Youre trying to defend Apple by calling out mainstream media "getting things wrong", but what about Apple's own fan sites expressing the same complaints?

TUAW: Maps missing info dismays some iOS 6 users

MacRumors: Apple's New iOS 6 Maps App Drawing Significant Criticism

BGR: Apple’s iOS 6 Maps app is awful, and now the world knows it

Rather than everyone defend Apple with no regard to reality, why not just admit that the app is a significant downgrade for many users and accept that the complaints are valid?

I think this post is doing the opposite of what you think. It doesn't seem to be defending apple at all.

I'm not defending apple at all!! Don't know where you've got that from. I'm upset and angry about apple maps and am pleased to see so much press attention. I hope apple take swift action. Like going back to google with their tail between their legs.

Spot on!;)

It's ok guys. I created a new iPhone maps app. It's only beta but it appears to be on par with Apple Maps after only 5 minutes. A few more days and street view should be ok. Give me time please.

Love it, great post!

That comes from businesses being able to submit information about themselves to Google's business database. Apple needs to let businesses do the same.

Except Apple is getting their search information from Yelp. If you have a business and you want to show up in those Yelp searches, you have to pay. A lot.

I can't report any difficulties with the app seeing how I haven't used it much but on a positive note...the colors and fonts are purdy :p

Sorry, I read through dozens of pages and quoted yours. Apologies.

What I really dislike about the maps situation is the same thing i dislike about Chrome. Even if a superior alternative is made available, Apple doesnt let you choose it as a default. So when GMaps comes out then it wont be tightly integrated into the OS which seems very anticompetitive. (Well, at least by 1990's Microsoft standards)

No worries!:)

I completely agree. I've just replied along those lines to a post asking why people can't just use third party apps. They don't get it.

As far as I'm concerned, apple have effectively disabled a key feature of my devices. I love apple products, but wonder if this will be seen in years to come as a turning point in its fortunes.

Apple could easily correct this issue very quickly by temporarily releasing the previous built in Google maps as a stand alone app until Google releases their own.

But I'm 99% sure Apple won't do this as is basically admitting their app is crap which it currently is.

My area has gone from a very highly detailed view in Google maps to a grainy black and white image :mad:

Just glad the Safari version of Google maps woks great, apart from street view.

I'm sure it will happen eventually.

But it's not a win-win, as third party apps aren't able to do the things that the old Map does as it uses private APIs and provides APIs to other apps. The app store prohibits these.

Well I was implying win-win for google-apple. Your complain seems to be from a consumer standpoint. (Plus my argument wasn't that it's win-win to ditch google maps (although I do think it is, ultimately) my argument was that now it's a win for both companies to create and approve the google maps app).

But to your point, I don't really think there are many private API's. The biggest tadvantages I can think of for the native maps is lockscreen navigation and direct linking from safari/mail. But 3rd party apps can directly link to other maps. So I'm sure Chrome and Gmail will both have the option to open links in google maps.

I'll tell you why I think it will be a win for consumers (although it'll be rough while apple improves and while google prepares their app). Firstly, now google will make their own app which will surely be much better than the maps app we have had until now. Apple will continue to improve and likely bring innovations with maps. They both will improve because they will be more directly competing with each other. Instead of one "Ok" maps app that we've been stuck with for 5 years, we will soon (I give it a year) have two "great" maps apps. I'll admit it'll be a bit rocky over the next year...

I actually think this is the least damaging option for them. They can't fix their own maps quickly and competitors will milk this for all its worth.

As things stand, I will likely be checking out the alternatives to the iPhone for the first time in three years because of apple maps.

This is what makes these maps unforgivable. Data that's 10 years old?! How can they release that with a straight face?

Maybe you missed my post toward the beginning of this thread. They have railroad tracks running by my house. These tracks were removed for steel to make Sherman tanks during WWII!!!

Where they got this data from is beyond me. People that lived in this area for years have no idea there were ever tracks there.

I may be late to the party, but Apple can't even make their Maps App Logo correct. It's showing a left turn that floats onto a bridge or something below. The Google App Logo displays the bridge and merge lanes correctly. What a joke! Now I get pissed just looking at the logo. I don't even have to go into the App to get upset.

They had the Chinese work on the maps from old WW2 maps clearly. We have a huge international airport over the road from us, and it isn't listed either. Instead, when you search for it, you are presented with an old ww2 airstrip locally.
