Also, how is apple still making the same profit if someone is paying $200 vs $800? That's a $600 difference right there. I'm not sure how it works with carriers buying stock, but that's still a huge margin between subsidized and unsubsidized purchasing.

If you buy a subsidized iPhone from your carrier for $200, your carrier paid Apple the full $800 and the $600 difference comes out of the carriers pockets. That is why the carrier (not Apple) lock you into a contract for 2 years so they can recoup the cost of the subsidized phone.

I've called Verizon a couple of times concerning this issue. They mentioned the only course of action is to call when pre-orders start and with a manager's discretion they will approve the upgrade. I'd still prefer to order online through apple.com and not deal with hold times and ordering over the phone with verizon.

If I can't preorder online when it becomes available I will probably just order new service through AT&T and then port my number on the 21st to avoid any ETF.

My telco usually gives me a 2-month early upgrade window if I choose to stick with them.

Say I bought a new iPhone 4s in 2011 November. I was eligible to recontract in 2013 September.

I imagine if that they want to keep your business and retain you as a subscriber, these companies usually aren't too particular about the exact date that you are eligible.

worse case, you can buy the phone outright. then return it to apple store when your contract is done and re-buy it. does apple allow 30 day return? or 15 now.

Verizon people. Check your upgrade date on the Apple Store website. My date has been Sep. 21 until tonight, when it says I can upgrade now!

Thanks for clearing that up :)

Lucky you. Most couldn't walk into a store and get an iPhone 5 until November.

Probably depends on on where you are, the carrier you're on, and the configuration you want. We're on AT&T, I bought my iPhone 5 (64GB) the morning it went on sale but they limited me to 1. Called around later in the day trying to find one for my wife and a few places still had 16GB Verizon phones.

Don't remember how long we ended up waiting but I think it was a couple weeks.

Holy crap you're right! Mine is now displaying today. If you check the third post on this thread you will see it said the 21st, just a few days ago.

Apple didn't even offer preorders for the 5s so your worry is too soon. We'll know if preorders are even available after Tuesday.

Pre-orders reduce "buzz". They make release day less of a frenzy at stores (less... not "not" lol), and Apple felt that on the launch of the 5 and didn't like it.

From what I've heard, there was a lot of discussion about whether or not to offer pre-orders on the 5S, and ultimately it was nixed because of production limits (there just weren't enough, especially of non-Space Gray).

If the 6 has ample supply (doubtful) they may do it. Otherwise plan on waiting (or do what I do and pay someone to wait for you... it's win-win!).

My hunch is no pre-orders. Last week I heard that was going to be the case from a friend of mine (who represents an Apple store manager), but evidently he bactracked on that a bit and it's now "dependant on how many they can make before the 9th-11th window".

We shall see, but I'm banking on having to buy a spot in line =)

Many AT&T folks have stated their contract can be upgraded now. Verizon is a different story.

I just checked my upgrade date and it's the 21st, with Verizon.

This means, we won't be able to place our order until that date, meaning by that time, the shipping times will probably have slipped weeks to months.

Now this could all be avoided if they either don't take orders until after that, or Verizon bumps us up :)

Well it's in their interest to I suppose, if they changed it now it would be leaking the pre-order/release date so maybe.

(1) AT&T (I can't speak for other carriers) will usually let you out of contract the month it's supposed to be up. So if you walk into a store and want to use an upgrade on the 19th, but you aren't eligible until the 21st, they'll almost always let it slide. I've been told they have no issue allowing people to upgrade starting day 1 of that 24th month.

(2) Apple couldn't care less when people are eligible for upgrades. They have never released the iPhone on the same day year-over-year and won't start now. A VAST majority of people who end up owning an iPhone 6 won't get it until after the opening weekend anyhow.

Because these carriers almost always let you out beginning the first day of the last month of your contract.

So if you're contract technically ends on Sept 21, you'll be eligible for upgrade starting September 1st.

Why? Because people aren't going to upgrade if they don't get bumped a few weeks?

Of course they would/will. The only people who want that (or that it's "logical" for) are the people who are desperately trying to get the phone launch day instead of *gasp* having to wait a week or two. Verizon doesn't care if you get it launch day or 2 weeks later... they know you're going to buy it anyway. And ya, if demand is off the charts you may have to wait a month or two... still doesn't change that you're going to buy it. It's not like they'll have tons on the shelf and they'll refuse to sell you one because you can't upgrade yet. Maybe then it'd make sense, but not when they'll sell out to people that ARE eligible anyway.

It's easier for them to just say no to the ineligible, and make people wait. It may not be popular, but it saves them from having to deal with thousands of people begging to get bumped.

Either way it's the same for them, so why add the grief during an already hectic time?

This really hasn't been an issue before because in previous years, upgrade eligibility usually came at months 18-22. It wasn't until last year that it changed to 24 months. That said, I don't see any good reason why Verizon would not let slide a couple of weeks or so when the alternative is the customer switching to another carrier just to get a launch day iPhone. Imho, it's in Verizon's best interest to let someone upgrade even a month early than to lose 2 years worth of revenue because they wouldn't let someone upgrade. From Apple's quarterly earnings report, carriers appear to be paying Apple just around $500 per iPhone so they're sure to have recovered the subsidy by month 18-20 anyway.

My Verizon update on both my iPhone 5 phones was on sept 4th. So some Verizon customers have early upgrade dates anything is possible :)
