No, I don't think so. A great majority of Mac users are still on PPC, and there's no way they would alienate them so quickly. But I do think it's possible that Leopard will be the last PPC Mac OS, with the new 2 years+ release schedule, putting 10.6 in late 2008/early 2009.

Additional Software to Complement Leopard?

We have been talking so much about Hardware lately. I'm very curious to see what new features Leopard go to offer. Can't wait.

I agree that things have been very hardware oriented lately, and consumer-based hardware at that. I'm not speaking in terms of what Apple has announced, rather a particular mindset that has become more pervasive from what I've seen among Apple's consumers. For me, the introduction of Aperture last year was something of a surprise after always reading about the iPod or the iTMS, almost like I had forgotten that they produce such quality software.

I wonder if one of the reasons its so late this year so MS wont be able to steal any features of Leopard.

PS: if anyone wants to digg the story feel free to

Quite possibly....

I'd much rather them fix things that need fixing before concentrating on new features.

If there isn't a MAJOR overhaul of the Finder announced then I will not be a happy bunny, not matter what else they announce.

i wonder that to.... cause my G4 powerbook is so outdated and i need a new one ;)

i wonder if they release a expose 2, where users can move around windows or a dashboard 2 with more custom-ability. (is that a word)

Must have to do with the new Intel Chips that will come out then. I agree with most people here that there will be an intel PowerMac (still wondering how apple baptizes this thing). The MacBook Pro might also be available in all sizes then with Merom inside. Changing processor type twice a year (G4 -> Core Duo -> Merom) seems a little jumpy, but that would be just Steve as we know him.

Does anyone know if Merom is Pin compatible with Yonah? Maybe that's the reason the CPU isn't soldered on in the MBP allowing an easy transition of those laptops. I'd love buying a 12" MBP in April and uprgrade the Processor in the same manner as adding RAM (unscrew a little cover, pull out crappy slow Core Duo, punch in screaming fast economic Merom, screw on the cover again). Oh how nice that would be...

As it's WWDC, we will certainly have some apps showing up too. Maybe Adobe will be ready for universal binaries then. Same goes for a demo of Leopard, the final version being available later.

Maybe there will be some "fun new porducts" too. :) I see a leather bags in girlish colors for the iPod Hifi for 299$ :D

Doubt it. Just last week MS shipped their first so called 'feature complete' Vista CTP. At this point they only have time to drop features if they are gonna ship during the promised 'Fall/Winter '06'.

Apple will announce that Leopard will be available in a true 64-bit version, but only for Intel processors. For PPC systems 64-bit will remain as it is - no graphics, no cocoa, no....

customize-ability maybe...

i cannot wait for news of what the new "macpro" or whatever
it will be called... im in need of a new system deperately since
im currently on a quicksilver 933 and a tibook 1ghz... i looked
at the core duo imacs, but those just arent the computers for
me... i want the power, i want it to last hopefully even longer
than my trust powermac/powerbook...

Maybe the PowerBook G5 will finally be released!

But seriusly. Every summer apple does a "back to school" sale where you can buy a mac and get a significant rebate for an iPod. Since i will be in the market for both a iPod and Desktop it seems perfect timing. My question is do they usually include the pro line of desktops in that promo? (MacPro + ipod)

Leopard should be pretty well along by August and I believe that the developers will be pleased with what they see.

In addition to the PowerMac upgrade I wouldn't be surprised to see a Mac tower. A single Duo (where the PowerMac has dual Duos) and limited expansion. The Mac mini is disadvantaged by its size - especially in terms of the HD and GPU - when compared to an iMac. A "Mac" tower would address those issues.

I believe that there will be other MBPs (and the base MB) on the market by WWDC so those aren't on my list of WWDC announcements. A new range of displays with iSight might make the list, but I think the "one more thing" will be something very different.

Issues outside of the Keynote (discussions on the floor) will center on how close the majors (Adobe, MS, etc.) are in getting Universal and who will be the first to allow you to run Windows full speed on a Mac.

Here, Here ....... Some Pathfinder features would be welcome indeed.

Thx. I new i read something about that, but I was just too lazy looking it up. So Yonah and Merom ARE pin compatible. This said, it could happen apple releases the rest of the MBP line in April and update later with Merom and 10 GB larger HDDs*. This could even be a silent update :D

* I use HDD for HardDriveDisk and HD for HighDefinition.

Redesign?

Does anyone else foresee a redesign of the PowerMac enclosure? Perhaps I am too demanding (an amelioration of something my wife calls me), but one thing that has always turned me off in looking at the PowerMac is the immense size of the case.

I realize the design follows from the interior functions, and Apple certainly did well to create a case that has worked for them, but I, for one, would look more closely at a PowerMac if the form factor would conform more gracefully with other furniture. An added motivation for Apple would be to disassociate their high-level machine from a look generally evocative of the G5.

This is perfect. My PB 17" 1.33 will be 3 years old in November and AppleCare runs out then. If things go my way I'll be into a new 17" MacBook Pro with Leopard and fully optimized software (Adobe this means you) by MWSF 2007. Yee haw.

Perhaps

It is possible that, due to the drastic switch, 10.6 will incorporate
functionality with the Power PC chip for one last round.
After all, Systems 7 - 9 ran on both chips (PPC and 68040 chips)
Apple will not likely leave PPC machines out in the cold, at least
through 10.6 ......

actually, i was pretty sure that the processor is soldered on - on the mac mini and imac it is socketed.

well this is interesting... i suppose by moving it to august apple can build up hype for one those "one more things..." cliches that already they are known for.

This could screw up the timings of other events, like Paris, but it looks to be better in August than June. At this point Apple will be able to announce Conroe based towers, give a progress report on universal binaries of pro apps, give a true preview of Leopard, (after all, it's developers that need to see this first), and still leave room for either one or two consumer products for the holidays or leave them to a special event some time after WWDC.

Great timing and certainly gives us another date to pencil into our diaries/add to out PDAs.

Let the rumors fly. :)

I agree, considering that Apple will continue to sell G4 and G5 systems for some time, PowerPC will still have to be supported at least through 10.6, to avoid alienating too much of Apple's customer base. And although it was a somewhat different situation, Apple supported OS 9 in OS X 10.0 to 10.4, and it supported antiquated pre-USB systems up until OS X 10.2.
