okay so for starters, im going on my second week as an iphone user, this is now my 2nd iphone. ive been to the apple store over 6 times in the last week and a half trying to figure out what the hell is going on with my phone. ive tried everything so far, disabling push and notifications for everything, setting brightness to 15 % disabling cellular data (only way to take my phone off 3g without it disconnecting from all other networks through my provider) location services are off, every thing closed down in multitasking immediately after use, wifi is always off, 1 hotmail account thats set to retrieve data manually, Ive even had them replace the battery on the first phone, and even updated to 4.2.1 still no luck. went back 2 days later and got a new iphone, this one is great on standby , playing music on lock for hours, but nothing more.

So last night i compared with a guy at work both starting with 100%, now also remember my phone is days old, his is months old. Now my phone started off with no multitasking apps open, location off, wifi off, facetime disabled, push and notification off, no bluetooth, and i had my data enabled so i could go through forums and check facebook.

his phone has wifi enabled, bluetooth enabled, 3g, and data, all push and notifications on, 4 email accounts set on retrieve every hour, brightness at 80% , facetime on, autolock set to never, gps and google maps always on

within the first hour i had sent 10 text messages, played 15 mins of angry birds checked facebook once and was already at 77% battery

within the first 4 hours he had been texting listening to audio, watching youtube, watching videos on facebook, browsing facebook, among 15 other sites, showing me different apps he has and turning them on and off ,playing all 3d games , pretty much qualifying himself as extreme heavy user of the iphone and he had finally gotten to 82 % after constant heavy use

by that time i had made 2 calls 3 txt messages 5 mins of angry birds, and about 7 mins of robot unicorn attack, and i was at 55 %, that of which i locked my phone again and left it

after 6 1/2 hours of the same heavy usage on his phone he finally makes it to about 66% when mine is now at 54% from being locked for 2 hours

I dont know what to do... apple wont replace my phone again and they cant figure it out, on this new phone ive even done a full restore, and only loaded 2 apps, from a 100% charge with 2 texts and 15 mins of app usage im at 79% and its logging usage when im not using it and everythings closed fully

I know what your problem is and it is quite obvious: You and your co-worker are slacking off at work. Facebook, Angry Birds, and texting, while on the job? Unreal.

well for one he works for a different company , 2 its 24 hour on call swamping services, 3 i do whatever the hell i want , and 4 there is alot of standby time where i wait for a load to show up or for the dumbasses working at the warehouse to actually start receiving my product.

as for levmac , it gets frusterating charging my phone 4 times a day, and the battery only has on average 400 charge/discharge cycles before it only retains 80% on a full charge... id like to charge it as little as possible

Somethings up. I just restarted my phone with 72% battery life and it restarted with 74%?? Sh*ts crazy.

Update: Found some interesting possible solutions for the battery drain on Apple's support forums. Some say a hard reset does the trick, others blame notifications and push email, and others have had luck with starting clean and setting up their phone as a new phone in itunes. I'm gonna play around with mine to see if anything helps.

Update: According to Apple's support forums, resetting network settings under settings-general-reset network settings, which does get rid of all your wifi passwords is a possible solution. You could also try resetting your email accounts by deleting them, restarting the phone, and reinstalling them. Lastly, which seems to be working for me, I've turned my push on manual, and have turned off all my notifications. My phone was fully charged a few hours ago and is still going strong. I'd be interested in hearing others results if they try any of these possible solutions for the battery drain. The only thing is, I don't know if these work with jailbroken phones. Just putting that out there. I know I've been pretty ocd about this, but going from leaving the phone alone all night and still having a full charge in the morning to updating it and waking up to 89% is some what bothersome. Just trying to help so let me know if any of you guys try these. :)

Hey Reaperz, I understand your frustration, im pretty much the same with my iPhone 4, im onto my 2nd phone also and even though the standby time is a bit better, the percentage meter drops 1% almost every 3 minutes !

What I have decided to do is to switch off the percentage meter, im just gonna use my phone without having to worry about how much percentage it has dropped, as I know that when I get home im going to place it on charge anyway !

Totally agree, seeing the percentage makes me OCD about it. It was driving me crazy lol

But just for grins, I checked the usage at the 10% warning.*

6h 50m
17h 53m

Lots of phone calls and streaming pandora on wifi. Not too bad IMO.

I started a test only phone. I basically drained the battery completely and fully charged it and now I am going to see how the phone does. Thus far:

At 11pm last night it was at 100%

At 8am this morning it was at 90%

In the span of 9 hours this damn phone has lost 10% of power, which never happened before. The phone was just sitting there. No apps working and before someone asks me what settings I have I have the Sam exact settings as before when the phone was not losing as much.

A little bit more information. Since I posted, which was less than 3 minutes ago the phone has gone down to 86%.

Try turning off your notifications. This did the trick for me. I had a full charge at 11:11 last night and woke up this morning at 7 with still a full charge. Apparently, the last resort is restoring as new in itunes. :(

What if you have notifications on but you've never gotten one? Does that matter?

I'm not sure, but I'd turn it off to see if there's any improvement, then maybe turn notifications on but have one on at a time to see if there's a problem with one of the apps. There's some speculation on apple's forums that it may be an app which is used by a lot of Ip4 owners like facebook for example.

So far turning off the notifications helps quite a bit. I had a movie playing while I label envelopes at work and I'm at 88% which is an incredible difference from yesterday when I barely touched my phone yet had a 75% battery life around this time.

I'm not sure, but I'd try it with it off to see if there's any improvement, than maybe turn notifications on but have all but one on at a time to see if there's a problem with one of the apps. Interesting.

Let me give it a try.

It seems that the issue is happening to a lot

Exactly, that's the same post I was reading. I'm kind of surprised there hasn't been more talk about it on Macrumors. Seems to be a hit or miss kinda thing. Some reporting better battery and others reporting awful battery decrease.

Take a look at this

From 8:06am to 8:20am I simply just used my phone to get on facebook, check email, and go to macrumors.com

It went from 91% all the way to 87%

Yeah, that's pretty much how mine was. It was going down a percentage every 5 or 10 minutes. I could see it drop just from waking my phone up but not unlocking it. It seemed every time I touched it, it would drop. Turning off the notifications definitely helps, for me anyways, have you tried that yet?

Just noticed you have that location services arrow in the corner. I don't have that on.

Yes. I am also restoring it to see. I will also follow some steps that should be taken that were suggested by someone at the apple discussion forum.

Wow, really? I don't have this on mine. Maybe a fresh restore will help you cause something's not right if you're not running any apps but that still remains on the screen...

Okay, thanks for catching that. I may have found the culprit but who knows. I went under location services and saw that a football app was using location services for some reason. I turned it off. Hopefully this is the issue I have been having.

That's crazy. Keep us updated if you have any other problems or try anything else.

I definitely will. I am also going to do some tests on the new changes I have made and post results later on.

I surely hope that that app that was running in the background was the cause of my battery drain.

Anyone noticing their usage is creeping up without doing anything at all?

100% 2 days ago, barely used it tbh since so cold I decided to just leave it at home both days, used wi-fi in bed for at most 10-20 minutes each night, and had an alarms on, should be around an hour or more usage.

Check it today, seems to think I have 3 hours and 30 minutes usage, and is on 75%.

Feel annoyed I even updated now, was perfect before :(

Mike84 & RedburnIV,

Guys, im in the same position as you, there are times where I don't even touch my phone and it looses so much % in the battery ! I have turned push off for everything, location services off, bluetooth off, WiFi off and got brightness at full since I like the nice bright display

I have decided to just switch off the percentage meter, I believe there is definately something wrong with the way the percentage meter reports itself, its very misleading !

Since turning off the percentage meter, by using it all day today, it feels good to not look at how much percentage its lost, but still shows the battery symbol as being full :)

Something is seriously wrong with this version.

Just plugged it in at 65%.

25 mins later is is 94% and is now charging at a slower rate - the normal speed.

Yeah and it charges so quick from almost flat, there is definately something wrong, which is why I have switched off the percentage meter !
