I'm going to sit our the iOS 6 upgrades on Wednesday until the situation on UK mapping becomes clearer.

On my iPad, the loss of YouTube app is also an issue - I'll be waiting till Google enhance their new app so it works on iPad too.

I mentioned this in past, I will say it again. In maps, amount of data is the single most important factor rather than all other stuffs. 3D (for both Apple and Google) are just plain gimmicks at this time.

The extent of Google maps that Apple would needs to match:

20 PB of imagery and published over five million miles of Street View roads. That's just about 20,000 1TB HDDs. 187 countries of driving directions of 26 million miles. They also have a map maker service.

If anyone wants to read more on why google maps are (and will be) superior, check this:

^^ A special mention about India in the article. For all Indians reading this, you will understand what tremendous challenge map makers have in this country. For Apple, unfortunately it would be even tougher.

Apple also needs to be come-up with something like a mapmaker service by google:

I hope that people complain a lot about iOS 6 like they did with the iphone 4 and antenna gate, enough that a lot of people start returning new iphones and apple is forced to give out free standalone GPS units to everyone. haha wishful thinking.

Not in this life time..

I am also seriously not happy about no navigation or even direction to indian users.

why the heck apple does this to indian users.

this is only feature I need and android does full navigation here.

Because it isn't ready yet.

People whine about features that aren't ready for primetime AND they complain about not getting early-access to untested and unreliable features...

Whoever decided to release that app without iPad support must be fired - I mean come on... unless it's a ploy by Google to disadvantage iPad vs Android tablets.

I really hope that Apple won't remove YouTube from Apple TV...

Why hold back the app if the phone part is ready even if the tablet UI still needs work ? There are a lot of more iPhones and iPod Touchs out there than iPads.

There is nothing wrong in deciding to release the Youtube app with a phone only UI for now and release the tablet part when it's ready. Why penalize 2 user bases ?

It's Apple's fault, not Google's! Who pulled the YouTube app in the first place?

It makes sense for Google to rush the iPhone version out first. iPhone 5 will be shipped with no YouTube, so Google need to hit that date.

There's no iPad release happening immediately, so the only iPad owners affected will be those who make the choice to 'upgrade' to 6.

It wasn't "pulled" as much as the contract ran out.

We'll probably never know whose 'fault' the new strategy is.

Contracts get renewed. Google wasn't expecting this one to lapse as it didn't have a YouTube or a mapping app ready for release.

What we do know is that Apple hasn't looked after it's customers well, leaving us with no YouTube app on the iPad, and maps which are more 'bling' than useful across all of iOS. That's not Google's fault.

guys, the youtube website works fairly well with a iPad, why everybody is looking for an app?
btw fortube is a nice youtube iPad app

It wasn't "pulled" as much as the contract ran out.

For Youtube ? What contract ? There's plenty of Youtube apps on the App Store, no contracts are required.

Don't be fooled, no contracts ran out. Apple is just removing Google from their phone slowly. Except in the case of Youtube and Maps, they either offer no replacement or shoddy replacements.

Just download the Google Maps app when it comes out on the App Store before the end of the year. Then everyone can be happy.

Except for people who want the API available to other third party apps to point to the Google Mapping solution rather than the Apple one.

Or people who want the OS level links from contacts etc to point to the Google Map app rather than the Apple one.

Or people who want the Google Map app to gain the unrestricted backgrounding it used to have which will not be present on an App store Google Maps app.

Don't be nieve. YouTube and maps were licensed products. As a result when the contract expires Apple now have the option to switch providers without penalty. They can then now choose to offer users alternative options.
The choice of the removal of YouTube at this stage was about money pure and simple not a penalty to the iOS users.

Well, i'm using Apple's new Maps app on the GM release and I have to say that It has really been a disappointment lately. Really slow and buggy. It has a LOOOONG way to go before being a true google maps alternative.

Apple's tendency to make everything proprietary has always been a big disappointment for me. I noticed it as a kid in the 80's and I see the same thing today. Apple won't always be able to maintain this lead in product aesthetics, and when that happens I expect their decline to begin, again.

I haven't had these issues that everyone is complaining about with google maps.

Been able to put in an address and get directions (better directions that google from my wifes phone). Also search works just as well for me.

I am not getting lagging, slowness, etc....
