I’ve gone through a lot of back and forth with phones this year, and I’m sure some of you saw my thread. When I got the 11 pro, I loved the size. The weight was a bit much, but the size of the phone was great. However, I just couldn’t justify the price. Face ID isn’t a huge selling point because I love touch ID. OLED has bothered me in the past, so I’m a bit nervous about having it.

However, I have SE2 that is going to my granddaughter by the end of the year. I had pretty much decided the 5.4 was likely gonna be a little small, so I was thinking I’d wind up just keeping the SE2 and then buying her one. I really do LOVE the SE2 for a lot of reasons.

That being said, ATT is offering the 11 pro for $300 off with an upgrade, so I would not have to get another line of service or anything, and that brings the price down to almost what the regular 12s would cost.

It DOES make it a bit more appealing to me, although I’m still torn because of how much I’m enjoying the SE.

Thoughts?

With the 12 line of iPhones coming out in the coming months, if you're enjoying your current phone, it might be good to just wait it out. When they're released, you would have the benefit of more choices and options, as well as seeing how the market adjusts in terms of pricing. There might well be better offers/incentives to entice people to upgrade to the latest and greatest, or to offload last year's models, etc.

Thanks.

Yeah I’m pretty much certain I’m not interested in any of the 12s. I definitely don’t care about 5G, feel like the 5.4 is gonna be a little TOO small, and not interested in going back to a 6.1.

I had been really torn about the pro, mainly because the size, to me, is just right. There are things I don’t love about it though. It’s a little heavy for sure compared to the SE2, and I am just not sure I wanna go back to face ID. I really do love the size though, and after being on the beach this past week, I realize I would probably like something that I could see in the sunlight. ;-p

I think the only time to buy a new phone is when you're sick of the one you've got or its damaged in some way. The 11 Pro might be a downgrade from the SE - depending on whether or not it's OLED screen bugs your eyes or if you're fine with the notch & no home button

That makes sense. In my situation, I am going to have to purchase another phone either way because the SE I have was promised to my granddaughter. I never intended to keep it past the 12 releases. The thing is, I don’t really want any of those, and there are things I DO like about the 11 pro.

The issue here is do I get an 11 pro for $300 off, or an SE2?

It's pretty clear you've done the research of overall pros and cons, and the "marginal utility decision tool" is ultimately exclusively yours. My suggestion would be to go to a store, and hold each in your hands. Write a note or two to get a feel for typing. How do your eyes deal with the text to read. It's also possible doing this will create a different motivator like really liking a certain iphone color.

The good news is there's really no wrong decision here.

Lol I have most definitely done the research this year. I had pretty much ruled out the pro for a couple reasons, but mainly because I didn’t think the extras it offered were worth $600 (To me). At $700, the price difference is half, although $300 is $300.

The biggest perk for me is that I absolutely LOVE the size of the pro, even if I don’t love the weight. I guess I need to decide if that’s worth it.

You don't know how great Face ID is until you try it. I think $700 for the 11 Pro is a great deal, and you're right. the 5,4'' is going to be an even smaller phone than the SE 2020.

I'm not sure how much the price is going to drop when the new 12's get released, so if you could hold off a little longer, maybe it's worth it.

11 Pro of course is better than the SE (if money allows it).

You have to remind yourself of the reasons you gave up the 11 Pro and use those to determine wether it’s worth it for you or not. $300 sounds enticing but if it doesn’t suit your needs or you won’t be happy with it I’d save the money.

I’ve been a bit like you recently, going from an 11 Pro to SE2 and now I have an 11. I’ll be giving the SE2 to my father in law. My decision came down to my usage, battery life etc. The SE2 form factor is excellent, no argument there and the 11 is so much bigger but for the better battery and some camera features I’m happy with it.

The 11 Pro was a great phone but didn’t work for me because of OLED screen. Given that the 12 lineup is said to be all OLED, if that’s something you can tolerate, I’d just wait it out.

I’m right there with you, the dimensions of the 11 Pro are fantastic. I love the lenses. The weight is a pain. I prefer to carry my SE on ordinary days. I have an S20 that’s a nice size and weight but it’s Android. I need iOS for my main phone at this point.

It’s honestly kind of scary to see you committing to a purchase without giving yourself a chance at seeing the final published specs (especially of the weight) of the 12’s. I personally avoid carrier deals after getting screwed over by AT&T on one years ago. Lol, I hold a grudge. But everyone does it differently.

Were you even able to use the 11Pro without a headache? I can’t remember.

At any rate the SE goes to the granddaughter. You will be free to evaluate your next iPhone. I would imagine even if Apple discontinued the 11, Pro as we’ve heard they probably will do, you would still be able to get them from a carrier or Best Buy for awhile after the announcements are made.

At worst you won’t be able to get an 11 Pro, but will be able to choose between the SE and a little 12 and a bigger 12 or even a 12 Pro.

Am I correct in recalling you can afford whatever you want but you’re trying to keep the cost down on principle? If so, after everything you’ve been through it’s best to prioritize satisfaction over frugality.

One thing to remember is that the iPhone 12 5.4 inch screen will be larger than your 4.7 inch SE2, just in a smaller physical package since the bezels are not there.

I understand the conundrum you face and wish you the best on your search for the device that fits your needs the best.:)

Not quite. Due to the AR difference, the 5.4" iPhone 12 display is going to be a lot taller but also slightly narrower. Typing in portrait, the width matters more and OP has previously mentioned the 4.7" SE2 is already narrower than she'd prefer.

I’d say go for it if you’re not too interested in the 12s. I know I was complaining about weight on the pro, but I switched to some grippier cases that I have and it is a game changer. I don’t feel the weight as much anymore as I‘m able to get a better grip on the phone.

That is true about being narrower. But, I still think overall you'll get more content on the 5.4 versus the 4.7.

Typing on a narrower screen could pose challenges for some. For me, it would not be a concern, but each person has their own likes and dislikes.

I wish they'd just make an iPhone the physical size of the 4.7 without the bezels. For me, that would be utopia :)

I thought you returned to 11 non pro from SE2?

my general recommendation is wait. iPhone event should be next week, and might be more sales even if you dont want the 12/12 pro

If you add a line won’t you lose your number?

From Tech Radar:

“Elsewhere, we've heard that the entire new iPhone range could be thinner than the iPhone 11 range. A specific thickness is only given for the iPhone 12 Pro Max though, which is apparently 7.4mm (down from 8.1mm on the iPhone 11 Pro Max).” Pro Max is 226 grams 7.97 oz

To give you an idea for comparison here are some stats from the Apple
store tech specs:

iphone 11 is listed at 8.3 mm thick. 194 grams or 8.84 oz

IPhone 11 Pro is 8.1 mm thick. 188 grams 6.63 oz

iPhone SE is 7.3 mm thick. 148 grams or 5.22 oz

The issue here is do I get an 11 pro for $300 off, or an SE2?

11 pro 256gb and be done, SE screen is too bland and small with iOS 14 widgets. I thought i would give one a go lasted 4 hours. It's a beefed up iPhone 6 same old screen/shape, TID is a pain with any moisture on fingers and FID way better with passwords etc, (no masks here). $300 off is good if buying new, they have been $250AUD off here.
I'd probably try ebay or gumtree here for a near new used. We get 2 year warranty here which helps.

edit, mind you there are no discounts/bonus here they start at $749 64gb SE.

I’ve had Face ID. I had an 11 before I got the SE, then I tried an 11 pro for a very short time, but returned it. I also have an iPP.

Well, I did like the 11 pro. I just couldn’t wrap my brain around spending a grand for a phone, and I do have some concerns about the OLED, although I’ve likely never used it long enough to know for sure if it’s an issue for me.

You’re probably correct about seeing the specs on the 12s, although honestly that 5.8 size is just SO dang appealing. The weight was definitely noticeable over the SE2, though it didn’t feel quite as heavy as the 11.

Yeah I can definitely get whatever - it’s definitely the principle of spending a grand on a phone. But $700 for a pro is getting down to the cost of an 11, which I happily paid last fall.

Goodness yes! That would be awesome! The narrower screen would be an issue for me because I already struggled to type on the SE2 until I did the zooming of the keyboard. It still isn’t great though, so I doubt I could go any smaller/narrower.

Well I won’t get a 256 - haven’t even come close to using 64 gb on any phone in recent years.

I like a lot about the SE2 - haven’t tried it with any widgets, so IDK about that. Touch ID can be an issue with moisture, yes, but Face ID isn’t always perfect either. That isn’t a selling point for me.

The selling point for me on the pro is size - period. Not even weight because I find it a little clunky, but the screen size and overall phone size is great.

Honestly, if I hadn’t promised my granddaughter the SE2, I wouldn’t even think about this at all. It’s just that I am going to buy SOMETHING in the next couple months, be it an 11 pro, one of the 12s, or another SE2. This offer popping up just got me thinking...
