As long as you aren't on an iPhone 5 ... Downgrade to 5.1.1, it's still possible as Apple is still allowing downgrades.

Just download the 5.1.1 ipsw for your phone, put the phone in DFU mode, and option-restore from iTunes.

I don't really understand that public transportation stuff. So you know which route/trains to take but you can't anymore because maps is broken?

They blocked downgrades on Friday. If you have a 3GS, you can go back to 4.1. Just wait 24 hours for Google Maps app to be approved.

The transit information is timetables amongst other things - for my town it's also an overlay of the specific bus routes.

Took a 1100 mile trip with it, less than 1/3 of it was on the interstate, it got me right where I needed to go, and back home.

And that was with the iOS6 beta version. I've also used it locally several times and its worked perfectly.

In fact on the long trip it was more accurate than our Tom-tom, because of recent road construction.

All apple has to do is send drones out to hover over land. Capture up-to-date images from all angles. An put together a very high quality 3D rendering that is very up to date. If google can have a google car. Apple will have an apple drone. The technology isn't that farfetched either. They have toy drones now. With some serious money you can get a real one. And with apples missile guiding technology, and the right algorithm, that drone is a leap above a car. It's just needs to be charged and let loose! :)
While flyover is nice, it's not a replacement for streetview. Streetview has high-resolution photos of various small signage, which flyover will never have. (Well, not unless Apple starts using much better, possibly military-grade technology, which will get them a lot more legal/privacy issues -- because, among other things, Apple will be able to get high-resolution pics of nude sunbathers in their previously-private backyards. While streetview has caused privacy concerns, that's nothing to what Apple would get if they start taking highres pics of peoples' backyards).

And, please don't tell us that we don't need readable pics of signage. We are not you, and you are not us, and so you have no idea what we need/use.

One thing that I think would appease many and that even I would like to see as an option in Siri/Maps, etc. would be options. I was playing around with Aroundme yesterday and noticed how they give you an optoin of selecting the Navi of choice. How nice would it be for the iPhone to offer such integration out of the box.

I agree. Android let's you choose what app to use for actions and even to set it as the default app so it will do it automatically until you change it. Apple should take that idea.

Just imagine. You'll never have to use Safari or Maps again.

Knowing who has the self driving car - who do you think will be the first to have their own drone(s)? Google or Apple?

Beta products should not be released to retail and used in advertising.

PERIOID.

At least SIRI worked and wasn't replacing a BETTER voice-control product. That you can forgive. There was no free SIRI on the 4S, so it was welcome.

But taking an established, FAR SUPERIOR Google service and replacing it with some cheap MICKEY MOUSE Apple service is a disgrace. Just to reduce the visibility of Google on the device? Disgraceful.

With all the BAZILLIONS of dollars Apples makes on off cheap Asian labor and zombie-like customers, you'd think they'd do more homework...

And Siri has not been improved at all since release. I don't understand where it's falling down.

1. Say "Siri, blah blah blah"
2. It detects, circle spins, it shows "Siri, blah blah blah" for confirmation. So I know it hit the server and has been sent back to my phone with recognition and is waiting for the phone to do the next step.
3. Siri says "I'm sorry, but I'm having a problem right now." What problem could that be? Everything should be internal to the phone at this point.

Even when speaking in a loud voice with no pauses, Siri will still cut off right in the middle of me making a request. Other times it'll sit there still recording even when I'm done speaking.

I've maintained for a while that Siri is a damned impressive beta but never should have been released yet as a touted feature. At most they should have just included it in the 4S as a downloadable app with the disclaimer "We are trying to get this ready for prime-time and invite interested parties for a live beta test." It just fails too often to be a selling point. If they can get it working as advertised without constant failing, they're really going to have something.

I took a day trip to NYC on Saturday and the new maps for walking directions were HORRIBLE. I really wish I would have taken a screen shot. We were looking for a particular bar, so I put it in an immediately started laughing. It routed the directions entirely around the block as if we were driving and couldn't just turn around. Since there were barely any POI 's and no street view we would have to walk to see which way we were walking by watching our location on the map move. Finally after literally 25 minutes I see a sign for the bar, as we were walking toward I see the exact place we started. It was truly a pitiful experience. I just had no orientation from lack of detail.

It was all in good fun however if I would have been in a hurry or an emergency I would have been very upset. I didn't compare to Google's webapp but I used it before a dozen times in the same area, this was the first time I used apples walking direction. I'm going to Vegas in a couple weeks and I'm going to need it there.

It should be obvious by all the discussion that there is no quick way to fix Apple's Maps.

Apple can throw all the money and personnel at Maps and it's still going to take forever. The US Maps may be somewhat OK, but the International data is abysmal.

And, while Apple is taking forever, Google is going to be leaping forward.

Let's hope that Apple gets some sense and allows Google Maps back into the App Center.

It's about the only way to salvage Apple's reputation...

I can not speak for the quality or quantity of maps. However, I can comment that I just used the turn by turn directions and they worked extremely well. Very accurate and everything loaded really well. Overall a very smooth expierence. I was suprised because I have Sprint and usually on the Siri sucks. But it went very well. Anyone else have a good turn by turn expierence?

That is obviously wrong, I just had me navigated to and from work (germany) and I found it an excellent flawless experience (on iPad with a really slow connection). I will use this rather than my Navigon as long as I don't need to pay any roaming.

All the negativity is as always totally blown out of proportion.

What I can't get over is prior to iOS6 was maps even discussed as remotely helpful or cool or such a huge feature? I don't recall seeing it. This whole thing reminds me of a 9yr old crying and throwing a fit over his brother going in the back of a closet and pulling out a toy that hasn't been seen for months and acting like said brother just took his most prized possession.

Unfortunately, there's so much international criticism that it's pretty obvious how bad Maps is...

But I am glad that you had a good experience! A small ray of light, at least...

Just face it--Apple and Google will never get along and in order to keep up, Apple needed their own maps to offer turn-by-turn navigation--had to happen sooner or later and the sooner it is done, the sooner it will be perfected.

Navigation is just one of the Mapps app features. Smart phones were capable to do this one fine for about a decade now. It's not a great achievement on Apple's part. It's the lack of the information that comes with maps on Android/Google that is aproblem.

Well, if Apple did that first, sure they would have patented that concept. It's just totally basic things that corporates are patenting now. Apple started the trend, others are following up. These things should not be allowed to be patented. I won't be surprised if google applied for this after the recent aftermath of legal wars.

Apple patented vanishing scroll bars, so by same logic I can't see why this can't be patented?

People don't talk about things they don't have a problem with. Why would you? "Hey guys, my phone is working great! Ttyl!".....

yeah, it seems to be a serious limitation of human beings: the inability to see things from a broader perspective.
