guess the [AirPod] stems increase Bluetooth connectivity.
They also contain the battery, aim the microphone(s) towards the mouth and contribute (by weight / leverage) to the AirPods sitting pretty safely in the ear. "Only" increasing BT connectivity wouldn't do them enough justice imho.

Fair enough

Just cardio today so running, rowing machine, spinning bike and cross trainer.

I'll be interested in how they hold up to sweat. Had the AirPods for less than 24 hours, really are a superb product, but I'm concerned how they'll absorb/deflect sweat.

I've used Plantronics BackBeat Go2's for years, they still work well after absorbing what must be my body weight in sweat

Are the AirPods rated for sweat and working out? if not we might not know for a few months if they would be good for those type of exercises.

Yeah, that's precisely why I'll carry on using my Plantronics at the gym in the short/medium term.

I've never used EarPods, well, ever. How do they hold up from gym use? Not necessarily a good comparison though given the amount of silicon in the AirPods.

Great! Exactly the type of sessions I do at the gym - keep us posted please :)

my thoughts on air pods with apple watch in the gym

air pods didn't fall out at all and I never even had to push them in to make sure they didn't.

they were fine and given how much i did sweat they weren't bad at all. The earbuds were fine in the gym and i will continue to use these in the gym.

Personally I think yes! I can't wait to get my hands on them and hit the gym with my EarPods + Apple Watch. I can finally leave my iPod Shuffle and iPhone on my bag.

I also have added incentive to work out because of the Airpods experience.

The combination of the iPhone, AW, and now the Airpods provides me the edge to perform more and better.

I'll know for sure as this coming year brings me indoors and later outdoors.

More specifically, the Airpods are not rated for water resistance of any kind.

Yeah, I'll be confining mine to non-gym use. I'm sure the AirPods will be fine in the short term at gym, but 3 or 4 months down the line, who knows?

Heck, my Jaybird BlueBuds X2's went bad after a 13 months of gym use. They still work, but the remote is very flakey and can't distinguish between 1 or 2 or hold presses. Makes them unusable for anything other than just listening, activating calls by accident and then quickly trying to cancel it is not fun.

Although, there is a YouTube video that shows the AirPods immersion in water. They did fairly well. I'm sure they would hold up to water and/or moisture. Apple likely downplays this, being they are specifically rated.

True, but will they hold up over time? Bit different to a quick one off splash in water. Sustained pressure on what seals there are will inevitably wear. I don't baby my devices, but I get the feeling they simply won't hold up to 3 or 4 weekly gym trips for a year plus, had too many earphones go bad on me historically.

Besides, I actually find my Plantronics BackBeat Go2's more efficient at the gym, I play/pause/adjust volume/skip tracks more often there than anywhere, and the buttons are reliable, responsive and the one area that it beats the AirPods on hands down.

It's difficult to say how long they would actually last when exposing to water. I personally wouldn't subject AirPods to water. But I can guarantee you Apple will expand on the water resistance in the future on these. It's crucial and certainly fitting to have the AirPods water resistant rated. Especially for outdoors and fitness.

Consumers are struggling to find a reason to buy a smartwatch according to the "experts." I pretty much love apple watch plus airpods though (already loved the watch but this really enhanced it). Apple needs to take that and go with it for next time. If memory serves, it was ipod that helped the first iphone a lot as well. ipod + phone + internet.

Apple Watch ipod and toss in some airpods with it = winner. Though I'd jump at a cellular one too. Get away from the health branding and focus on strength (not saying do away with health features). It's all about marketing.

I will never know as I hate in the ear type headphones. Not sure if my ear is different but they just do not fit well and do,not feel good to me. Always slipping out or causing pain.

You people enjoy.

Yes, it's the iPhone, AW, and AirPods combo (IWA) that will pave the way for the next inevitable iteration: the eye mask, for AR.

Wearables are inevitable and this is a great start.

Yes, wearable technology is easily growing and the Airpods have a lot of potential for expansion and improvement.

I'm now able to communicate with my MAC for commands and dictation, besides IOS.

This breathes a new life into existing apps and programs.

I've also become a better tech user.

This experience is closer to the HAL experience of the movie: 2001 Space Odyssey.

A great start to an interesting AI year for me.

To be fair though, it's not exactly hard to pair without the W1 chip, bit of a gimmick if you ask me.
It's not hard for you or me since we both are familiar with tech. When Apple announce the Airpods, people around me all want to buy it right away despite the price. The pairing thing might not be an issue for you and me, but lay people prefer something easier, and Apple provided that solution.

Any easier pairing helps.

I'm still having issues pairing to my W10 bootcamp, even though when I boot on MAC mode, Airpods connect easily.
