Is Apple going to spend their time rolling out V1 with a "small college town" or San Francisco? Some dirt road village in India or New York?

You guys act like this product has been on the market for 8 years.
The removal of Gallery was a far worse "update" than this Maps "disaster".

When you are a billion dollar company commanding a huge chunk of the smart phone market and decide to tamper with one of the fundamental functions of a smart phone, despite there already being a very good service provider, then you better make sure what you are offering as a replacement is even better if not perfect. Apple has not.

Absolutely awful. I seriously want to go back to iOS5 because of the maps

I live in a large UK city and doing something simple like searching for a mcdonalds it tells me the nearest is 25miles away. There are SIX within 8 miles of me. Search for a chinese I get 3, I get over a dozen with google maps.
The maps have no detail, and are completely inaccurate. My favourite local restaraunt is listed as a generic ltd. company on apple maps.

Worst mistake apple have made in a long time - I bet google don't release a maps app as this is now a HUGE selling point for Android devices :(

really, just awful.
3D hurts my eyes with such poor resolution, looks like a war zone, trees like ghosts, cars are shopped out, so poor. Unbelievably poor.

After all of the bitchin' and moanin' on this thread, I have to say...I'm impressed as hell with Maps.

One thing I did check since it was a recent post, Shinjuku station does show the detail that the author was looking for...Google just shows the detail he was looking for when zoomed out further. Showing side by side Google and Apple Maps pics really isn't fair. Apple obviously felt that detailed info should only be visible when zooming in slightly closer to a poi to make it more legible...and I agree...looks great.

Man it takes quite the fanboy to be this blind.

Apple's maps are a horrible solution when compared to Google's maps. I get there were probably business ramifications surrounding them implementing their own, but only they won in the end. The customer gets the latest and greatest with missing features it used to have.

Most of the local towns are missing. Dudley is completely in the wrong place. Wolverhampton (a city) isn't shown though it will highlight it with a search. It's the same with West Bromwich and there's no sign of Stourbridge at all.

It's a beta product at best.

I have a friend who gives me grief for hating on Apple Maps. I'm sorry but Apple maps is a hunk of crap. Going from Google Maps to Apple Maps is night and day.

Several days ago I looked up FireHouse Subs. Got the info and followed along on the map. It came to a point where I was going, was obviously not right even though Apple maps said I was still not fully there. Suffice to say, it was 3 blocks off. Not even close.

The detail on the maps is a fraction of what it is on Google Maps. Maps is pretty much useless right now except for generic requests. It's sad really.

Wirelessly posted

So far so good, liking the maps and can't wait for more updates...

I like how Android map app is separate of the OS so it can be updated on the fly.

However that's not the case here, I think the app is OK just the maps and poi suck. But since that data s being downloaded it can be changed on the fly without our knowledge. So we won't need to wait for the next iOS to correct a lot of its problems.

Yes, I'm trying to look at the bright side. I was really hoping this would replace a bunch of other apps like aroundme, yelp, and waze but its obvious we are a ways off from that...

What do you guys think about the app itself? Aside from public transit reverting to another app I don't think its too terrible....actually I think its pretty good. Its just the content that sucks...

I am appalled by the new maps.

I loved google maps on my iPad (and on my iphone 4). Especially the TERRAIN view. Of course, the ugly-colored and annoying yelp-using apple maps doesn't have terrain view.

My main question is this: when will google come out with an app. And what will the app be like, will it have terrain, pins falling from the sky, etc.

Another question: when I use the google maps website instead, there doesn't seem to be a terrain feature either.

Finally, I guess I screwed myself by upgrading my ipad. Can it be downgraded or jailbroken back to the original google maps?

Terrible, just terrible. Do any retina tablets exist that have google maps with terrain?

Yeah.... It's nowhere near even the same country as Google Maps, but so far, turn by turn and basic maps seems somewhat functional.

Sad thing is, Apple and Google are no longer playing nice and sharing their toys, so we have to live with it until it improves, or until Google releases a standalone app.

Anybody have an idea what's happening? I can't seem to get 3D Maps working on my iPad 3.

I live just off Vancouver, BC, a location that IS NOT supported by 3D Maps, but I figure I want to take a gander, so i locate Vancouver (which is supposed to be supported), tap the 3D button, and nothing. The camera tilts and I can control it as if it were in the 3D mode (rotation and all) but no 3D. I try San Francisco, and same thing. Still 2D, despite being in 3D mode.

Funny thing is, it worked for me in iOS 6 beta 2 with my work iPad 2 when I located San Francisco, but now on the iOS 6 release on an iPad 3, I'm getting no love.

Is it because I live in an area unsupported by 3D maps? Or anyone know what's up?

All an app is, is the convenient packaging of content for a smart phone. If the content is terrible then so is the app.
It's fine and well looking on the bright side, but don't delude yourself ;)

That would be great, if it were true. Small College Town, Large College Town, Top Ten College Town, I haven't found a single college campus that maps out buildings and sidewalks like Google does. I go to a pretty large college and my experience is the exact same, Google Maps was very useful for finding my way around campus or to obscure buildings I don't visit much.

Now I am not here to rip Apple a new one, I think Apple needed to do this and am very impressed with the POTENTIAL of the maps, they are wonderfully designed, but the information is just not there. I don't remember Google Maps EVER being this bad, even back when it launched on the iPhone. I truly believe that Apple will make things better, but things are going to be awfully tough for Apple starting out. This isn't just geeks noticing things missing, your average user is going to notice the lack of information. The killer thing Apple really needs is something similar to Googles Map Maker. There are millions of people out there that would gladly spend their time trying to make Apple's Maps better, just like Google, but Apple doesn't really give them the option.

Oh, and another thing. I feel betrayed by apple. I trusted them to at least be equal to android. But out of their childish spite they seem to have alienated a vital ally, google. How the hell do you get rid of one of the main beloved and trusted tools of a product only to replace it with a highly inferior piece of crap, while highlighting some stupid 3d features no one cares about.

I used maps for everything, all the time. I go on a lot of road trips for example, and relied on google's high quality search results to get me around the country. I absolutely hate yelp full of its bearded hipsters and fro-yo eating 30-somethings.

And my beautiful terrain feature. Gone.

I am not looking forward to having to switch to Android either. But I might have to take a second look at the SIII. And I was a huge iphone fan.

Damn...just searched for something simple, "McDonalds" and there's one less than a mile away (btw I live in Orlando) and it doesn't list it. This could cause problems when I'm driving and searching for something like a post office or not as common.

When I search McDonalds, it locates the one close to me that was torn down a year ago. Google maps doesn't have it listed anymore.

Unbelievable that some are still defending Apple on their Maps failure. This is the final straw for me. I've been on the fence for a while between Android and iOS, and Apple's arrogant actions (and that of the moronic fools that defend them at all costs) have made my decision simple.

For those of you hoping for a prompt Google Maps app release, what makes you think Apple will approve it? Remember that Apple does not approve apps that duplicate iOS functionality. Even if they did by some miracle get the app approved, with iOS's inability to specify default apps, the integration would be terrible.

All you people should probably start posting your complaints in other forums.
If you really want Apple to remedy this you're going to need to drum up a whole lot more bad press than just this one forum.
Think Antennaegate.
Spread the word so much that Apple will be embarrassed into finding a solution.

I know that on MacRumors you should expect that people will be, to an extent, Apple fans, however I am completely surprised that people would rather have a map that looks prettier but is inaccurate over a map that is accurate and has more information. This is like saying that if a calculator ads 2 and 3 and gets 4 as the result, as long as it does it in a pretty way then it is a suitable replacement. This is absurd.

I agree. I really like it. Perhaps because I live in NYC there is more info available immediately but holy crap flyover is cool over Times Square. In my residential neighborhood, not nearly as impressive but it's similar enough to Google Maps satellite view. I just put a home screen link to google maps but i'm certainly going to give the new maps app a shot. Still lots of missing into obviously but it's a good start. Google Maps was pretty crappy before it got awesome. It'll evolve.

If you really need Google Maps that much, just put a home screen link on your phone and be done with it.

Side Note: the web app for Google Maps is actually *better* than the app from iOS5, at least in NY. It shows the actual subway lines like on the computer, not just subway stops.

You've got it.
Besides Google never promised that there would be an app.
They mealy mouthed around it during their own keynote by saying that they hoped to bring their new mapping features to iOS but they fell short of actually saying that they would.

I really effin loved iOS 5...6 on the other hand is really starting to scare me...I shouldn't have bought the iPhone 5 and stuck with my 4S on iOS 5 until they sorted this mess out (which will most likely be the 5S).

I upgraded my iPad 2 today to ios6 and the new maps app makes me weep. Will definitely hold back from upgrading my iphone until google release a map app.

I use directions in google maps all the time and this feature now seems broken for pedestrians. I typed in a simple 15 minute walk from my house to Waterloo Station in central London as a test.... firstly despite typing in "waterloo station" and then selecting "Waterloo Station" from a drop down list it insisted on directing me to Waterloo Body Station, then it offers me a choice of 3 routes clearly designed with car in mind and no chance to tell it i'm a pedestrian.

utter rubbish.

It also shows the First Watch in Dr Phillips as being located in Sand Lake (the actual lake).

This is bigger than MobileMe IMHO. I doubt heads will roll over the suckiness of Maps though.

Apple fanbois were shocked to the core today at the news that not only does Steve Jobs swear but that the sainted one actually declared that a Mac product was a pile of steaming crap.

Jobs' alleged tendency to rant and rage at his cowering VPs was revealed in a piece by Fortune magazine.

The piece itself is subscription only, but according to macstories.net, Jobs was reduced to foul-mouthed fury by the vendor's MobileMe service when it launched in 2008.

After reports of crashing servers, laggardly logons, and general crappiness, Jobs tongue-lashed the MobileMe team, asking them "Can anyone tell me what MobileMe is supposed to do?" When one foolhardy exec explained the aim of the service, Jobs shot back: "So why the **** doesn't it do that."
