I have nothing but good things to say about AT&T in my area. Perfect service everywhere. Never had a dropped call.

Same here. And their customer service has never failed me. 2 thumbs up for ATT/Cingular (been a customer for over 8 years). I have lived in several places in Texas along with the Denver Metro, and so far, so good!

So ATT is bad in DC i take it?

It is ok. The service dips in some smaller areas and it seems entering any places with roofs really limits the phone.

Out of my previous areas, it is the best which isn't saying much

As for some of your cities were you say people like it, I have friends who would disagree with you all in some of those cities

I have had AT&T (Cingular prior to that) for nearly 5 years now. In Kansas City it's better coverage than Verizon, way better than Sprint from my work phone exeriences and I travel all over the metro area for my job. I have to agree with others here... location, location, location.

I'm sure AT&T is horrible in some area's of the US just as they are great in others. Customer service I've had to deal with has been Sprint/Verizon for work, AT&T for personal stuff. I would probably put Verizon on top as taking care of something quickly and without hassle over AT&T next followed by Sprint being the worst.

Bottom line is the iPhone blows anything else away in the user experience factor. Comparing hardware spec's on a phone is retarded, if you don't have the software to make it easy and fun to use who really cares if it's 800mhz vs 600mhz or a crappy 8megapixel cam vs 3megapixel on the iPhone. I can list off at least 10 or 12 people that have purchased the iPhone within a few months after getting the chance to mess around with mine at a party or ask questions how i like it. Only wish I was making commissions for selling iPhones! lol

Apple has been the best customer service I've experienced in a long, long time. I've had an old ipod and macbook in for issues and can't think of how it could have gone better.

I am somewhat worried about AT&T as well. But, I am getting my iPhone no matter what as soon as my current contract with another carrier ends.

I'm on the Las Vegas strip and have full 3G service but drop calls and get weird blips and noises constantly on both my iPhone 3G and Blackberry Bold. Granted Sprint and Verizon have absolutely ZERO bars. I guess CDMA can't penetrate windows for some reason in 2009.

It's really weird for being smack dab in the middle of a major city. ATT is the best in that you have full service, but the huge amount of dropped and failed calls do get VERY annoying. Hopefully the iPhone 3GS will change that. I've been really happy with ATT customer service for the past 3 years though.

Bought the phone in Baton Rouge. Split time there and New Orleans.

Moved to Chicago for a few months with it and got the 3G

Am now in DC for work

I travel often :D

I will be using it in DC, NYC, and Chicago.
People I asked in DC and NYC repeated saying tons of dropped calls...

I'm going to be buying my first iPhone too, coming from Verizon.

I think we just hear lots of bad things about AT&T because, of course, people are more willing to complain about their service than praise it. In this thread is looks like there are a lot of people that like AT&T.

Yay! I live in Phoenix (near the new Scottsdale Quarter Apple Store). I'm glad to hear that there is good service. Can't wait to get the iPhone... I'll be getting a corporate discount too, so I'm happy.

No surprised the Apple store has an ATT tower nearby :)

I rarely have dropped calls in the city or in the suburbs. You won't get service in the Metro but that is a Metro issue by having exclusivity with Verizon.

The people that have problems are far more vocal. I've never had a problem with AT&T. Absolutely zero. The coverage were I live and where I have traveled has ranged from good to great for the most part.

I was getting 1-2 bars and some spotty data coverage at Crater Lake National Park this week. That place is in the middle of nowhere.

Very happy with AT&T

Great to know thanks!

I sometimes think its more an issue of GSM than AT&T. It seems in my experience that CDMA has a better signal stability and is able to penetrate obstacles more so than GSM.

I agree that the people with issues are definitely the more vocal ones, so I wanted to post to say that here in Central Coast area in California, AT&T is just fine. I've been with them since the Cingular days, and have never had much of a problem with them. Before that I have had HORRIBLE experience with Verizon (I don't get why so many people praise them, to me they are evil.) and Sprint just plain stinks, around here anyway. I hear good things about T-Mobile's customer service but I know their service (at least around here) stinks. So AT&T by fr is the winner in my opinion, at least if you're around here. Whenever I do have an issue, which is NOT often, I call and they take care of it.

Actually I really think Apple has been good for them, because from what I have noticed and experienced their customer service has gotten a lot better and "friendlier" since Apple came along.

Okay so - that all said - don't worry about AT&T. No cell provider is perfect (NONE OF THEM) but I actually think AT&T is the best of the bunch.

Where I live AT&T gets great service, except its only edge even though im surrounded by 4 major cities, MMS got delayed, tethering got delayed, theres rumors that push is delayed and im willing to bet AT&T and their precious, overloaded network is also behind that. Not that I would use the iPhone on another network, but losing exclusivity would force AT&T to step up their game.

Thanks so much. Guess I will find out. I have used Sprint forever, and in the last 3-4 years found the service fantastic once I figured out that the cell phone was the most important part. When i researched which phone had the strongest signal transmission and reception capabilities (LG and Sanyo for CDMA) I never had a single problem!

The iPhone definitely does not have the best reception qualities, actually I have never owned a phone that takes so long to "search" for a 4 bar signal. Your signal indicator on the iPhone is basically telling your what your signal strength was 5 minutes ago.

Really? I know that there is also an at&t store just north of the apple store (on scottsdale rd). I go to school near the apple store too, and for some reason everyone that has at&t gets horrible coverage inside the school.

EVERYONE keeps telling me the same thing, iphone is great and AT&T is beyond awful -- so bad that the iPhone barely trumps how bad the AT&T network is?

EVERYONE? Hardly. The really simple thing to do is look at the ATT Coverage maps for where you live, work and travel. I have an iPhone (personal) and a Blackberry on Verizon (work). Coverage is great with both carriers. I get 3G coverage at work and Edge at home, 5 bars both places.

I have zero problem with ATT. I always have 4-5 bars unless im in my basement. Customer service was very helpful fixing my 3G data plan yesterday.

ATT is HORRIBLE

AT&T is horrible. I am only still with them because of my iphone. Since 9am today, because of obviously, (at least that is what I am hoping because the oh so helpful humans can't say for sure) towers have data problems, my Iphone has read "Could not activate cellular data network: You are not subscribed to a cellualar data service" The only thing that I did differently today was upgrade to 3.0.

Anyone else having this problem? On wifi I am of course fine, but no 3G.

Oh, and btw the techs can't help. Gosh we love AT&T.!!!!!!

Actually, yes everyone. I have went up to many iPhone users in the last week. Specific number, 5. They all said same thing, AT&T coverage was just lousy, calls dropped all the time, but they LOVED their iphone and should still get one just understand AT&T is a walkie-talkie :)

I have no problems in D/FW, until I switch from a 3G tower to edge. Drops me every time, so I actually just tell people, it's gonna drop me, I'll call you back. I also have a dead spot on the interstate they have never fixed. The entire state of Colorado = horrible. Chicago so-so. I haven't had in problems in Lala land except for the drive to Malibu. For some reason, I had no reception in the Virgin Islands, even though my father had great signal. :D

5 people. Wow.

Stay with Sprint.

I'm in Los Angeles, and I would never come close to characterizing AT&T as "awful". I get a dropped call maybe once every couple of weeks, and that's driving all over the city. Dialing a number and not hearing it ring through happens more rarely.

Before AT&T, I was with TMobile, and before that, Sprint. AT&T's service is no worse around here than the other two. It's a non-issue for me.

Plus, it's a major asset to have access to thousands of AT&T hotspots for free...

Att has kind of surprised me over the last few days.....

I live in petaluma ca, (40 mins north of san fran)

Apparently my town has gotten a few more towers since I last used my friends 3g at my house,

I'm getting 2.3mbps and 5 bars at my house, which is nice and all, since I use my 18mbps uverse at home!

Although 3g seems to be way better off in my area than a few months ago...

I have only had one dropped call so far on my 3gs, and this is because I was on pier 39 in san fran, on an EXTREMELY busy day, I think the poor cell tower their was just over worked!

Instead of just whining, as others have mentioned, post where you live so others know where at least one person says the coverage is bad.
