Probably not for me at the moment. I've got an ASD alongside an LG 5k 27 that I would replace now if it conked out. I thought it was on its way out a year or so ago but since putting a dock between it and the MacBook Pro I no longer have anybissues with it cutting off.

I would consider getting the new Studio Display to use alongside my current Studio Display if my M4 Mac mini were able to run it at 5k120hz. Since my Mac mini uses Thunderbolt 4, I'm afraid 5k at 120hz will only work on Thunderbolt 5 which would be a dealbreaker for me.

I have two ASDs and a 34" 5k/2k Ultrawide - which I plan to replace with a new ASD the moment it is announced.

Whether you like it or not, there's a reason almost every "high-end" display is compared to the ASD.

Nope. It will undoubtedly be under-spec'd, will not include an adjustable stand, and will be overpriced. We can easily buy 'more' monitor for about half the price.

Apple's Pavlovian psychology works on a lot of people...but not on me.

Nah Just buy a cheaper wannabe and then come on here and complain how it doesnt have all the compatibility of the apple studio display. Just the norm around here.
Yes buy the new display before its even out for testing yet!
Jeeze! :(

If Apple wants they certainly can restrict 120 Hz to Thunderbolt 5, but since the iPad Air has a 10 Gbps port and it is able to drive the Studio Display at 5k 60 Hz, Thunderbolt 4 (40 Gbps) should be enough even for 5k 240 Hz.

Greetings! With the rumored Studio Display 2 around the corner, I have a question to those who already own one — would you consider buying one when the new model comes out? If so, what makes you want it? If not, why?

In my case, I haven't made up my mind yet. I like Apple stuff, so I'd be tempted to get one when it's out. Promotion sounds enticing, though I work mostly with text. Cost isn't a concern either. On the other hand, I prefer a single-monitor setup. I could try a dual-monitor setup if needed, but I'm not sure whether two 27" monitors can be arranged without compromising aesthetics or comfort.

I'd love to hear your thoughts. Cheers!
As a software engineer, I've always and will always need at least two screens. Two 27 in ASD will by my next big purchase, along with a new Macbook Pro OLED(hopefully) to replace my M1 MB Pro.

Apple's displays are... too small. I moved to a 38 inch 5K2 screen years ago, and I won't go smaller.

Once I moved to a 32-inch screen, I found it 'constraining' to use anything smaller. I presently am searching for two new 5K monitors and the pickings are slim, 27 inch is the standard it seems.

The iPad Air may be limited to only 10Gbps for DATA (for product differentiation compared to the iPad Pro), but the iPac Air's Alt-mode DisplayPort video stream can be anything Apple choose, since it has an M3 SoC, so I don't think your arithmetic bears any relation to reality...

In fact, 5K/240 with DSC requires a UBR20 video bandwidth, which puts it in TB5 territory...
It's at least 6Gbps beyond the best that TB4/USB4 can manage.

As someone who works on "enterprise level stuff" we mostly use $500 mid-range Dell P-series displays and they are pretty good. Not even 4k. Mostly 1440p 27". We'll be done before your first AVP migraine goes away.
1) When I reference "enterprise critical" it is not meant to claim Fortune 100 corporate usages; my usages are just me. "Enterprise critical" is a specific term that means things have to work or the enterprise [of whatever size, can be a one-person operation] fails. E.g. tires are enterprise critical to a motor vehicle. Or in my case, Filemaker Pro databases need to show on an AVP perfectly, 100%, zero failures; like FMP DBs have been working for decades on my Macs with multiple Viewsonic 4K displays.

2) I have never had a migraine with or without AVP. To me the AVP headset is just another head-mounted device similar to other head-mounted devices, with no special drama to it.

No, I'll likely go 5K2K Ultrawide next time. I'll wait until consoles support it natively however.

Until then my Dell U2723 4K monitor does me quite nicely. :)

Nope! I am perfectly happy with a 27" BenQ 5k monitor. Even on its standard stand, I can lift or lower it, tilt, and rotate it from a horizontal to vertical position, and has it's own powered hub for daisy chaining other monitors and charging other devices. Mounted a BenQ Halo II light on top of it, and Paired it to a M4 Mac Studio.

Definite "no" on the new one. But might buy the current version if the price on the Refurb Store comes down significantly after the new one is available.

I think that's an excellent point to make. But of course, it would depend on what features the new ASD will have.

If it's simply ProMotion, then I suspect an awful lot of people would rather have the "older" ASD at a discount. But if it's more than ProMotion, I personally would have to think long and hard about the choice before buying.

Of course, if the new ASD is priced the same as the current model, and "refurb" price was only $100-$300 discounted, I would probably buy the new one.
