Would you buy the rumored new Studio Display?

LG has poor colour quality (blue tint at right side of screen) and frustrations with lack of native brightness and audio controls.

No camera built in either. Sound quality isn’t good. The LG stand is terrible.

Also has matte finish which doesn’t look as good as the Apple alternative.

However the LG is high resolution.

The colour quality is a concern. I expect to do photo and video work with some level of calibration required.

The lack of camera and speaker quality are non-issues for me. I consider the crappy versions included a net negative. I can hook up decent mic and speakers for a reasonable price and the iPhone can be used as a camera and I’d either do that or have them silent. My computer work does not require audio.

The matte being lesser than Apple’s I have evidence of as I have the 32” 4K from LG beside my matte ASD but since I consider matte>>shiny, it’s a lesser evil.

My choices are going to be the new Studio Display XDR or the Kuycon G32P. But I want tom know where are all the hands on videos from the Apple Experience? They invited all the press and influencers and all we have are a couple of videos of the Neo and that seems to be it, I can find 1 short and 2 videos, one in Chinese and one with music playing of the new XDR and that’s pretty much it!

Did Apple ban them all from making videos of the new monitors in person?

I think I will eventually will go with the XDR; not supper happy with spending more than I planned but in UK the regular Studio Display + Tilt and height adjustable stand is £1900 and the XDR is £3000. For the difference I think it is worth the mini LEDs and 120Hz refresh so I have a futre proof monitor for the next 10 years.

Fully agree. But my logic is also that the monitor is what I will upgrade the least in the future and what I use the most. As my eyesight is getting older I very good display would be appreciated.

Yeah I watched those, I was thinking more of the hands on videos from the event. Oh well, I will have to see it in person before I buy one anyway at that price. That won’t be easy. But I should be able to check out the Neo easily.

I've bought so many different monitors over the last 5 years or so and I kept going back to the ASDs. In an ideal world, Apple would make an ASD 5K ultrawide - that would be my ultimate Apple wishlist product.

My XDRs are preparing to ship and are due on the 12th.

If you don't want to buy one, do not go and try one in person. Because I promise you, once you experience Studio Display XDR - you'll have to own Studio Display XDR. I haven't even seen one yet, and I already know this for a fact.

What breakthrough? LG announced a min-led 5k monitor in 2025 with the same exact specs last year(LG 27GM950B 5K Monitor ) - they're just rebranding LG's technology and calling it their own.

Edit, oh and MSI also beat them to the punch as well with announcing the MSI MPG 271KRAW16

Well, Apple has beaten them to it, since LG aren't shipped anything until later in the year.

Apple doesn't 'pre-announce'.
What Apple has historically done since Steve Jobs handed over, is to decide on what product they wish to ship, and then co-develop a better-than-anyone-else product to their own specifications and QC standards.

With monitors they have done this precisely three times since SJ/Ive came up with the Thunderbolt Display.

Firstly the 27" 5K iMac, which Apple made possible for LG to produce by co-developing the necessary timing controller with another manufacturer.
This took from 2014-2017 to evolve into the iMac Pro's 5K screen, and this produced a quality of image still to this day unsurpassed by any other manufacturer, and is the panel used in the Studio Display Mk1 and Mk2.

The Pro Display XDR is totally an Apple product, with an unknown manufacturer (AUO?) manufacturing Apple's design.

So I think that the Studio XDR's screen panel and miniLED backlight's actual design specification, and the financial incentive to perfect, and produce it, is probably all Apple's initiative.
With Apple guiding LG to produce the product they want, at a quality they want.

Which experience has shown (LG's recent 6K introduction) is not necessarily the best LG can manage if they are left to their own devices...

As to the MSI 5K miniLED?
It is expected to be released around Computex 2026, which is in late May or early June 2026.

My guess is that this monitor also uses the same LG panel, and is a way for LG to sell panels that Apple QC has rejected...

I have also read online that MSI is still deciding if they will sell this miniLED monitor at all.
Besides, it also depends on the local dimming algorithms by each vendor, how good the monitor will be.

And my point is - following historical precedent - that once Apple had finalised negotiation with Intel (before early 2023) about the final details of Thunderbolt 5's implementation of DP over the TB5 protocol, they would have approached LG about a successor to the Studio Display's panel.
So any 'breakthrough' does not leave Apple as 'runner up'....
The opposite:
Apple's expertise is at a level beyond the run-of-the-mill monitor manufacturer's production capability.

No argument, LG is innovating, and providing display panels first to Apple, to themselves, and to MSI and others.

I imagine the local dimming algorithm in the XDR will be the best of all the 5K MiniLED monitors released.

I'm curious if the new panel has lower input latency and response times... Apple does mention gaming in the advertising material so maybe motion performance is improved.

I don’t know how the Apple A19 pro chip works in the Studio Display XDR but I guess LG display has not this chip inside.
So it’s not just a rebranding of LG’s

While there are professional uses for the XDR, photo editing will not be one of them. MiniLED is not appropriate for photoshopping and lightroom, because the dimming zone stuff.

I suppose you'd still need it for HDR, so a real pro setup might be dual monitors, a studio display and an xdr display side by side.

Which might be annoying because of the differences.

Huh? MiniLED rocks for editing any image that has deep shadow detail. Stuff that is just lost in glowy mess on regular IPS. Never once have I worked with a photo on the miniLED MacBooks and thought “this would be better with a single backlight”

I wonder how audible the fan noise from the Studio Display XDR will be. The original Studio Display's fans were audible to me, at least in my quiet environment. The Apple technology document says they were at 16dba, but I hope that the fans will spin dynamically, rather than at a fixed speed like the OG. Do Mini-LED panels emit more heat than the standard IPS ones?
