Apple will be able to improve and update their maps significantly faster now that it is released to the public, due to crowd sourcing and more open development.
When??? From what it looks like, almost the entire world will need to be fixed just get anywhere near Google Maps. How is crowdsourcing going to fix the largest issues, such as mislabeled streets, horrific satellite imagery, and a terrible UI? Additionally, why should you and I be doing what we paid Apple to do? I'm certainly not going to pay hundreds or even thousands for their products just to have to fix their mistakes. Do you really think Apple will be able to accomplish a fix in even an entire year? No! Apple should have been working on the map for several years before they decided to release it, and never should have even dreamed of releasing it in its current state. To be honest, Apple Maps looks like one of the biggest blunders in recent Apple history. Rarely have they managed to not just cripple an application, but completely make it worthless...

I downloaded the IOS6 update, and this is the biggest reason I'm not in a hurry to install it.

I think of all the secondary apps (I think of safari, mail, music, messaging as primary apps), Maps is what I use the most. It's gotten to be kind of embarrassing, frankly. I feel like I can't go anywhere in the car without first plotting out the route, and checking the traffic. Love the app. I use it all the time. All the time.

I just downloaded Mapquest and a couple of other map apps to see if they actually work well enough so that I can go ahead and try the new OS. (At first glance, I see that Mapquest still relies on visual cameras for traffic info... doesn't google maps use cellphone signals to determine traffic speed?) And the visuals are certainly less sophisticated than the existing map app. The little car is cute, though.

Anyway, I'm waiting.

Awful I live in a blur apparently

Thats how I live my life...

Seriously though...How pathetic of Apple? I can understand wanting to move away from Google, but wait until you have SOMETHING to move to! So much for their "high quality" apps. Yea, Angry Birds is better than Android's, but MAPS are a HUGE ONE to half ass.

Do the Apple fanatics still think it revolutionary? Thank God I have the GS3 as my phone and the Ipad 3 as my tablet...

:( maps sucks big time. Seriously. Why release a product that is not finished.... this is so dumb I hope google can get theirs in the app store... shoot if they give the android maps version i will pay a buck for it.

So, Siri wasn't a Beta product then when it was introduced? ;)

we don't care though about siri. we did not already have something innovative like that.. it was new. Google maps had it all and now apple is givings us something with nothing. Seriously no transit times and like no tags on businesses.

It's either very grey and foggy where I live (six miles from the centre of Nottingham, England) or the area has zero coverage in "Satellite" view :D

I have "basic" road maps though, and I'm well versed in using 3rd-party apps for local Bus Transport.

Will wait and see, but so far Maps is a step-back for me, but maybe that's one step back to take two or three forwards? (I hope!)

I'm loving the new maps compared to the old version. I live in rural Scotland and everything works here so far (just asked for directions up to Ben Clova and it worked, and the satellite was fine).

Honestly I don't understand what all the fuss is about.

First test of Apple Maps Sucks, Really Big Time

Okay, I downloaded IOS6 to my phone an hour ago. Had to go to grocery store less than a mile from my house. Put in addresses... hit route.

Normal .6 mile trip is now 1.8 miles. All on roads that show on the map (both for good and bad directions).

I decide to drive the correct way and half way it does a reroute to get me out of subdivision. Seems cool. Then at end of street, within site of grocery store it has me turn the other direction and drive 2 more miles in a big circle.

The roads show on the map and have been here for 8 years. Sure hope it gets better.

I am thinking Google is sitting back and letting it fail before they release a new app to replace the one that works better, based on my one and only test so far.

The Map app is absolutely terrible, it can't even find local hotels, how on earth are you gong to use this to find information, let alone a Sat Nav!

Apple please fix the Map app soon, the iPhone is all about information, this App just does not work as it should. If this was a third party App you downloaded from the App store, the first thing you would do is delete it for not being up to scratch.

Wow that's bad

I thought it had tomtom logic powering it, therefore it shouldn't have these issues.

Sounds like very badly formed mapping data. Not good for an official release.

I've been saying this since beta, their maps suck!

Have fun with that! Of course the all knowing Apple says whats best, so no complaining now!

I'm in NZ.
The maps are terrible.

Doesn't show suburbs in Auckland, satellite images blurry, many POI are wrong.

How do I uninstall iOS6?

Perhaps this varies by country, but in Scotland searching for 'hotel' shows 9 of them within my locale. Moreover, so does Siri. No offense, but I would be surprised if the quality of mapping was higher in my corner of the planet (rural Scotland) compared to most places. Certainly that's not true of Google maps (my ex's place doesn't even show on Google Maps because it was built within the last 10 years or so.... Also, for some reason Google has placed a hotel across the street from me, but the hotel is actually 40 miles away. We get a lot of confused and irate tourists on my street because of that).

You can't expect the maps app to be perfect as it takes time to perfect things like this. Look at how long Google Maps has been around compared to Apple's Maps... I do agree it needs work, but I do prefer the graphic of Apple's maps. Looks much sleeker to me. It's still ways away from being perfect though. Give it time.

Map and navigation data is always improving. I have a TomTom and a Garmin as well, both of which I have seen similar issues with from time to time. Nobody has this down perfect.

Then why the heck did they not continue with google maps until apple maps was done? Its either Retarded or Arrogant (likely both).

Reviews of the maps have been awful so far. Like this one: http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2012/09/what-all-the-iphone-5-reviewers-missed-apple-maps-just-plain-sucks/

It's definately going to be a work in progress thing, and by the sounds of it, any non-US people may be short-changed for a while...

From what I've read online, even some one-way roads are not highlighted as being one-way. Street names are missing and different road colours aren't used well (to determine the different types of road).

I'm dowloading iOS5 for my iPad now (leaving my iPhone for the timebeing) so can't check for sure, but I really hope Apple do update the maps seeing as TomTom SHOULD have some decent data on offer

Until then, Google need to release a Maps app, just like they need to make an iPad YouTube app seeing as it's now gone.

I've been on the iOS beta for a few months. This is my biggest gripe - Apple Maps is SO inferior to Google it's not even close. It's the difference between useful and not.

My STRONG advice: Go to maps.google.com in Safari and add the shortcut to your home screen.

A really bad implementation by Apple (and I'm saying this after 4 months with it).

Agreed. Phase it in as a feature if it's not ready yet. Don't remove something which already works well while you sort our your own sub-standard version.
