Good for them.

Bad for us. If Spotify eventually fails, then its one step closer to this "lock in" to ecosystems. Spotify has to make a profit on just the Music business while their big competitors do not. If they clear the field of the "Spotifys", and have you so intertwined in their ecosystem... well I just don't think that will end well for the consumer.

Spotify won’t fail because of Apple. The world is large enough for 2-3 streaming music services (I look at you YouTube). If Spotify fails it will fail not because of Apple but because of their financial performance.

Counting every Verizon customer as an Apple music subscriber certainly helps.

That's still a paid customer... it's not like Apple is giving these accounts to verizon for free. I'm sure Verizon is covering the fee, they might have an agreement that makes it cheaper but still paid nevertheless

That's great for Apple but I still prefer spotify in every way, plus I am currently getting Spotify, hulu and showtime for $5.99 a month total... Can't beat that.

Don't care what anyone says...When iPhones come with Apple Music preloaded, and the Music app/iTunes bombards you with Apple Music ads, it isn't a level playing ground.

Even diehard Apple fans shouldn't be happy - fair competition is good for consumers.

Stop complaining. It's Apple's service for their ecosystem, leveraging all the gear they sold and the app store they built and maintain. Spotify is wholly dependent on Apple and Google for their business model to work. You didn't see them complain about that "Google tax" did you? And there's more total Androids in the world than iPhones. Apple and Google provides BILLIONS of customers to Spotify and they don't have to do jack but maintain their own music app while Apple and Google do all the heavy lifting. No sympathy for Spotify and I say that as a subscriber.

They are going to have to do more than adding podcasts to compete against two of the biggest tech companies with the most cash, the mobile app platform and the customer base. You suggest Apple and Google stop offering music apps or make their ******** on purpose to make it fair?

Yet Apple Music still suggests Levels by Avicii even though I have smashed the "Dislike" button numerous times. Hope all those new subscribers love the "For You" just as much as I do.

If Spotify fails it will be because of its general business plan as it's just not a money maker, plus it fails to compensate artists while it's not making money. Apple music is an extension of the iTunes store (once the trend from owning music moved to streaming music with the prevalence of fast, reliable, and wide network coverage). It didn't just step in to compete, it already was competing and it's investment is paying off.

LMAO ... riiiight.

With Spotify having over 2yrs ahead lead time, along with being on ALL smartphone devices (Android/iOS) during that time and some integration with Shazam and other music search engines/apps ... even with Apple now owning Shazam ... sorry the excuses for poor business management and whining for just wanting to be a preferred music player on iOS just is a Childs move.

I hope 2 things occur in the EU case between the two:
1 up to date (less than 30 days old) statistics of ALL Android vs iOS users that use Spotify over Apple Music/iTunes on device.
Apple chooses - not forced chooses - to allow other music players to be the primary music player of choice by the end user. Oh wait let's not forget youtube videos do pop-up if you have the Youtube app installed.

Then Apple will further innovate and redesign the convoluted Apple Music app on iOS to be a better citizen and THEN we'll see what Spotify is really worth!!

.

I think that is a lot of BS! Most of my friends I know weren't even aware Apple music did exist in their phones and when I told, they weren't even bothered to try it for three months for free because they thought they would forget to unsubscribe! Now I am not saying that is the case for everyone but you trying to make it look as Apple is bombarding people with Apple Music adds, you should see Spotify emails on my account when I took a break from them for few months. Madness!

I wouldn't be surprised if part of this is due to Apple's slow start in the streaming music business. Most people who wanted to stream early on were already with Spotify or one of the other services, since iTunes was focused purely on downloads. People who weren't interested in streaming obviously wouldn't have bothered with those other services. But since Apple has shifted its focus, customers who previously weren't on board now are.

Sad day... Apple Music is still objectively worse than Spotify....
Why? There’s features in Apple Music that aren’t available on Spotify. Uploading your own music to the cloud for one. I like the music videos without having to view on YouTube.

If you like Spotify then stick with it. I find it a worse value for what you’re paying.

Spotify is allowed on iPhones and Mac so they can compete. The “advantage” Apple has doesn’t come from nothing, they made a successful platforms and they want to profit from it, it’s reasonable. Also, would have Spotify become as big as it is without Apple making the iPhone and creating the smartphone market, the App Store model and so on? And, I don’t use Spotify from a few years and I don’t know, but do they allow Apple Music ads in their ad-supported version?

RED ALERT: Incoming Trolls

Agreed. Apple music had a rocky start the first year with a very buggy app but its really damn solid now. Not perfect. But clearly good enough to overtake Spotify while only having been in existence half as long.

Yea I still think that Spotify is better when it comes to suggestions for the type of music I like, but I really prefer native integration with my existing music library.

Spot on!!!!! Bombarded with ads???? I have never seen one ad in the music app, not one. News flash, you know there is a setting to turn off Apple Music on the Music app???? Oy.

Pretty incredible coming in as late as they did. I am sure they look at this as an example for how they can see success with Apple TV+.
Nothing incredible. It's not important to be first in this case but to be the best.
