I sincerely hope Apple have done more than just sort out the Finder.
( The current finder is crap, but the next OSX needs lots more new stuff besides )
OSX needs lots of new functionality, and Candy Eye!

That is a really paranoid question. There won't be any split between Universals. You don't piss of millions of PowerPC users who have deployed systems and go, "Get a new intel one and shut up already!"

this is just not true... the computer industry seems to be running itself on the power of leaving people in the dust. apples done it pleanty of times, microsoft and first up in my mind is the evil that is DIGIDESIGN.

you subscribe to technology, you don't buy it.

EDIT: it's understandable to some degree.... obviously.. but many times it seems to be just business as usual.

August???? Isn't that later than normal??? :(

Yep - the latest it's ever been, I believe. I remember WWDCs of the past and the past 3 have been in May, late June and early June. It's almost as if Apple is delaying it on purpose to coordinate it with the release of a new Intel-based product or something... weird, huh? :p

Does anyone know...

.....if you have to be developer to attend WWDC? Can students attend? Are the price of admission that much if you can attend as a student?

Thanks

So this is how Apple will deal with Intel being in the driver's seat - shuffling dates so that Apple events "just happen" to coincide with Intel events.

LOL...

Yes, rather amusing, isn't it? ;) :D

It's not open to the general public - you have to be an ADC member to get in. It's a heavily Pro-centred event and as such doesn't draw as much interest from the general consumer.

don't know which planet you are coming from :)
i think the PowerMac looks very nice no matter where you put it.
but a redesign case would be nice.
perhaps with a glassy look-through surface? :D

As we saw little or no change for the intel iMac, Mac Mini and PowerBook/MBP I very much doubt the intel transition will bring a new PowerMac case.

I very much doubt it.

There are far too many PPC macs out there. Does Apple want OSX 10.5 to flop? Because this is what will happen.

Maybe some SSE3 acceleration / features that will not work on PPC with AltiVec? Nah, don't think so.

The fact that 10.4 still runs on a G3 (with FireWire), makes me very confident that upcoming releases of Mac OS X 10.x will keep supporting PPC. Presumably PPC with AltiVec and Quartz Extreme will be required.
I can't imagine any G5 being left out in any of the features in Leopard.

Mind you, it will be the first universal binary release of the Retail Mac OS X 10.5.
I wonder how many maxxxxxxuussssss-cracked PC's out there will be running this.

well which ever way its pretty kol.. and can't wait to see if any new products get released.. and I mean Good New Products...

What does this do to the date of Mac Expo Paris....

Great question.

Maybe Apple moves the Paris Expo to early November for the pre-holiday season announcements...

I wonder if one of the reasons its so late this year so MS wont be able to steal any features of Leopard.

PS: if anyone wants to digg the story feel free to

I think this is spot on.

Leopard needs to be a major jump over 10.4 since Vista is basically a dead knock-off of OS X.

And Steve knows that MS has once again done a "good enough" job of their OS and given people enough to stay with Windows.

Apple's only move now is to change the game again.

I hope 10.5 is a massive upgrade and makes Vista look like a pathetic knock-off of an OS from 5 years ago.

Apple will announce that Leopard will be available in a true 64-bit version, but only for Intel processors. For PPC systems 64-bit will remain as it is - no graphics, no cocoa, no....

No, not a chance. Apple isn't going to screw over that much of their user base.

With that said, it would surprise me if the G3 chips can't run 10.5.

Vista is feature complete, a Leopard preview at WWDC will be to steal thunder away from Vista's RTM, if anything.

There are quite a few things we'll see from Apple before we see that one. :p

Well, I'll also accept "Mac mini with a better graphics chip" - I can always buy the screen separately... ;)

But I'd much prefer the all-in-one solution, with big hard drive built-in, etc. It's OK, though, I'm not really looking to buy any new computer tech before 2008! My iBook G4 1GHz and Mini-ITX 1GHz server are doing OK until then, I think! :p ...I'll be very angry and disappointed if there's no 23" iMac by then! >> grrr! <<

Well, if you'll be waiting until 2008 then you might have a shot. The 23" iMacs with 1 TB HDD, 2 GB RAM standard, Blu Ray optical drive and Kentsfield should be out by then. ;) :D

We never had that problem in the past years with IBM....

...because they never had anything new to announce! :D
