AT&T is actually pretty ok... i know people with VZW and they get more no received calls/late text messages, it varies where you live.

AT&T is horrible. I am only still with them because of my iphone. Since 9am today, because of obviously, (at least that is what I am hoping because the oh so helpful humans can't say for sure) towers have data problems, my Iphone has read "Could not activate cellular data network: You are not subscribed to a cellualar data service" The only thing that I did differently today was upgrade to 3.0.

Anyone else having this problem? On wifi I am of course fine, but no 3G.

I had that problem back with 3b4. You've lost your WAP carrier profile. Restoring it will solve all your problems. Tech support should be able to hit you with an update as well to get your data back online.

As for me, AT&T has been just fine for me. I live in western PA and travel frequently into Ohio. My only gripe is I only have EDGE where I live where 3G is available to areas with less population in the state. Other than that, I've never had a problem in the 3 years I've had AT&T.

Att has kind of surprised me over the last few days.....

I live in petaluma ca, (40 mins north of san fran)

Apparently my town has gotten a few more towers since I last used my friends 3g at my house,

I'm getting 2.3mbps and 5 bars at my house, which is nice and all, since I use my 18mbps uverse at home!

Although 3g seems to be way better off in my area than a few months ago...

I have only had one dropped call so far on my 3gs, and this is because I was on pier 39 in san fran, on an EXTREMELY busy day, I think the poor cell tower their was just over worked!

I'm in Los Angeles, and I would never come close to characterizing AT&T as "awful". I get a dropped call maybe once every couple of weeks, and that's driving all over the city. Dialing a number and not hearing it ring through happens more rarely.

Before AT&T, I was with TMobile, and before that, Sprint. AT&T's service is no worse around here than the other two. It's a non-issue for me.

Plus, it's a major asset to have access to thousands of AT&T hotspots for free...

I have no problems in D/FW, until I switch from a 3G tower to edge. Drops me every time, so I actually just tell people, it's gonna drop me, I'll call you back. I also have a dead spot on the interstate they have never fixed. The entire state of Colorado = horrible. Chicago so-so. I haven't had in problems in Lala land except for the drive to Malibu. For some reason, I had no reception in the Virgin Islands, even though my father had great signal. :D

Thanks so much for the feedback. Makes me feel MUCH more comfortable.

It does make some sense when you switch from 3g to edge connection type you get dropped, albeit disappointing.

In Houston it does SUCK compared to Verizon but the phone is worth the crappy service here and there... like today in my bedroom I was dropping calls untill I moved close to a window.

I am a future iPhone 3gs owner. First iphone.

EVERYONE keeps telling me the same thing, iphone is great and AT&T is beyond awful -- so bad that the iPhone barely trumps how bad the AT&T network is?

Beginning to get worried I should have stuck with a better carrier for a lessor phone.

Please make me feel better that it's not THAAAT bad AT&T (or Suckular as we used to call Cingular).

AT&T is great, but that's because I live less than a mile from one of their towers :D They have good 3G speeds, sometimes you might get dropped calls, but it's very rare depending on where you live (ie if you live in New york or Miami there might be hundreds of thousands of people overwhelming the AT&T network).

I use the iPhone inspite of AT&T. Data wise I never have an issue service has always worked when I needed it to. Phone call wise it's rare I can make it through more than a 5-10 minute call without it dropping sometimes I can't even manage a minute call without multiple drops even while I have full signal. I never had issues like that with Verizon.

The 3Gs seems to be a little better on signal strength (not much) so far but haven't used it much so it's not really conclusive.

Where are you located?

It is pretty terrible

At least for me....and I have used it in several major cities

I love the iPhone and will continue using it but the AT&T service is by far terrible

Agreed. I had Verizon for over 10 years. I had AT&T in the 90's at some point since that was where we got the company discount. Always had dropped calls. They used to credit you back for dropped. Verizon was great and rarely had any dropped calls.

Well, I love my original iphone (rest in peace, I dropped it and it never recovered) and now have 3GS. If it wasn't for the fact that AT &T has the best smartphones and the Iphone, I would leave them in a milli second for Verizon. I even told an Apple rep that the iphone is GREAT, but weak link is AT&T.

i live within 20 miles of pittsburgh and i can tell you that if you live within 20 miles of pittsburgh in any direction you get pretty much perfect 3g signal. I haven't had any dropped calls in months because i think they fixed that problem with an iphone software update.

So i would guess that if you live within a 20 mile radius of a major city you should get pretty good coverage. If you live in the city it might be different though because of all the building and high numbers of people using the network.

Mms?

So I have one question... why is it that I don't have the option to send pictures over chat in my iphone? I was under the understanding that it was a new feature of 3.0... is it because of AT&T???

forbegos:confused:

Before upgrading to the 3G S, I used my iPhone (in just the past two months) in the following cities, in addition to a 3G USBconnect card for my MacBook Pro:

- Baltimore, MD and the DC area
- Houston TX
- Phoenix, AZ
- Chicago
- New Orleans
- Various parts of NJ

And have had no problems, no coverage issues, no dropped calls. In fact, the iPhone and AT&T pretty much saved my butt several times during my travels, in instances where flights got cancelled and the airline screwed up my travel plans.

Only issue I did encounter was that Chicago airport's 3G data is a bit slow, but I imagine it's because there's so many people there checking their phones and such. Away from the Airport it seemed just fine.

I signed up for AT&T before I got the iPhone or knew I planned to get an iPhone. And in reality, while the iPhone is an awesome phone, I don't think I would leave AT&T if they stopped making a version compatible with it.

The only real gripe I have with AT&T:

Yeah, it's an AT&T issue. They put in all this effort to lock out MMS on iPhone accounts that it's now taking them forever to re-enable it. It's supposed to be enabled for AT&T in late summer, probably late July.

i'm in new jersey and i haven't had a problem with AT&T.. I wasn't the biggest fan of AT&T as I was making the switch from Verizon, but the iphone made me switch. Since I switched, I haven't had a problem with my service.

The north bay appears to have gotten quite a 3G coverage increase in the past year or so. Last year, when the iPhone 3G was released, AT&T's 3G coverage was fairly limited -- IIRC mostly in Santa Rosa, with a smidge in Petaluma. Now, if you look at AT&T's coverage maps, coverage exists along 101 up to around Healdsburg, and extends west past Sebastopol and east past Sonoma:

I like at&t and I have great reception everywhere I work. I'm in the Chicagoland area I am happy.

THis is great info! I spend a lot of time in Chicago so good service there is great news!

Hope DC is better than I have found with other people ...

Cincinnati here -- three days, so far I've been full bars everywhere I've gone except at court, where I work.

The county courthouse is an old-school steel and stone behemoth, and my service drops down to 2-3 bars inside there -- which is still better than Sprint, where I struggled to even have enough service to call or connect to their EVDO network.

Well, I apologize if this is obvious, but you really need to ask the people around you, about the coverage around you. Here, if you just ask, "How is AT&T?", you'll get people saying, "Coverage is great!", and "Coverage sucks!". In general, it does seem that people complain about east coast coverage more than west coast coverage, though. I don't know about other parts of the country, but AT&T does seem to have significantly expanded the 3G coverage around the San Francisco bay area. I hope that similar situations exist for many other parts of the country, but I really don't know.
