II would love to have a separate usb stick for all my movies and cd's but i cant justify the cost when i can burn it to a disc for 10 cents.

If you burn data to a DVD that you paid 10 cents for, did you actually try reading the data back?

My reason for not wanting a DVD is just a personal one...

It is obvious that Apple is advocating streaming media, but I think they should keep a model with the drive, or have the drive as a configuration option or something..Too many "average joe" users (no offense meant to anyone) still rely on their dvd drive.

My reason for not wanting one is that I haven't touched a cd/dvd in over 4 years. Not even once. I've never even had to reinstall Snow Leopard on my MBP since I bought it. I have a freenas server to stream my media to my tv. And Mac mounts .iso the same way it mounts a dvd.

For all the silly people who claim they need their optical drives to watch movies:

Why?

If you're at home, at a desk, then the external drive won't be a bother to you.

And if you're traveling / on the road / somewhere else, you're better of just copying the movies to your hdd.

The optical drive is loud, sensitive to movement, and uses a ton of battery. I don't see why anyone uses it except when absolutely necessary.

Ok ten cents maybe exaggerated. The other day i got 50 single layer dvd's on sale for 15 dollars. Around 30 cents a dvd. Still though 235 gigs four around 15 - 25 dollars. When flash memory is that cheap i will take all my dvd's and roll them down the street, but until them ild like to keep them.

Part of me wants to see the drive stay, but a bigger part of me would be very happy to see it go. It would mean we could have bigger a bigger battery, faster processor, possibly a better graphics card, and most importantly IMO a second fan in the 13" Pro. This little thing gets hot.

The other part of me wants to see it stay so I can keep my current setup with the optibay and 2 drives.
