It also took me some time to get used to the water zone, but I like it now. Do you leveling from 80 to 82 there, much more interesting than the Hyjal zone.

I have to admit, I was wrong. Sorry everyone.

I seriously thought that this forum would be over run with people saying how Cataclysm is the best game ever; and others saying it sucks dead donkey. I was expecting lots of posts.

Instead, it is quite quiet. Everywhere, not just here, but many other sites I read as well. Wow... either it is good and everyone is playing it, or people really are just getting worn out.

Anyway, sorry for the original pessimism.

Dude, this is a mac forum. Most ppl here don't play games (on thier mac).
If you want to read a looooong Cataclysm post, read this and see you in like a month when you're done. ;)

The headline is in!

Third expansion to 12-million-subscriber World of Warcraft sets new PC sales record with triple-platinum opening-day performance.
...Today, the Activision sister company announced that World of Warcraft: Cataclysm sold more than 3.3 million units worldwide through both retail and digital channels within 24 hours of release. Blizzard notes that this sales pace earns Cataclysm the title of "fastest-selling PC game of all time." ...

Speak for yourself. I have a 2006 MBP and regularly play UT2004, Doom3, WoW, RTCW, and a few others.

Plus we now have Valve's Steam for OSX, so I've added Portal and Halflife 2 to my personal arcade.

What I was saying is that MOST mac users aren't that into playing games of this class on their computers. Hence the reason why this is known as "PC Gaming" in the industry. Hence...you will not get as many posts on a "mac forum".

This seems like an extremely bold assertion. Do you have ANY evidence to back it up?

I have mixed feeling on the worgen. On one hand, they have a pretty awesome storyline and a nice starting zone. Great quests, good graphics and voice work. I really enjoyed playing through this area.

But on the other hand, most people aren't happy with the female worgen models, and the racial abilities are not that great: shift forms is cosmetic only, 1% crit isn't that much, and the dark flight +40% speed buff could be better, it's not that fast, doesn't last long, and the 3 minute cooldown makes it not all that useful. The increased skinning speed is actually pretty nice, but if you're not a skinner, you get no benefit, obviously.

My biggest complaint with the worgen is their story seems to completely end one you exit Gilneas at level 12 or so. You get shoved off into Darnassus and there basically become the forgotten stepchild of the night elves. You then follow all the normal NE questing flow through Kalimdor. There are little to no worgen-specific bits of lore to be found and they are hardly ever seen anywhere else in the world. There is a very small worgen village in the Blasted Lands and another one that got repurposed in Felwood. That's it. And as far as I know, they haven't added anything for them in Outland or Northrend. Duskwood seems a natural place to continue their story, as does Pyrewood village in Silverpine (which you will only see if you start a new Forsaken character anyway). They could do a lot with the story (it has ties to both Human and Night Elf lore, for example), but they just kind of finished the starting area, dusted their hands off, and dropped it. I'm disappointed in that.

Not really impressed. I like Flying in the Vanilla world but I miss the Vanilla world. The underwater missions made me queasy and I had to quit them and work on the Mount Hyjal instead. I have been playing since release, and I find the Burning Crusade to be my favorite area

Wel, actually the worgen/goblin racials are unmatched by other races. At least from the point of raiding.

What are you...a lawyer? If you have hung arround these forums for a while and are into computer games, you would realize that you would even get a a lot of posts suggesting that maximizing your gaming experience with many of the new titles (often even old), entails running the game on cheaper high-end Windows gaming computer.

This is a tired old topic where Mactard Zealots comes in all fuming saying "omg! That's not true! Mac's are ultimate gaming machines and everyone and their mom plays Crysis on Macs because that's cool". Join the crowd of the narrow minded. Why do you think this section is called "Mac and PC games", vs. "Games"? No one in their right mind buys a Mac because they are primarily interested in non-facebook games. And practically ALL video card manufacturers design for Direct X as their primary business. You don't need a 100,000 user survey as "evidence"!

I'm up to 83 on my main (and have 2 other 80s to work on, plus low alts). My take so far:

1) Visual changes to the zones are overall pretty great
2) Reuse of familiar NPCs from vanilla is awesome (like the farmers in Hillsbrad!)
3) Vashj'ir is a pretty awesome zone, especially if you like to PVP, because almost no one can fight and swim :D
4) Hyjal is alright, I only did 20-30 quests there, maybe.
5) Deepholm is kinda neat, not as cool as Vashj'ir

Let's not forget how the dungeons / raids have changed!

You can now do 10m raids and have the same rewards as 25m (smaller amount, to match raid size however). The heroic dungeons, are actually fairly hard and feel more like mini-raids than dungeons to be honest. No more 15 minute heroics. Extremely unforgiving in all aspect (Trash and Boss), I honestly do NOT see heroics being viable in PuGs for fair a mount of time.

The zones are gorgeous, they really worked hard on bringing new textures, and I've been amazed so many times at the new content (visually). As far as mechanics are concerned, while there are obviously the MMO-type quests (fetch, gather, escort, kill), we're seeing quite a few different mechanics to make things feel different. Lots of phased events and cutscenes as well, making the whole thing feel more "epic".

I only have one character to 85, I'm not one of those 8x max-lvl people, as I focus mainly on my single raiding character (we keep it at 2 raid days a week, so makes it easier on the RL =) )

So, in my opinion : Amazing expansion pack. If you're a WoW player who has a lvl 80, pick it up! If you're a person who's "quit" WoW and feels like they should come back : don't. There's no reason to come back if you feel like you did "the right thing" quitting the game.

This cracks me up, considering this is the MAC AND PC GAMES forum. If you don't play games on your Mac, don't bother reading the MAC (and PC) GAMES FORUM.

Once people learn the fights (and just throwing DPS isn't it) PuGs should be okay. What Blizzard did by adjusting the mob HPs up and lowering the damage is really extend the fights. Because the fights are extended if you don't play strategically you'll get wiped. Gone are the days of just throwing DPS at big groups of mobs, and I think it's a good change.

Apparently YOU don't. Dismissing anyone who challenges you as a "Mactard Zealot" sums your argument skills up nicely.

I am loving it, I am finally geared to start the raids and my guild has one planned for tomorrow. The heroics are brutal to groups that were new in WotLK. I am an old raider that has been around since beta and I LOVE the new heroics. They really are like mini raids and some encounters are just plain difficult. The graphic update is huge and the new zone quests are simply unbelievable. All in all it is a fantastic game.

At the Apple retailer that I work at on our University Campus (the best demographic to determine mac gamers) we sell 5-10 13in MBP a day. Out of those, i would say 1/10th of those computers go to people who even know what mac video games are. Let alone play them. They are sold to either "cool factor, need to have a mac students" or "the audio/video professional (or wannabe)" who wants to move into the upper tier software.

I repeat NEVER have I seen someone bring in a computer for me to look at, appraise or fix that has had a video game on it.

And NEVER have I had someone ask about gaming ability of any of our mac computers, whether bootcamp or native os x.

Now this doesn't mean secretly people are buying them for video games. Since I ask every customer what they will be using the computer for to see if they need less or more of a computer, (usually they do not know.) and I have yet to hear someone even say "light gaming"

I agree. THE MAJORITY of mac users do not user their computers for video games. I am the opposite of that though. So maybe not :)
