So all the Youtube apps on the App Store are actually unlawful as they are not licensed ?

"Don't be nieve" indeed.

Please provide citation for your claim.

Of course all of the apps are not licensed as Google would love more people visiting their ad based sites.

Apple had to license since the app was included as an integrated part of the iOS.

My problem with the new Maps app is the lack of place data. I used to be able to type in my doctor's name in Google maps and be able to get directions directly. Now I have to look up his address, copy and paste into the new Maps app, and search for direction.

That tuaw article seems completely off base.

Don't get me wrong - I hate the maps also. But I live in Los Angeles and typing in Burrito as a search term brings up tons of restaurants. Even ones without burrito in the name.

Same with iPhone repair.

To all complaining about you tube app, if you are jailbroken then u can get an app called protube.. Awesome app that even lets u download videos and only music from the video too..

Ewww....

I tried to get directions to the one major airport in Oklahoma City today (Will Rogers Airport).... No matter what I tell iOS 6 either through Siri or directly into the Maps app... it thinks that the Will Rogers Airport is an Embassy Suites Hotel many miles away... ...try it for yourself...

Apple's maps app seems more beta than Siri...:eek::(

Citation needed at this point. Until then bs.

Are you ignoring my post? This is the 3rd time I've pointed this out to you in the last 2 pages.... Link to macrumors article with a quote from APPLE stating about the LICENCE...

https://www.macrumors.com/2012/08/06/ios-6-beta-4-removes-dedicated-youtube-app/

Apple has issued a statement acknowledging the removal.
"Our license to include the YouTube app in iOS has ended, customers can use YouTube in the Safari browser and Google is working on a new YouTube app to be on the App Store."

Dont be stupid. YouTube is a trademark. What was the previous app called? Besides that, apple are not stupid, and would not (even legally) build support for something without an agreement as google could then pull the plug at any time. Both companies have to take considerations like that, an indie developer don't.

Still waiting on that citation.

Indie developers face the same issues. If a license was required to play Youtube content through an app, an indie has the same requirements as Apple does. There are no provisions in IP law for "indies" vs "big companies".

You're missing the point.

Contracts like that only "run out" if someone wants them to. The license was about including it with the OS, nothing more.

no you're missing the point. apple licensed the youtube app to be PART OF THE OS. but apple decided to "not" renew the license and therefor took the app out. i understand it from the apple point of view, why support something from your rival by default. they clearly lost interest in it as the default youtube app on the iPhone hasnt been updated in years

No, you're missing the point. KnightWRX stated there was no licence or contract and he wanted citation that there was, I gave that.

If we go quite far back to the root of all this:

For Youtube ? What contract ? There's plenty of Youtube apps on the App Store, no contracts are required.

Don't be fooled, no contracts ran out. Apple is just removing Google from their phone slowly. Except in the case of Youtube and Maps, they either offer no replacement or shoddy replacements.

Perhaps he's not right about there not being any licensing, but the bolded bit is spot on.

No he is not!

Unless you want to claim Apple is lying (which Google would certainly call them out on), they clearly stated that the "LICENSE RAN OUT."

God...you people need to learn to read...

Apple decided not to renew the license. It was a decision that Apple made. They decided to give their customers an inferior product in order to increase profits.

Thread distracted

It seems to me that this thread has not gone completely off track but certainly off on a side rail with useless arguments over whether a contract expired or was cancelled.

For me the bottom line (as of today) based on prior comments and links here looks like this:

1) Apple maps is seriously deficient across Asia and is unlikely to get substantially better in the few weeks prior to release. Not a single post from anywhere in Asia found the Apple beta to be better than the old native app. Several found it unacceptable. There were arguments as to whether improvements could be made through server upgrades or if the OS will need to upgrade but to me this is immaterial as of now. One link provided quoted a Google executive saying that they still have a long way to go in India and I am sure they are devoting more resources to that than Apple is. Of less interest to me personally but still critical, Apple lags Google in the UK and EU but my guess is that the quality there will improve sooner than maps in Asia.

2) There are limitations to functionality with the browser based map applications. I found Nokia to be maybe the best on my desktop but in the iOS browser version I could not do a search for directions by point and click but had to type in the addresses. This is difficult because one is less likely to have the address handy when on the road and it certainly takes longer to type.

3) I will not be upgrading my iPad2 to iOS 6.0 at least until Google comes out with a stand alone map program like their Android app. I found the Android version superior to the iOS native maps back when I had both an Android tablet and and an iPad and I anticipate that a new stand alone iOS based Google maps will be the same. (note to fanboys: Sorry but this is just my personal opinion based on user experience. Think what you will.)

4) Most important I would think for Apple, is that I will not be buying the iPhone 5 that I had planned for my wife. As word gets out, I think others will make the same choice. At a time when Apple has already stated its desire to make inroads in the Asian markets currently dominated by Samsung and Android, it seems strange that they would shoot themselves in the foot like this.

I suppose we can argue all we like here but right now I am just in a wait-and-see mode. Lets just chill out.

But the disagreement above is in reference to YouTube.

The license ran out..they did not renew it...Google issued a replacement app weeks before the one ncluded with iOS has even been removed.

Maps is a different story...but at least wait until its released and Google has a chance to issue their own app before you keep bitching' about it.

What we need is google maps with turn by turn and throw Apple maps in the trash.........Steve Jobs must rolling over on his grave about the maps failure. I hate it on my iPad 3.

Satellite images are OLD and low resolution
No more Street View
And a little sluggish

Who you talking about Willis?

Not sure if you are referring to my post but I still assert that the discussion of run out vs. cancelled is wasted energy whether it applies to YouTube or Maps. I think I am not so much bitching as I am perplexed by why Apple did what they did with Maps.

Or is this simply a manifestation of Jobs obsessive "thermonuclear war" with Google? Perhaps it could be seen as Pyrrhic victory or even MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction.) ;)
