion, they'll fall flat on their faces with a draw or loss.

If they actually turned a corner as a team, they could win a nice 2-1 or 3-2 game.

I believe we're going to win. It's going to be hard (which everyone knew already), and it's probably going to be a low scoring game, but I believe we're going to win.

World Cup 2014 Brazil

Belgium vs. Russia - the most boring of all the games I've watched so far.

----------

It's a shame I won't be watching the USA vs. Portugal game. It's starts at 3AM here :(

Again Belgium just edge a win, but so far they are a disappointment, I really thought they were going to set this tournament alight.:(
