No one can deny that the Apple Maps look SO much more elegant and beautiful than the Google ones. The Google ones look so fisher-price and cartoony. Apple must have hired some real map makers to work on this.

The data is lacking in spots, but overall, using Google Maps is just a huge step back in every way. And I think it's amazing that Apple is still supporting the 3GS after all these years!!

You've clearly never used Android's version of Google maps and/or have been smoking bath salts.

It's sad when a fisher-price looking map is more informative than an Apple map. If someone dropped me off in the middle of Compton at 1am and provided me with an iPhone using Apple maps and an iPhone using Google maps I would trade the Apple maps iPhone for protection and use Google maps to find my way to safety.

Here's a napkin to wipe that kool-aid dripping from your mouth.

Look up the definition of beta.

well it looks like I was right.

No, I'm not. In a beta test, the datasets are complete and you're looking to stomp out bugs before a release. In this stage, you shouldn't be adding new features (which can introduce bugs and break older features) and you shouldn't be using placeholder data anymore, your Q&A data should be a straight copy from your production environement, or what will eventually become your production environnement.

Seems to me a lot of people here are misconstruing "beta" to mean "work in progress in active development".

Spot on.

Not only do I work in a GIS environment, but I am the one who tests the new versions of our software prior to deployment. We always use a full dataset (a full copy of our production server)

Wow, why are so many Google fanboys hanging out here?

All I said was that the DESIGN of the Apple Maps makes Google's offering look pretty pathetic. I think nearly any objective observer would agree with me there, and if you guys could take off your rose-colored glasses you'd see it too.

Nothing competes with an image like this:

Does anyone know why this is all I get, no matter which city I'm zoomed in on or whichever mode (standard, hybrid or satelite) I'm in?

What is with all these trolls? IT'S IN BETA! What are you expecting? Land? Water? Next you're going to be asking for roads. Stop complaining! You are obviously holding the phone the wrong way.

*sprinkle with a dash of sarcasm*

Yeah, it's a nice feature, but I don't use maps to look at pictures of cities, I use them to navigate and to get around. The 3D flyover feature is one of those "wow" features that's going to get boring quite quickly. I have google earth on my phone but hardly ever use it for the same reason.

They look very nice, but what is the practical use of 3D flyovers?

WTF? summer hasn't even started yet....June 20th is when summer begins.

you're just crying. put a pacifier in your mouth and get off the internet.

I don't need a dummy. I actually work in digital maps and know how long refining a dataset like this takes.

And BTW June 20th is midsummer, the days start to get shorter after that date.

I can't tell if you're trolling or not.

They mimic what we see. It's not intuitive to stare at a top-down 2D representation of a paper map when we're trying to find our way around. When you're walking around in an unfamiliar place, do you stare at the ground directly below you?

BTW for those who question me when I talk about digital mapping. I've been working in digital mapping since 2003.

It's a beta and their is no doubt that some things will change and I mean it will be cleaner a bit better looking for the final release. Though I also don't expect it to be Google quality by the time we get to the fall. That's not going to happen.

We will see how it is when it comes out in the fall, though I wonder if Apple might had "rushed" this in just to get Google out? I'd be interested to see what Apples maps look like for my area actually, all zoomed in on certain parts. As we've had a lot of road construction the last couple years that has changed a lot of things around. From roads that were two way are now only one way to some roads not even existing anymore. Google maps has already caught up to a lot of these changes. I'd hate to see that Apples maps have not and it sent someone down a road that is now only one way.

But I understand it's beta and I know some things will change. Though again I do not expect this to be Google quality and it will not be Google quality. Sadly that is what the every day people will expect also. They are going to open the Maps app up for the first time when they update and not even know Apple is no longer using Google. They'll like some of the new features then they'll see some of the other things and more than likely say that is a step in the wrong direction. I guess we will see how it plays out though I would had liked them to say with Google for a tad bit longer I think.

Lets see Google maps do that :p

No I'm not trolling. Maps are really easy to read and follow. I think a 3D flyover would be more difficult to navigate with unless you were walking down those streets at the time.

Clearly 3D flyovers could cause confusion when the streets you're looking at have changed a lot in appearance since those pictures were taken. Such changes wouldn't affect a street map.

When I'm walking around in an unfamiliar place I look for signs with road names on, which are clearly labelled on most 2D maps.

Let me put it another way: I've never been navigating using a map and thought to myself, "you know what, this would be a lot easier if the map was in 3D."

You're like me. I'd prefer an A-Z over street view any day.

So, just because people don't get on their knees anytime Apple announces a new product and dares to say there's something better out there, they're a google fanboy?

If you actually paid attention to the news Google also has announced 3D flyover views. And it looks just as nice: Google unveils new 3D maps coming to iOS and Android

Uh, the images look pixelated and horrible. You can't possibly compare them to the Apple Flyover images.

Ya, there's a reason this beta was intended for developers only. They didn't want enthusiasts flooding the web with complaints over an unfinished product.

A 3D rendering of a city I don't live. Who cares. Google held an event a week before Apple announcing everything for Google Maps that Apple Maps has. The Sydney Opera House will look just like that on google maps in 3D. What matters is the part of maps that people actual use, and Apples solution is lacking in map data compared to Google Maps.

I think that its likely that significant improvements will be made to the Maps App before it is released to consumers, so I'll be withholding final judgement until we see what the ultimate product is.

I do however think that it's likely that Apple will be behind the curve for a couple of years. Google's Maps have had years of refinements, so this is something that will take a while to catch up with. This is a huge undertaking that Apple may have underestimated.

I would not get too bent out of shape on this yet, but this is a concern.
