I was talking about your post I quoted. I zoomed in a bit and more detail was shown. You said you have to zoom in a lot. Which you don't.

You have to zoom in more than the Google version to see details. That makes the overall usage of the Maps app more fiddly.

Go an compare the two areas in the two applications, regardless of the level of zoom, and look actually how many POIs there are between the two apps, and where they are.

There is significantly less detail in the Apple Maps than in the Google equivalent.

And it seems that many of the Apple Maps POIs are in the the wrong place.

Here's a screenshot of the worst traffic I can find. If you can see this, I guess you're getting traffic data.

Wow, the image didn't send. Let me try again. Sorry.

Whether its Google, Apple, or Microsoft, what upgraded feature or OS update is bug free? I don't think I've ever seen one... But I have to say that Apple really dropped the ball with ios5 and Gen 1 iPads..... It basically ruined mine, and it seems that even ipad2 owners are having crash issues still...that's pisspoor IMHO, and I'm really mad that they are no longer supporting the iPad 1 with iOS updates, or even patches.... And I refuse to dump a $400 machine that is only 3 yrs old because they think I should buy the newest every year! And now I find out the iPhone 4S is only available with 16gb thru AT&T?? I'm about ready to jump off the Apple wagon...

Hopefully this will work better and the traffic won't clear up before I post this :)

Seems to be a tiny bit off from Google maps, but not too much. Really wish they would color the "ok" traffic too.

It's ok guys. I created a new iPhone maps app. It's only beta but it appears to be on par with Apple Maps after only 5 minutes. A few more days and street view should be ok. Give me time please.

Apple should hire you immediately :p

Not really, Bing app uses Bing Maps, Yahoo apps use Yahoo Maps. Still allowed. Not to mention stuff like CityMaps2Go (OpenStreetMaps).

Not all of them use MapKit. There are Apps in the UK that connect to Ordnance Survey mapping data and OpenStreetMap. The OSM ones are very good indeed.

Good guys, that is addressing the argument properly.

I guess all that remains to see now is if Google submits an app and if Apple approves it based on these precedents.

I agree just because it's confusing right now, but I do wonder if this is one of those things that we'll get used to in a few months and wonder how we ever liked it any other way.

In my immediate area of Winnipeg, the Apple map shows streets that existed only on planning maps, and which the city "decommissioned" (I don't know the technical term) 15 or so years ago. The problem is that the Apple map plots routes starting from my house that use one of those non-existent streets. It literally would have me drive through a green space, across a sidewalk, and then over a curb to reach an actual street!

Clearly Apple's map is way out of date. This was not the case with the Google map, nor is it with the map in my Garmin GPS. I hope the Google map becomes available as an app for the iPhone. I'd gladly pay just to have the Google Street View feature available again.

My iPad 2 is rock solid on iOS5.

You'll be extrememly lucky to get 2 years of updates from any other vendor. Want to run Windows Phone 8, you have to buy a new phone. Not that manhy older Android phones will get ICS, including some of the flagship Nexus devices.

Even the 3GS, a four year old device, gets iOS6.

A more relevant question for you. Has your iPad 1 stopped working just because iOS 6 isn't available on it? Why would you dump it just ecause of that? You got three OSes on your original ipad, 3 4 and 5, so obviously Apple isn't forcing you to upgrade every year.

Why would you be surprised that ATT only offers the 16GB 4S now that the 5 is out? They only offered the 4 in 8GB once the 4S was out, and once the iPad3 was out, they only offered the iPad2 in the smallest size.

I might as well complain that Nissan is forcing me to upgrade my car each time they redesign it. Oh wait, my car works just like it did before the update.

I noticed that in downtown Toronto there are streetcar and subway stops listed on the map. But there are no bus stops anywhere.

I wonder what's up with that... if there's no built-in transit, why show these stops at all? The subway stations kind of make sense... but the streetcar stops? Hmm...

Is there really any doubt at all that this will occur?

Google's primary motive: get everyone to use their services (including maps)
Apple's primary motive: Get everyone to keep buying iPhones

If a google maps app is not released two things will occur a) people will stop using google maps (makes google sad) and b) many people will leave iOS out of frusteration (makes Apple sad)

An iPhone customer who uses 100% google services is good for Apple (hardware profit) and google (ad services).

It's win-win. I just don't understand people who think this won't happen...

Not fair! Now I have to clean the coffee I spit all over my computer screen off from laughing at this!
I expect you'll be getting an invitation from Cook to head the Apple Maps Department...;)

The nearest petrol station has been closed for over 10 years!! Ten years!! How can they still have data for these places?

This is what makes these maps unforgivable. Data that's 10 years old?! How can they release that with a straight face?

I'm sure it will happen eventually.

But it's not a win-win, as third party apps aren't able to do the things that the old Map does as it uses private APIs and provides APIs to other apps. The app store prohibits these.

Probably covered before, but lots of articles in the mainstream press slamming apple maps. For example, The Guardian (UK) says:

"Apple is facing its first significant failure in years with a major backlash against its brand new mapping service, introduced this week for iPhone users."

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/sep/20/apple-maps-ios6-station-tower?newsfeed=true

It goes on to document a string of ludicrous errors and omissions.

Journalists will lap this up and it will run and run and run.

I suspect there's some happy people in Google today observing the backlash to Apple Maps.

Its going to take Apple a long time to get Maps on par with Google Maps, or indeed any mainstream application - i.e., Navigon, TomTom ( even though Apple use TomTom's data ) etc.

Like others, I'm wondering why Google didn't release their own Google Maps iOS map? It is very much needed.

I suspect Apple knew this criticism was coming - they've had feedback from developers, they've done their own QA testing etc. Gimmicky Candy Eye isn't everything, such as the fly overs.

I wouldn't say Apple Maps is a complete disaster. Some of the errors have been quite entertaining! :)

Many people are trying to defend Apple by calling out mainstream media "getting things wrong", but what about Apple's own fan sites expressing the same complaints?

TUAW: Maps missing info dismays some iOS 6 users

MacRumors: Apple's New iOS 6 Maps App Drawing Significant Criticism

BGR: Apple’s iOS 6 Maps app is awful, and now the world knows it

Rather than everyone defend Apple with no regard to reality, why not just admit that the app is a significant downgrade for many users and accept that the complaints are valid?
