wow.
did not expect Spain to collapse like that.
i guess it goes to show how hard is to repeat on the WC stage.
Only happened twice IIRC (italy 34/38 and brazil 58/62).
The most elitist club in the world?

Winning four major consecutive tournaments would be crazy. Mentally exhausted? Too many old players getting their last show.

I like Chile but my heart wishes an epic comeback. 3:2 :D

The thing is, Spain does have the talent to have put up a serious threat to win this World Cup. The problem is Del Bosque was far too conservative in integrating new talent into the core of his team. He definitely stuck with Xavi and Casillas one tournament cycle too far. Guys like Mata and Koke starting on the bench, and guys like Isco not even in the squad?

Being placed in such a tough, tough group doesn't help. I feel bad for the Aussies who played two excellent games, way above expectations, and didn't come away with a single point.

still possible, but very hard.
I haven't been watching most this game as i have to finish some stuff at work, just following the updates, but you get only a partial sense of the game.
i'l try to actually watch the end of match on the espn streaming site to see if they can mount a comeback.

----------

watching now, if anything it looks to me it is chile getting closer to score again.

Agree. The next goal is much more likely to be Chile.

Busquets and / or Costa HAD to score at the beginning of 2nd half. They did not, Game Over.

chile in total control the last 20'. spain didn't have the urgency and determination. they had a couple of occasion, but so did their opponents.
it also seems to me they went away from their usual and productive ball-possession game

Pele said weeks ago to watch Chile. I guess we should have paid attention.

They have to be the most fit team in the competition.

Del Bosque wasn't helped by the fact that practically every triple champion kept on playing.

It can't be easy, having just crushed Italy 4–0, but three or four of the big names really should have retired from international football after the last European Championship.

Will be interesting to see who plays against Australia. I'm hoping that Cesc and Santi will give Wenger a taste of what could have been...

it seems all WC champions tend to stick a bit too much to the previous squad, even when younger talent is available.
italy did the same in south africa, and france in korea/japan. it is understandable, but probably one of the reasons repeats are so rare.

in spain-australia, i think the aussies might have an edge. they'll want to end the tourney on a high, while spain might just be depressed. if spain lose that game, they could end the WC ranked dead last, given their GD (-6)

i am more interested in the chile-holland game. on the one hand , they'll want to rest their guys. on the other hand, the loser plays brazil right away. of course this is assuming brazil wins their group, but they'll know it by the time they play

Yes, but even the Champion's League hasn't been defended by now by any team - and that comes yearly. There is some tough competition. anyone noticed the lack of slapstick goalie actions? I think four years ago that was still a thing (Casillas aside :D). Almost every team gets better and more professional in every way and it shows. Although that will take some serious time to really make an impact on who will win the title.

I never liked how he got treated afterwards (although I'm pretty sure he's an ******** :D) but I do not want to know what would have happened if an ageing Ballack hasn't been injured and left home pre WC 2010.

Speaking about slapstick goalies, the Cameroon one came near against Perisic.

hahahahahahaha Spain.

hahahahahahahahahah.

I think Germany will win this. Really hoping Belgium get their **** together. Such a good squad.

hup holland!!! ;)

Unfortunately they have a habit of disappointing in the end. They have been the best team in the competition so many times but cannot take it all the way.
Hope its different this time.

Will England advance to the round of 16?

Or will they be on the flight home with Spain.

It is probably more than just the one thing. Spain was really exposed in the Confederation cup. It showed that they did not play well when they were hustled off the ball and not allowed the room to play their passing game. This was not just in the Final but also in the Semi-Final they struggled to deal with close play.

Spain deserved the elimination (this is coming from someone who has been rooting for Spain ever since I knew the game of football, by the way). They were completely disappointing. They get eliminated by Chile? I'm utterly flabbergasted. And Casillas, what the heck??!!!

***************

Costa should've opted for Brazil instead of Spain.

It was a mistake from the get go to have Diego Costa in Spain. He looked so out of place. I bet he didn't expect this kind of debut. To be honest and this may sound harsh, but, I don't feel bad for him. He made it clear that he didn't want to play with Brazil. Big mistake because he would've been one of the top players in the team.
