I just stick with the 2G iphone and the data is only 20.00 a month which I can live with

I'd like to get an iPhone, but $30/mo for data is more than I want to spend. I would just get the iPod Touch and use wifi, but then I'd still have to carry around two devices with me.

I think you should wait until the iPhone Nano is released.

Is there anyone else out there who would buy the iPhone, but only use the wifi, and not 3G, if they offered it as an option?

worthy investment i have an iphone no data plan and i do just fine

**** no I wouldn't use an iPhone with just WiFi if I wanted to do that I'd get another Touch. Edge/3G is great for people on the go, yeah it sucks that they charge $30/month. They figure you gotta pay to play and I wouldnt give up the monthly charge phone+data which I make in 3 hours of work for a whole months worth of access that's just retarded to go back to WiFi.

here is how i got rid of the data plan

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/557095/

I have ATT as my provider and I have had the Data Plan off since End of August 08 and they have not put it back on.

What's the purpose of getting an iPhone 3G without the 3G service itself then?
You're sacrificing a great feature. But if you can't really pay an extra $30/mo why did you get the iPhone in the first place? Or is it the abundance of wifi in philly (based on your post) that made you to do so?

I'd just be satisfied for tiers of service. The $30/month 3G plan has a 5GB limit. Why not have a $10/month plan with a 1GB limit? I KNOW I don't use that much on my EDGE phone. I might use 200MB -- might. I have WiFi at home and can't do stuff fast enough elsewhere to do much damage.

Even with 3G, what exactly am I supposed to do to use 5GB/month? I'm not a YouTube whore, I haven't downloaded any songs wirelessly.

I've been wondering if/how that might affect things...

I thought about the touch, but that would leave me carrying that and a phone all the time. I'd rather just carry one device.

"Can't pay" and "don't want to pay" are two totally different things. I'd rather put the extra $360/yr into my IRA. Basically the point is that I want the convenience of a phone that will sync perfectly with my computer, giving me my calendar and contacts (and allowing me to add to them) and allowing me to check email away from home/office. And no, I don't want to buy a phone that requires additional software like Missing Sync. It's not like I'm talking about inventing a new device here. The iPhone w/o data is exactly what I want.

And I have the exact opposite problem -- I would love to have internet access on my Touch wherever I go, and wouldn't mind paying $30/month for that, but I don't need or use cell phone -- I would make at most 10 calls a month. If I could get a pay-as-you-go plan + data, I'd probably get an iPhone.

Maybe someone will develop one of those wireless network cards that can plug into the dock.

You shouldn't have signed the contract if you don't want to pay to begin with.

So far I don't know if there's a legit retailer that sells iPhone 3Gs that won't require a data plan with AT&T here in the US. I agree to Michael's post though, the $30 we pay is for a 5GB limit in which I don't even use all of it. Maybe if AT&T offered options for data plan then everyone will be happy (except for AT&T ;))

I would also rather remove the voice plan and just pay for data and maybe a pay as you go phone options. That's how bad AT&T is where I live. Data actually holds up pretty well but anything under the phone button for me is a disaster.

I had a blackberry for work that had this option. $40-ish a month for unlimited e-mail and data and then $0.05 a minute for voice.

I don't think I would. Many people have an iPod Touch and a dumbphone. What makes the iPhone desirable to many people is being able to combine an iPod, phone, and internet device. If you take away the data, you are left with a phone and iPod device. While this is great, it might not be enough to entice people to tolerate AT&T.

I would not have an iPhone without the data plan. I want the ability to use email, internet, etc. without having to find wifi.

After scanning zdobson's posts so far in this thread, it doesn't appear that (s)he's actually bought or signed anything yet, but was just testing the waters with this little poll. Maybe you should attempt to restrain your condescending tone.

(Irony noted. I'll go hang my head in shame now. Aack! Now with the sarcasm. Will I ever stop?...)

I believe it was proved a while back that there is no 5GB download limit with the iPhone and that limit is for tethering only.

While I would use an iPhone 3G without a data plan, I would much prefer it with the data plan. It would be a great device without the internet with all of the applications you can download/buy, but I think the heart of this device lies in the data connection. Weather, stocks, Google Maps/GPS- it just needs internet.

I have a 3G. The 3G has been jb for months and just recently as been unlocked.

JB = unauthorised apps
UL = any carrier

...that uses a SIM card (you didn't finish your statement), thousands of people would be all over it if it was literally ANY carrier. let's say for example, Verizon, doesn't use SIM cards therefore you cannot use an iPhone, either model, for Verizon regardless of what you do to the phone (as of 1/15/09).

EDIT: for the record, i would definitely buy the iPhone 3G if i was on AT&T and did not need a data plan. granted, if i had AT&T to begin with i would fork over the data plan charges to my parents for the data plan.

I have an iPhone 3G using prepaid and blocked data and installed a fake APN, I could still use Wi-Fi. I'm lovin it :D

I'm glad some people pay attention to what's being said. No, I'm not under contract with AT&T or anyone. I have Sprint and I'm out of contract hoping I'll find a good option. Sprint has great plans and coverage (from my experience. I don't want this to become a thread about whose coverage is better or worse), but no phones that I like. The Pre looks like it might be good, but I can't imagine it would be better than the iPhone (certain aspects might be better, but overall, probably not).

What functionality would I lose by having the EDGE iPhone instead of the 3G?

None really if you not using a data plan, maybe GPS, but your not getting much GPS use anyway in gmaps with out 3g data, so for those who do not want a data plan, just buy the 2G.

You're in the States, right? From my understanding (and the non-stop bitching on the forums here), it doesn't seem like you have much of a choice.

I've had an iPhone without data for a year, this is how it works.....

When you remove the data plan on the iPhone, which you are suppose to only be able to do with the 2.5G EDGE iPhone, the following things occur:

-the little E or 3G in the upper left corner of the screen disappears
-you lose visual voicemail
-you lose SMS ability, except SMS's from AT&T

You need to set up regular voicemail, which isn't all that bad at all, but you need to make sure you tell the CSR from AT&T to turn on regular voicemail. BTW, you can turn off data on the 3G iPhone, you just need to pay full price to do it (i.e. not $299).

Under AT&T you do not need to worry about apps on the iPhone using up bandwidth after you cancel. You are simply not connected when not around wifi. For those that say this is like a car without gas, if you are around wifi all day a data plan doesn't obviously matter; open your mind to other folks' situations without these needless remarks.

Also, you may cancel any time, and turn it back on anytime, and it is nearly instantaneous; I've done this several times. You also pay for what you use (i.e you pay half price if you use data for 2 weeks of the month).

EDIT: For those who want SMS but no data, I talked to a guy several months back who was successfully able to add a $5 SMS plan after cancelling the data plan.

There's no point in having the iphone without data in my opinion. You're better off getting a free razr or whatever instead of spending 199 or 299 or more for the iphone and not fully use it. That makes you a poser :D

Just because you don't have data doesn't make it pointless. The razor would be a huge step down in all regards. There are always lots of free wifi spots to take advantage to "fully use it".
