Took a picture of a little spider with my iPhone 17 Pro Max

I upgraded from the iPhone 15 Pro. Although it is only two years, the upgrade is noticeable. I was particularly sold on the improved camera features. Here is a photo I managed to capture of a red squirrel today using the 8x zoom.

Although it is a crop of the 4x, I am seriously impressed by the clarity (e.g. when text is involved). It still allows some scope for manual cropping (e.g. for use on the lock screen).

Tyler Stalman's review confirmed what I already suspected: the 2x crop pipeline (used for the 2x and 8x modes on the Pro) are brand new for the 17 Pro series and are only activated when using those two 2x/8x modes specifically -- older Pro phones use a previous version of this pipeline. I think it looks great!

I suspected this was the case because I felt 2x looked better this year than on the 16 Pro Max despite the same sensor. Apple's tech specs don't indicate this at all but Stalman confirmed this with Apple.

Edit…this is a screenshot of my photo as the website won’t let me upload the original photo because ‘it’s too big’!

next time just go to upload the photo and just before choosing the photo tap on the three dots lower left and choose options and then select large instead of full image. no need to take screenshots or use a 3rd party app.
