1024x768 on a 7-8" screen will be fine. I’ll more than likely buy one, assuming the pricing is in line with my expectations.

Given that the benefit of the mini would be light weight and low entry price, it makes sense that it would have a lower resolution. If it were as thin as a iPod and got 9 hours battery life and was priced at less than $300, it would sell like crazy.

Since i already have an iPad, I wouldn't see a personal need for the iPad mini....

Sold my iPad 2 the other night, banking on an iPad Mini coming out this fall. That and i just got a Nexus 7 to mess around with until then. I don't see Apple putting out the Mini with the same res as an iPad 2. Plus with Retina being standard on the iPad and iPhone, and even migrating over to Macs, it would kind of be like working backwards to release a non-retina iPad, mini or not.

Some people are really confused about why Apple is bringing our the iPad mini.

It's NOT about giving the already devoted Apple user a smaller, more portable version of a powerful, technologically advanced (read: retina display) tablet product (read: iPad).

It's ALL about making a cheaper iPad for the masses. And that doesn't require a retina display.

That's it folks, you can dream about something else, but this is what's going down.

That's why you use /S or /Sarcasm.

But it also had a serious element of truth... Something that would have been compromised by /S or .

Reading on bright backlit displays is unnatural.
Strenuous.
Kindle before the Fire had the right idea.
Now I fear all hope for future generations is lost.

Ah well, don't want em to take arr jobs.

I think if you have the new iPad it would be rather hard to go on a smaller non-retina screen. But for first time iPad (tablet) buyers i think it is acceptable being non-retina.

I think the iPad mini will be targeting those people anyway, so it can get away without the retina. And non-retina keeps the price down.

After seeing how inferior the display of the iPad 2 looks compared to the 3 and iPhone 4/4s, I'd have to see it to make a decision. Then again, the Nook Color is 1024x600 and as an owner of that I can say that the non-retina display looks far better at 7" than it does on the iPad 2. Since a mini would be an ideal size for many as an eReader and gaming device, I think display quality is the biggest factor for its success.

So all those people who actually need a PHONE would suddenly have no need?

No I'm just saying people might get the mini and look into another phone since some don't enjoy having all apple products. I just think it may clash with its iPhone. Unless the no retina is just to keep the price down and affordable.

Okay, yeah, I can see where that could happen.

I do think the mini, if it actually happens, will have to be severely stripped down. I mean the freaking iPad 2 is still selling for $399 or less. I don't see how they can possibly sell a "mini" version if it's more than $299.

The iPad 2 is $399 and up, not $399 or less. The $399 version itself is the stripped down version with no 3G, no GPS, and the least amount of memory.

It is a mistake to think that the iPad Mini is only about price. Many of us actually want something smaller, lighter, and more portable. Even at the same price I would pick a well-equipped iPad Mini over a base iPad 2.

This would be the only thing that would stop me from getting one

If apple releases an iPad mini without a retina screen, would you buy it anyway?

This question is for the people that know they are going to get one for sure
If the rumors are true

I don't know depends what the iPad mini price ranges are the retina on my iPad 3 is kinda nice vibrant if the price is reasonable I'd sell the iPad 3 and pick up a mini

I might, I would have to see it first. The 7 inch Nexus 7 has 1280x800....so If its 7.85 inches (like rumored) and 1024x768 (rumored as well), It won't be nearly as nice. However, 1024x768 on a 7 inch screen is still great! Remember, most 7 inch Android Tabs are 1024x600.

With retina, it's an easy buy. Without retina, I'd have to use it first.

My usage case seems unusual to most. I work from home. Therefore, I have no real NEED for a fancy smartphone. I now use a disposable phone and it works fine for what I need from it, making phone calls. But it would be nice to be able to access data when I am out and about. I had an iPhone before and I hated paying $85/month for a phone when I basically don't use phone features, only data. Paying $15-$30 a month for a data only iPhone would be great. But they don't do that. So the choice becomes the iPad. The iPad is huge and I can't really imagine carrying that around when I'm just out at the mall with the family or what have you. It's so big, that you'd need a pretty hefty Man Bag to carry it around with you. A smaller iPad satisfies my desire for data connectivity in a smaller package.

Actually, I think it's a mistake to assume that the iPad Mini, if it happens, is being made for current iPad owners who want a smaller option. Apple lovers will mortgage their houses to buy an iPad Quantum at $100,000. The question is whether the general buyer pay $399 for an iPad Mini if they see that the larger iPad 2 is the same price, and the current model of the full sized iPad is only $100 more? Some will pay that to get the smaller size, but how many won't? That could be a problem for Apple.

I didn't assume that; I am not a current iPad owner.

I want an iPad Mini. I am quite literally the guy who won't care if a heavy, large, less portable iPad is $100 more or even $20 more. None of those are positive traits to me.

I suppose, but I don't see much chance of apple actually not including a retina display if they did that size.
