Do people really believe getting Maps up to Google standards is a question of a year more of beta testing? It is not. You can improve software that way but not map/POI data in a timely manner.

They of course should have taken that YEAR to IMPROVE Maps however they could instead of unleashing the DISASTER that they did hurting their customers, and if after a year the product still wasn't up to snuff they should have shelved it and continued using Google Maps.

They maybe should have taken a few month to implement an infrastructure for error reporting. But they probably just hadn't expected the *****torm the few unhappy would unleash.

It's certainly true they didn't expect the global "s**tstorm" that followed their release of Maps which underlines just how ARROGANT Apple has become and how LITTLE they think of their customers, thinking their "fanbase" would just bend over and take it with their usual reverence.

But it is beyond UNDERSTATEMENT to categorize the complaints as being from a "few". Rather it's actually quite BLATANTLY disingenuous and pretty much an outright LIE which could either come from someone completely UNTRUSTWORTHY or hopelessly IN DENIAL. In your case I suspect it's a bit of both.

Anyway, it doesn't mean they wanted to make bad software. It is one of the many examples where deadlines result in less than perfect software, just that in this case it is rather a problem of data and that is best fixed when released - which is what Google and other Satnav companies have been done for many years.

The lack of intention doesn't excuse the lack of ability. And the lack of ability doesn't excuse the release of "bad software". The point is, Apple KNEW its Maps app was SERIOUSLY flawed, and STILL went ahead with it in IOS 6 DESPITE the harm it would cause to the user experience, replacing the far superior and actually-working Google Maps which it contractually still had the right to use for another year.

And the myth of the issues of the Apple Maps app being "a problem of data and that is best fixed when released" has been thoroughly debunked. Having "users" report problems and essentially flagging the errors in the maps alone isn't going to come CLOSE to addressing all the problems which are far more complex and far more detailed than Apple would like you to believe with their simplistic "the more people use it, the better it will get" spin.

What surprises me is that Apple is not using crowdsourcing to get things better

I think that is simply because it is not as simple as most people think.

This is some insane amount of data where manual checks are impossible to perform. So they need to find people they can trust (in first place this are businesses entering or correcting the POIs for their own company, then Apple stores).

On top of that data comes from different sources and changes need to find the way back to the sources too unless make a complete cut.

Maps is out like 6-7 weeks now, that is a ridiculous small amount of time to make a concept for good crowdsourcing approach and implement changes to such a monster. So it will take time and I wish all the people still complaining would just switch to android and leave here - beating the dead horse won't help making this faster.

That's kinda hard - since there's no way to enter complete information about businesses from the interface. They will need to rely on ordinary users (like Yelp does) to help fix this. There's a direct benefit when businesses enter information into the Google back-end because that information is distributed to various services - same cannot be said of the Apple back-end.

On top of that data comes from different sources and changes need to find the way back to the sources too unless make a complete cut.

Which underlines how insanely stupid the implementation of Apple Maps is.

Maps has been out for months and "switch to Android" is still a dumb statement...

Do I think Apple could've released a Google Maps caliber app if they took what they have today and invested another year of R&D and map data contract negotiations? Hard to say. On the face of it, it seems pretty unlikely; but then again, we've seen Apple do some pretty unlikely things in the last four or five years. I do know that whatever they would've released a year from now should've been better than what we have today.

I also know that one of the reasons the Maps debacle has given Apple such a black eye in my book is because of their history of taking the things we all think are "just fine" and turning them on their head and effectively saying, "what we're living with now sucks and we [Apple] can do so much better." I fully expected Apple to do the same thing with Maps and they have yet to deliver. I truly hope the ouster of Forstall ushers in a new wave of creativity we haven't seen with iOS for the past two or three years.

I believe what we will have in a year will be better than what we would have got if they waited another year to release it.

Then I predict that this thread will continue on relentlessly trashing Apple Maps for that exact same year.

I would be happy if Apple & Google would behave like grown-ups, so that owners of this expensive hardware can have the maps app of their own choice with proper integration to OS features like App implementation (not web app) and Compass.

The current situation will be a 'plague on both their houses'.

They are competitors, it is like asking for the "one console future".

Sounds like it's really getting bad out there. I wish we could all just learn to get along and be tolerant and respectful, despite our differences :(

Apple rocket fire kills Googlers

Three people have been killed as rockets fired from Apple struck southern Google, amid escalating violence.

They died when a four-storey building in the town of Mountain View was hit.

It marks the first Google fatalities since Google killed Apples' military chief in Cupertino on Wednesday.

Thirteen Apple Employees, mainly militants but also children, have been killed in the ensuing Google operation. Since then, about 200 rockets have been fired into Google, the Google army says.

It says that 145 of them were destroyed by Google's Iron Dome interceptor system.

Hundreds of rockets were fired into Google by militants in Cupertino, and Google carried out numerous air strikes as cross-border violence soared in recent weeks.

Google said the head of Apples' military wing, who died when his car was hit in Cupertino, was responsible for all attacks from Apple in the past decade.

nothing is wrong with it.. i've used it several times and it was pretty spot on. hell, i used it when i went to NY and it was my turn by turn navigation.

Any information on when Google will release their own Maps/StreetView app, as they have done with Youtube when it was removed by Apple?

I believe they've said it will be several months, though they've also expressed doubts that it will even be approved by Apple.

Nokia just announced that they'll be releasing an iOS map app in the next few weeks, though they could have the same problem, of course. Reportedly they have good data, though, so if it works that could be pretty good.

Nokia's Maps are pretty nice. They have a great street view *and* 3D Satellite view just like Apple's. A serious competitor not just to Apple but Google as well. Check them out at http://here.net

However, they suffer from one of the same problems that Apple Maps does - poor quality of search results. Their location database, while better than Apple's, is still a far cry from Google's.

The maps themselves are only half the battle - to be competitive they need to have a great location database, and a great search algorithm.

Nokia Maps are absolutely worse than Apple Maps for Tokyo. Actually contains no detail.

My brain hurts from reading all the caps as shouting :p

Yeah hope so. I'll be very thankful and glad if Apple Maps is even fully-functional for my area by end-2013. Google maps work very well for my area, & from the leaked screenshots, the app interface looks very sleek & modern. Can't wait till it debuts. Probably be #1 on the App Store within minutes just like the official YouTube app last time.

I don't think this will happen. Can you imagine the embarrassment for Apple if they approve it? There's a reason why there are rumors going around that Apple has already decided to reject it.

I really miss the features that were on Google maps. For example

Accurate addresses for finding locations and businesseses
Street view, I really miss street view
Satellite images looked crisper on Google then they do on Apple's interface

I do love the Turn by Turn feature on Apple's maps, but that's about it.

Woah if they did reject the app, they'll be screwing us customers. They should approve it so customers have a choice to choose what works for them. Since Tim Cook already suggested the Google Maps web app as an alternative, I think there shldn't be any hiccups.
