Just think what Apple could achieve if its Mac business was offloaded onto a separate company that actually cared about the product and updated the Mac Mini, the Mac Pro and the Macbook Air.

I have upgrade money burning a hole in my pocket but I won't be spending it on the Macbook Pro.

Just buy a fully specced 2015 15" rMPB. I did and it's amazing. Not one bit slower, because Skylake is energy focussed, bigger battery, better keyboard, useful ports, magsafe etc. etc. etc.

I'll argue that the retina MBP first announced/released in 2012 was probably the most awesome laptop at the time (if ever). It was a joy to use, the benefits were immediately noticeable, made me feel proud to own one. Apple's "best pipeline ever" was probably in 2013, when all Macs were up to date, iPhone 5S was making ripples, OS X and iOS were nicely polished, and the iPad remained an interesting device (without being ludicrously touted as a computer replacement). Since then, with the exception of the iPhone 6 sales blip, it's been a downward spiral in quality and execution, with Apple coasting on reputation and brand alone.

Just because the iPad can't replace YOUR computer doesn't mean it can't for anyone. I love gadgets and love the Mac but at the end of the day I don't do my career at my computer so yes, for me, an iPad has completely replaced any other computer as my primary device for 95% of my home use. Having a need that is different from yours isn't ludicrous. Posts like this remind me why it's a damn good thing Cook is in charge and not some tech enthusiasts on a forum. You grossly exaggerate the problems with Apple and completely ignore the many benefits of apples products, services, and support that keep customers buying more of their gadgets.

Tim Cook will say the Macbook Pro was the best selling notebook from Apple. We are very pleased.

They should be pleased since the previous best-selling notebook from Apple was the MacBook Air which has a much lower ASP (and profit margin).

In that case, that separate Mac company, would be run by just as big a bunch of fools as Apple is.

While it is de rigueur to blame Tim Cook, Steve Jobs also said he would "milk the Mac for all it was worth and then move on to the next thing". And considering how proud he was of the iPhone and the iPad, I imagine he felt those were "the next big thing", just as Tim appear to do.

So we might be in the same place if he had not passed on.

Make the following thought experiment: Assume, Apple had never introduced a Mac Mini. Would we complain about Apple as much as we do now (we still would complain about other things)?

Apply that experiment to any of their products and you'll still discover it's a pointless experiment.

This is shipment, right?
Considering most PC OEMs like to do channel stuffing, and most of their numbers come from enterprise contracts, their numbers, even if it shows an increase, is deceiving. Meanwhile, Apple is known to be extremely restrictive in their channel distributions, that a growth for Apple can actually be a real growth.

How can US market share be 14% one month then 10% a month later, then 12% a couple months after that?
I wouldn't bet any money on this graph being accurate.

Nail on the head. I think this is the biggest factor everyone always overlooks. A new Mac purchased within the last ~4 years will be replaced when wear-and-tear kill it, or when it's irreparably damaged. Not because the hardware is too obsolete for modern software to run well enough.

But when your MacPro dies in ~4 years and you walk in to the store to buy a new one, you don't expect to see the exact same model you just had. HP & Dell were able to upgrade their workstations twice in this time. If Apple was on their A game with their computer division, they would be killing it in gaining market share.

Macs? Beahahahahaa. Excuse me...ahem. The article meant combined macs including mbp.

I'm gonna be a part of the Dell chart soon, still preparing myself to the switch! :D

Please do enjoy the planned obsolescence, commonly conflicting software BIOS and driver update fiascos, coil whine, backlight bleed, near molten lava temperatures, ridiculously loud and constant fan noise, and near certainty of some hardware failure after initial warranty expires.

My Condolences - Dell has always made garbage computers and their new ones are no exception.

I was part of the Lenovo chart - bought a Yoga 710 after Christmas. Then HP came out with the new Spectre x360 and I returned the Lenovo and am waiting on that. Now that's how you do a computer - congrats HP.

I'm not after Ultra Portables, I was hoping to get a powerful up to date MacBook Pro 15, but I didn't like what Apple has just made.
new Dell XPS 15 is a very well made PC and with the last update, Kaby Lake, 32 DDR4, Nvidia 1050GTX and a great 4K screen is where I'm heading :)

Wait for the new XPS 15 Kaby Lake. Not out yet, but will be soon and it looks sweet. :)

Apparently you are the one that buys the $199 Dell models. You apparently haven't bought any Dell computers in the past few years, so you really shouldn't give an opinion about something you know nothing about. The last few years the Dell XPS line has been award winning. I have sold all my clients Dell portables and desktops for over 10 years (exclusively) and they have been very, very reliable.

My condolences to you for either making poor choices or having extremely bad luck.

It's out my friend, since yesterday Dell XPS 15 9560 is out and shipping is around last week of Jan / first week of Feb.

Thanks for your kind words :D
But I won't pay 4300$ for old hardware and a Touch Bar :)

You lost all credibility with "I have sold."

Your welcome, I'm here to help. By the way, who pays retail for their Mac's, seriously?

I pay retail, of course...
It's not the price only, multiple factors this update is not for me :)

I know it's gonna be hard, but I lived with Windows for a long time and I know how to manage it!

You're correct. But the users actually use Xeon processors to their fullest don't even register as a blip on the market-share graphs. I'm not saying it doesn't suck that Apple has completely neglected the Mac Pro, it's just that it's irrelevant to OPs point I was agreeing with.

But that display, have you seen it in person? And those speakers, have you heard them in person? Or, have you got a hard on for the other specs - processor (not even a true tick or tock) and DDR4 only? You realize you can buy the new MacBook, enjoy it for 3-6 months, sell it for 90% of what you paid and get the Kaby Lake for a pittance? They make this BootCamp thing too. The best Windows laptop is always a MacBook.

9 out of 10 "men in the street" that I know are just like you - use a "real" computer most of the time and a phone the rest. It's not quite at the point where I can just go all-iPhone for everything.

Do you live on geek street? haha - cos thats no the consensus on my Facebook or Twitter where I don't follow or have any tech based friends at all.

The screen is awesome, I saw it in real time and I like it.
the speakers are not that good, you are right...but I really don't use my MacBook to listen to music, BOSE headphones all the times!
I waited for a new MacBook since early 2015, I'm fed up with waiting, especially that I need to carry a bag of dongles with me now...
Boot camp is full of issues and of course DDR4 and Kaby Lake will make a different! :)

I'd buy the cables I needed long before I got a bag of dongles.

Apple grew less than the top makers of PCs...

Fair point.

But the other guys might have had an increase in $300 laptops or other bargain basement computers.

Those are products that Apple doesn't even bother with. So it's difficult to do unit-sales growth comparisons when the companies sell vastly different types of units.

If you really want to compare growth... let's get everyone on the same page.

But you can't do that... since Apple is unlike all the other PC makers.

Imagine what HP's growth would have looked like if they ONLY sold $1,000 laptops last quarter. That would be the only way you could accurately compare HP to Apple.

But instead... we get this broad chart covering the entire PC market... whereas Apple only competes in the high-end segment.

And are we forgetting that everyone else is selling Windows computers... while Apple sells MacOS computers?

If you think about it... Apple has had 100% of the MacOS market for quite a while! :)

Out of curiosity, what are you intending to do on the Dell that the MBP15 isn't good enough for?
Is it 3D rendering, lots of virtual machines required?

If you think about it, it is an amazing business model! Very clever and the reason why Apple are worth a fortune.

I could never be an analyst. I so over estimated the mac sales for the 4th quarter.

The only "logical" reasoning I can figure is someone at Apple realized they are going to sell 4.5 - 6 million macs per quarter whether they update them or not. People are still buying them so why not. Let the fervor build, intro new models, sell 6-8 million for the next 4-6 quarters, 5-7 million for the successive 4 quarters, and 4.5-6 million for the 3-4 quarters. Wash rinse repeat.

At the time I was being cynical but I figured 7 million with the introduction of the new MBP. Maybe the lack of a new mini, iMac, and Mac Pro affected the numbers. Yup, that it. I CAN be an analyst.:)

Good luck with your pc
Thanks :) some stuff will always needs a dongle for the time being.

Thanks but I know exactly of what I speak. I've been in this business far too long and despite your condescending nonsense I do know what I speak of. Thanks for playing, don't pass go, don't collect your $200.

Day in and day out, I use a "Business Class" Dell. For the past 6 years over 2 different Dell lines (Precision and Latitude) and they both have sucked and been quite unreliable. And before you scream "Corporate Image Issues", nope, dual boot from Windows and Linux hardware problems exist in both. The latest looks like it's been through a war with wearing paint, hinge that is loose, etc. That's not quality. Contrast that with my Macs which are used just as much and are older than that and have solid hinges and don't look that bad and are 100% functional.

Their servers are equal crap.

So yeah if you want a steaming pile of excrement buy a Dell. If you want a good computer, shop elsewhere. Dell has always been and always will be garbage.

something like this, and I really want a 4K screen.

The new HP Spectre x360 in 13" and 15" offer 4k. Lenovo Yoga 910 and 710 also offer 4k screens. All are excellent machines.
