Funny that you say that as a sports reporter commented on the U.S.' increased interest in soccer, yet a decrease in the interest in baseball.

Whoever said that is dumb. There's a mild spike in interest every 4 years. And it plummets soon after.

You don't get it. It's already there and it's not going away. Older people may complain, but they will die off eventually.

As the world becomes increasingly globalised, it just won't be possible for the US to resist soccer. It's the world game: it's too big and too popular and the US allows too much immigration to keep it out. Things change over time. Who would have thought 50 years ago that the NBA and NFL would be as popular as they are today.

Americans have bought more tickets to world cup games than any other nationality other than Brazil, who are hosting it. The sheer volume of US fans singing your national anthem is not a "mild spike".

Not true.

And the mean memes and tweets are all over the Web :)

This one cracks me up every time :D

Zzzzzzz this match signifies the reason why soccer will never catch on in the US.

So despite all the good matches that have happened at the World Cup (including USA vs Ghana), this completely irrelevant match between Japan and Greece will turn the US away from the soccer.

Was already clear from Agathon's post. Bolding is mine.

Brazil has not hosted all (past) World Cup games.

I am fully aware that Brazil has not hosted all WC games. "Americans have bought more tickets to world cup games". When I read this line it felt like he was referring to the WC games in general. Not just the one going on now.

Yet, the rest of the line made it clear that they were only talking about World Cup Brazil 2014 as the current data point of trends in US interest in soccer.

Context is important. Please try to provide some in your posts rather than making short, absolute posts like "This.", "Nope.", "Not true", etc....

As to that topic, I can say that in my town youth soccer for both boys and girls is the single largest youth sports organization. Some of these kids are quite committed to the sport.

Ok sheesh. Calm down. English isn't my mother tongue language. Football (soccer, as Americans call it) is a big thing in the US.

I think one of the improvements needed to increase soccer viewers in the US are the commentators. I try watching it on ESPN, but they are sooooo boring. I have to watch it on Univision because there is so much more emotion and detail from the commentators. I think this would be a huge improvement, because I love soccer, but its tough for even me to watch it in English.

Once every 4 years.

NBC's coverage of the Barclay's Premier League this past season was excellent. Almost all the matches were available to watch on one of their networks, the quality of the match commentary was generally excellent, and even the studio show was pretty decent. A huge improvement over Fox's limp efforts, and a huge boost in viewership.

The Champions League final adds more and more viewers in the US with each passing year, despite still being carried by Fox. I think that deal is over soon.

Kudos to Costa Rica. What a run of form they are on! Italy barely threatened to score at any point, and Ruiz took his chance perfectly. England out, Costa Rica in.

Balotelli missed the chance to score twice in the first half.

Pretty much. This is the only time I ever follow or even care about soccer.

Wake up. This isn't 1994. The World Cup is HUGE in the United States. Soccer is huge in the United States.

8 Million homes watched USA-Ghana.

8. Million. That's not a minor spike.

Also, the 2014 MLS average attendance was over 18,000. In case you were wondering, both the NBA and the NHL are below 17,500.

Wake up. Look on the internets before you pretend soccer isn't a big deal here.

Don't waste too much time convincing people soccer isn't huge in the US. For anyone to say that in the first place, I would question their ability to use the internet.

Forza azzurri! Tough loss today. Horrible formation and I can't believe Prandelli didn't bring out Immobile for this one. How can I get an avatar like yours?

How close is that 17,500 to average capacity at NBA/NHL venues, though?

Usually purpose built soccer venues are around 20,000 in the US. So comparable to NBA, NHL.

Once (if) the US ever produces a true superstar, we'll see what happens.

Yeah today was tough. Balotelli just disappeared after the break.

For the avatar, I just found a square image from google, downloaded it, and went to the insert avatar screen and uploaded it. The size was adjusted automatically.
