What a copout.

Apple sells the phones in the UK, meaning they should WORK in the UK too.

If you bought a non-US car, would you say that it's okay if it just suddenly stopped working within a couple of weeks because it wasn't made in the US?

No, you would not, and a phone is no different.

You're clearly an Apple apologist.

You're right. I do expect ALL of the awesome British technology and automotive products I buy to work perfectly in the US. As an American, I'm so ashamed of the state of current US products, and the fact that I have to rely on British alternatives all the time. I really do think you Brits have a totally legitimate gripe about our American made junk not working well in your vastly superior country. We really screwed up that whole Revolution deal. Turns out we need England after all.

Im not an Apple apologist. But I do think its disingenuous for people of foreign countries to complain about American designed and engineered tech when their own countries don't produce any kind of equivalent or alternative. If British people are so dissatisfied with terrible American products, why don't they do what Americans like Steve Jobs have done and start innovative companies to produce great European technology?

And, to answer your question, If a British company sold a car in the US that didn't work as well in the US as a US made car, then I'd buy a US car. If the US didn't make any cars for sale in the US, and the only car I could buy were a British car that didn't work as well as I'd like it to, I'd have a choice between buying it or walking. But I don't think I'd whine about it.

The iPhone is designed in Cupertino but made in China.

It's assembled in China. Conceived, designed and engineered in America. Thus designed and engineered to work best in America first. The rest of the world is a lesser priority. Sorry about that. If you're too unhappy about it, buy a Chinese designed and engineered smart phone, which everyone agrees works way better than Cupertino's.

I can't think of even ten legitimate, separate reasons...give me a break.

I use it to find the entrance to parking garages during sporting events where traffic is insane. I've also used it plenty of time to find street parking and whether there is or isn't parking meters. You can save yourself 15-20 minutes going to a parking lot at an event vs going to the event then looking for parking...

Just like with Google, 3D buildings is useless.....

I'd agree that street view is pretty useful. I do think that flyover 3D is somewhat useful, however. Just not nearly as useful. I've been using it in advance of driving around a new city, to get some basic orientation and feel for the layout of the city, so I can better explore. But, if you're using turn by turn, it's not very helpful, whereas street view gives you a much better picture of what you're looking for.

Wow.

I'm a consumer, not a designer or an inventor. Apple didn't give me the iPhone, I paid them for it. I think that gives me the right to criticise what I paid my hard earned money for.

Grow up.

You're too entitled. You paid for it, and you don't like how it works in a country outside the one it was made in. So, the smart consumer thing to do is to take it back, get all that hard earned money back and replace the phone with one that works better for your needs. Or, if there isn't such a superior product, then stop whining. You grow up. Go buy a Nokia if you want better European maps.

You clearly have no idea how the world works.

If a foreign company decides to sell a product in my country, then it should work in my country.

There's really no other logical way of looking at it.

If I imported it from the US and then complained, then what you're saying would make sense, but Apple is intentionally selling the device in the UK, so it should work in the UK.

Looking for the sarcasm Nope not there... just ignorance

Are you kidding me? Most of the UK looks like this. If Apple doesn't already know much of their current satellite data is garbage they've got even bigger problems than we thought.

I'm sure someone did get shot here... about 3 years ago.

And a day in colour too it would seem

So your saying that living in Nottingham sucks the color out of life?

When I first read this, I thought it was a joke. But as I read more of this person's perspective, I realized it was anything BUT funny.
Somewhere along the way, I guess I missed the sticker that said "iPhone 5- Made to ONLY work well in the US".
And all you have to do is read the posts on MR & elsewhere to understand that your premise that it "works well in the US" is nonsense! A large percentage of the complaints about the phone, and the Map App in particular, are coming from places in the US.
Or did I somehow miss something and we gave places like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, etc back to the original inhabitants?
I'm an American, but posts like this one make me shudder and feel frustrated that the stereotype of the 'Ugly American' is alive and well for a reason...

Whatever. China Motors intentionally sells cars in America. I choose not to buy then because I like the performance of other cars better. So I buy other ones. If I bought a China Motors car and hated it, I'd just return it and buy something else instead of blowing narcissistic, entitlement hot air on a blog forum. Same thing with British products sold in America - like, say, bland crappy food. I choose not to buy it. If there were no other options in my country than the products of another country, then instead of complaining that the other country's product wasn't good enough, I'd first complain that my country didn't make any alternatives. Or I wouldn't complain. I'd take what was available. If I choose to buy something, I don't complain because it was a choice I made and ought to take responsibility for. That's what's wrong with the world today. No one takes responsibility for their own choices and wants to blame someone else and sit around whining. Just take it back and buy something that works better for you, like an Android phone with Google maps. Or a Nokia. Or whatever. But it you buy iPhones because you like them better, then realize that nothing is perfect, that its pretty damn good, and realize that it's reasonable that a country is going to prioritize its products' performance for its native country first.
Or go Occupy Apple in protest, because that's "the way the world works", and is, according to prevailing wisdom, the most reasonable sort of thing to do.

What are you talking about? He had maps he was perfectly happy with that were replaced with something inferior more then likely. Can't take the phone back now can you?

You analogy would be better if you bought a china motors car and were happy with it but then one day china motors came out and put a smaller less efficient motor in it....

You're clearly one of the ignorant Americans from whom we get the stereotype

Because I don't prefer your food? Maybe you're one of the arrogant Brits who thinks their ideals are the only ideals, from whom we get the stereotype. Or not.
I do like some of your beer though. And clearly European golf put us to shame recently.

Yes, because he took his extraordinary talents to an extraordinary company that happens to be in America. What's your point? That I'm anti-British? Not at all. My point is simply that its silly to complain that an American product doesn't work the way you want it to in your country, especially when it DOES work better in your country than anything made BY your country.

Yes, let's go back to the good times before international trade agreements - every country for itself and every region with it's own products. The day Apple decided to translate their site to my native language and open their online store in said country is the day Apple should be able to support that country. I know it's hard for many American companies to fathom but try this:

Open Apple Maps and zoom all they way out - that thing surrounding USA is other countries, yes it's true... there's a world outside.

One could make the opposite argument regarding cars - why can't Americans make good cars, everybody with taste in the US buys a BMW, Audi or a Volkswagen. Couldn't You guys just "make Your own" Enzo Ferrari or Ferdinand Porsche?

Yes, because he was a VICTIM of cumpulsory upgrading. He didn't make a CHOICE to upgrade to ios6. And now he doesn't have a choice to switch to a different product that works the way he likes. His only choice is to complain. But that's not what's wrong with the world.

Okay, if your car spontaneously combusts on the way of the dealer you bought it from you better not complain, because you must take responsibility for your purchases!!!

If nobody complained then nothing would ever improve. How would Apple know to improve the maps in my area if I didn't complain?

You have no idea what you're missing out on by not complaining. Companies welcome the feedback and sometimes compensate you for providing it.

Right. Because Apples maps shortcomings are equal to exploding cars. Brilliant.

Just pointing out the childishness and stupidity of your argument. It's a global market and Apple relies very heavily on foreign technology, as it also relies very heavily on foreign consumers.

The iPhone is designed by a Brit, and runs on a British designed processor. It's built in China from South Korean parts.

The whole of the Americas contributes only around 1/3 of Apple's total revenue. You may think that they build products primarily for US consumers - but the figures show how wrong you are.

If Apple has taken an arrogant 'little America' view on their mapping product, it'll be Americans who suffer. Japan has been the biggest growth success for Apple over the last year (33%) and from what I read, it's in Japan where the maps suck hardest. Watch those market gains reverse if Apple doesn't fix their problems pretty damn quick.

You do know that this isn't an Apple Inc forum, right? If you want to give feedback to Apple, then send it to apple. These forums are for people to help each other by answering each others questions about how to use their products. My complaint is that they get clogged up with whining and complaining that does nothing to fix problems.

Right. Because Apples maps shortcomings are equal to exploding cars. Brilliant.

Doesn't matter. Both are products that you bought, and both have faults that are no fault of your own, but the fault of the manufacturer (or seller).

Somebody is responsible for the problem and it's NOT the buyer. It's the company that creates the product.

You just proved my point.

---

Something else I was going to mention in my previous post, is that just because the iPhone is the best option for me does not mean I have to love everything about it. I can buy the product, use the product, love the product and STILL criticise things about it. Those things are not exclusive from each other.

I submit feedback to Apple and submit corrections/suggestions to Maps as well as what I post on here.

The description for this forum is "Talk about the latest iOS," and that's what I'm doing. It is not purely for assisting other users.

Do you think that Tim Cook would have written a letter of apology if lots of users didn't complain and the media didn't pick up on the issues people were having? I bet Apple is working harder to fix Maps because of the adverse feedback. Complaining gets you everywhere.

iPhone works well in the US. it's made in the US. You should get one of the great, innovative phones made in England. It'll work better over there.

Actually it is made in China in Taiwanese factories by low-wage workers.

However, I was made in the USA just north of Apple headquarters, so your comment really is misguided. Besides, apple does seem to believe that it is an international company, so I don't quite get your point. Maybe because you don't have one.

Pathetic.
