well if we look at just this specific image, if you look at Swinton St and Frederick St the Apple version has the A501 wrong.

But more fundamentally Google Maps is much easier to read at a glance, it's colour coded so you know which streets are main streets and just how 'main' they are and where they go, it shows much more information including street names and which roads are One Way, it even shows back and side streets (around Calshot St)

I strongly suspect that this basic road only view that the Apple Maps is using now will not change one bit for the public release, and it will be disappointing if it doesn't.

But hey we will just have to wait and see, I won't be running iOS 6 until it's actually released anyway and even then if Google has it's own maps app then at least I'll have choice, and choice is the most important thing.

My issue with the Apple Maps in that image is that its missing a few bodies of water.

Oh my god! What a disaster! what ever will you do? Some incorrect road layouts in a beta operating system in a beta maps app!

They freaking flew over cities and took pictures of the tiniest of detail to bring 3D into the maps and you're complaining. WOW. Why dont you fly a plane over your hometown and take some pics then. Have you even bothered to really look into the 3D maps yet. Its unbelievable. I cant even fathom how you can do that. Even the smallest of buildings, even the tiniest of details werent missed to make it 3D. Even trees look pretty good in 3D.

Oh but some roads are a little off and theres some missing water.... well last time I checked people dont drive cars on water, so who really cares.

You really can't be this ignorant? What good is a map if its not 100% ACCURATE!?

This was an application that they were supposively working on for three years prior.

Also, the 3D maps isnt that unbelievable. Its nice as hell, but not "mind blowing" like the apple marketing machine said it was going to be.

I'm glad you like it, I look at maps for information, you know, like where to go, I don't tend to look at 3D trees or use it as a flight simulator, it sure sounds like you are won over more by gimmicks than practicality.

My issue is it generally looks like a student project.

True. Some people think a handful of 3D cities are cool. Well, yes they are. Useful? Not so much if you don't happen to live in them or travel to them.

Exactly, cars don't drive on water... therefore it would surely be helpful if the maps indicated that the "road ahead" was actually water rather than solid ground.

The problem is that Google has much more comprehensive map data than Apple. So the new technology is cool and smooth, but won't be as useful until Apple or Tom Tom can build up the map data to match.

not sure what everyone is so upset about

Lmao.

Seriously, maps is important. It needs to be correct and up to par with google maps. It's not a web browser, it's not a gimmick, it's not a design choice, it's not about customization. It's about accurate data so that people can get to where the need to go, or look up routes, no matter where they live. The world doesn't care if Californias major cities or the major Anerican cities are accurate. It only matters to them if their home area is correct. It's not like Siri, where if Siri doesn't support your language or sucks at it, that it's fine because for the most part Siri just makes a couple things faster. You can still accomplish those things without Siri. There's nothing enjoyable about navigation taking you somewhere incorrectly, or missing roads and locations; or sending you into a lake :)

As others who clearly know mapping have said earlier, this map data is not something that can just be corrected by a flip of a switch in a few months for release. The data will be what it is. I don't expect much change in apple maps from now until release. They may tweak some color choices or turn by turn, but the data is what it is sadly. It's a step backwards from Google Maps.
People need to quit freaking out because people are raising concern about this choice by Apple. Everyone here probably likes Apple, and using their products. But that doesn't mean we can't critique their business choices. They can make mistakes. Just look at Ping and MobileMe. Some of you people act like Apple is god.

If it took Apple 3 years to get this current state of maps, I'm curious what a couple of months will let Apple do with a full release.

Lmfao @ beta

Does anyone know why this is all I get, no matter which city I'm zoomed in on or whichever mode (standard, hybrid or satelite) I'm in?

Betas are feature complete. They'll be fixing bugs prior to release, not adding any more maps.

One question I have is, will everything be in 3D at some point or is Apple's plan only to have big cities in 3D?

Honestly I am surprised the Capital isn't in the 3D flyover view.

Your religious-like fervor would have made the Conquistadors proud, sir.

No one can deny that the Apple Maps look SO much more elegant and beautiful than the Google ones. The Google ones look so fisher-price and cartoony. Apple must have hired some real map makers to work on this.

The data is lacking in spots, but overall, using Google Maps is just a huge step back in every way. And I think it's amazing that Apple is still supporting the 3GS after all these years!!
