I have a rather larger watch collection. I was taking some of the collection to my watchmaker for cleaning/maintenance and had to bring my car in for service. The Mercedes dealer provides me with a loaner car if the work will take longer than an hour (which in this case it was going to), so I took my belongings (including the watchbox with about 6 watches in it I had in a bag) with me in the loaner car.
After returning from the watchmaker and picking up my car I noticed when I arrived home that I didn't have my watchbox. I immediately called the dealer and he told me the loaner car was being cleaned and he would check the trunk for the watchbox. I wasn't worried too much because i have been going to this dealer for some time and it has quite a reputation for being among the best...
My Service Advisor had told me not to worry as they have found everything from diamond rings to huge wads of cash left in vehicles and they never once had a complaint about anything being stolen.
Unfortuneately for me there seems to be a first time for everything. When the dealership called to tell me the watchebox had been located, I was quite relieved. Upon picking up the box, I just happened to look inside and to my dismay, three very expensive watches were missing (just the ones with "gold" on them).
Long story short (ok, maybe not so short), I filed a police report, called my insurance company (home insurance) and was reimbursed for the market value of the watches in very short order. Yes, I guess it can be somewhat considered my fault for leaving the watchbox in the loaner car, but my point is, it can happen anywhere and one should check to see if your home insurance will cover the theft...
