Yeah I know its available here, but in Peru, the iphone costs like about $700 with no contract!!

Well, that's the price your friends has to pay up for his joke. Well, not fully, but let him know its a steep price - try looking on eBay for used 1st Gens, they can go cheap but try to buy from people with lots of positive feedback to diminish chances of being scammed.

Most likely you phone is gone. Ask your friend nicely to pay for a new or refurbished phone. It would be the right thing for him to do.

Normally, I would agree with you, but at 1 AM at a drunken New Years (presumably) high school or college party? I'm going to have to give that one to the New Years gods on that one. That sucks OP, glad the party treated you well overall.

Problem with water damage is that even if the unit eventually dries out and appears to work ... there can be progressive damage ... water causes oxidisation ... pool water will contain other chemicals too ... in my honest opinion your iphone is terminally damaged

if i were you i would just send you friend a bill for a brand new unit ... it was a prank gone wrong and he'll either have to claim on his insurance or pay the money

Look on the flipside.... you're now without your iphone, you're still paying a contact for however long you have left ... you're now out of pocket for no fault of your own ... its his problem ... shouldn't be yours.

You know, one time I took my $1300 jacket to the bar, then sent a bill to everyone who spilled drinks on it.

I'm sorry about your phone, and I know you were trying to avoid getting tossed in the pool, but lets be honest here.

If you're putting yourself in situations where you, or the stuff on your person is going to get harmed or wrecked then my opinion is that you decide beforehand if the situation you're entering into is worth that risk.

Everyone knows that when you go to a party or bar you take your ID, Cash, and your lady killer suaveness and that is it. You wear nice but old clothing, and you don't wear a hat. The reason for all of this is the same, you don't want people stealing or wrecking your stuff.

So...should your friend pay for this "prank"? In my opinion no. He should offer to pay for some of the replacement cost out of decency, but it is your responsibility to determine if a situation is potentially harmful and take all precautions necessary to protect yourself and your belongings.

I am amazed at how much an iPhone costs in South America. In Ecuador, the phone is $800.00! OUCH!!!

Hope your friend helps you with replacing your phone!

Thanks for the advices guys. Right now I am more interested in gettin my iphone to work. If that doesnt work, then I'll go talk to my friend, so we can get to an understanding.

So, rice right. Right now its in a plate full of rice. That didnt work for 3 days. So sealed or unsealed bag?? I got mixed commentarys on that. Anyone that had had succes with one of this methods?

Hairdryer or no hairdryer? Or maybe a fan?

Thanks for the props, I am not going to lose hope.

Sounds like a good night to me :p

Don't you have insurance on the phone? Just say it was "accidental water damage"...which it was, more or less

Its not really your friends fault either tbh, Im presuming you were both drunk (who isn't on new years), and you should of just went inside or something and put all of your belongings down as soon as you heard the word "pool". Of course its still partly your friends fault for throwing you in the pool, but I would of backed well away from the pool if I knew I had my iPhone in my pocket and that all of my friends are drunk....if he didnt throw you in someone would have...

If I was in your situation I would pay for half of a new iPhone and make my friend pay the other half...its not 100% his fault, it's not like you was all inside watching TV on the sofa then he picked you up and threw you in the pool for no reason

It's stories like these that remind me why I leave my 3G at home when I know I'm going to get drunk ;)

Sealed bag

I'd say to seal the bag. Squeeze all the air out first. That way, the rice will draw the moisture out of the remaining air in the bag. If you open the bag, then any moisture in the air will also get in the bag. The rice will not have much of an effect on a giant volume of air. Also, it would be an idea to put the rice into an oven at low heat for a couple of hours to drive out any moisture, let it cool, and then immediately put it into a plastic bag, and put the phone in, and seal it. That way, you have the driest rice you can get, a small volume of air, and the rice will act as a dessicant.

This is what I'm thinking from a common sense point of view....

If you have access to one, a food dehydrator worked for us. It was not an Iphone but it fell out of a chest pocket and into a cup of coffee. We turned on the dehydrator and put the phone in there for about 8 hours on low and the phone has worked perfect for months now. Might have been pure luck but it's working.

why would your friend pay for your phone because you made a stupid decision?

honestly i think that i would have had a thought process before i put my iphone in my pocket to go to this party

"hmmm...theres going to be a big tank of water there and im going to be drinking...do i want to bring a 300 dollar phone along? not to mention the fact that if it breaks im locked into a contract thats going to cost me over a grand over the course of the next two years...hmmm...."

at that point i would take my phone out of my pocket and put it back down on my desk.

you brought your phone to a pool party, think before you act, i wouldnt even bother asking a friend to pay for my phone.

these stories about high school parties are highly entertaining

It wasnt a high school party. It was more of a college / post college party.

It wasnt a pool party. Of course there was a pool, no one knew that things would get out of hand. I have been to a lot of parties were there's a big pool in the house, but no one gets thrown in it or something like that.

So to eedma, it wasnt a stupid decision to bring along my iphone. Maybe you are the kind of person that says, ok today I'm not taking my phone with me cause I may got robbed going to the store, or I am not taking my car out cause I may crash tonight. Dude you are missing a lot of things thinking that way.

The stupid decision was that in that moment, I didn't move away from the pool, I was very near the pool. Or I didn't took away my stuff like my other friend did. However that does'nt mean that the house owner throwing me in the pool just cause I was in the way, was a thing that had to happen. He should' ve thought ok this guy may have important things in his pockets so I'm not doing this.

I agree... you don't just throw someone in a pool. These days, people carry very expensive gadgets in their pockets and most of them aren't supposed to get wet. You weren't doing anything wrong by standing near a pool... you didn't expect to get thrown in against your will.
