I don't get it. Of course the 4s will have the same form factor as the 4. If that is evidence of an iPhone 5 then it means iPhones 6-13 will also be announced on Tuesday

actually in reading the article, the general gist is that apple is "expected" to wow people with a new design, but that it is getting harder to differentiate on hardware alone. the article then puts forth that software is becoming the more important differentiator. they deliberately mention the 3gs was such an example of apple emphasizing software, and then point to the upcoming assistant feature.

to me the whole thing translates to "we know you all are really looking forward to an all new iphone, but apple may have run into difficulties attemping to make the big-screened, super-thin phone you're all hoping for, so we've been asked to gently suggest that you should be satisfied with software innovation instead."

to be blunt: i'm unfortunately thinking this is that prepare-for-disappointment article from an apple mouthpiece that we've all been dreading. different interpretations are welcome, though...

Well, the time has finally come. Wall Street Journal has suggested the existence iPhone 5 (link to the article: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203791904576606891661918466.html). This next-gen iPhone can't be the 4S, because in the beta strings for iTunes 10.5, the avatar for the 4S had the same form factor as the 4. Ladies and Gentlemen, this pretty much settles it. Both the iPhone 5 and 4S will more than likely be unveiled together on Tuesday.

Sorry. I know that there are a few posts like this one, but I felt it was important enough to make my own post.

This doesn't settle anything, and actually this topic has been brought up earlier:

here and here

Remember the matte back that people thought that the 3GS was going to get? Then it ended up still looking the exact same as the 3G with the exception of chrome letters.

Then people STILL lined up three nights before to get it. People don't care if its the same iPhone, people care if its an iPhone :)

Yup, but times have changed, and i can imagine that the projected sales won't happen if it's an iPhone 4S.

It'll sell good, because it's an iPhone, but i'm not too sure that it'll reach the high numbers people were projecting.

lighter and thinner design?

It could mean iPhone4s

Nothing in the article definitively states for an iPhone5
Your opinion isn't all that important though. Unless they have evidence, it not confirmation of anything. It's speculation. There's a distinction between the two, no matter how you feel about it.

Ummm, what? Do you understand what likewise means?

You may not like boss.king's opinion but he is stating the obvious where speculation and confirmation is two very different things. Nothing in the article suggests 100% there will be an iPhone5.

You opinion isn't important since you are convinced that WSJ reports the truth but we won't know for sure until Tuesday. Many sites have reported iPhone rumors, it would not be wise to stick to one site and be sure that what they are reporting is correct.

If Apple were to increase the screen size of the iPhone just a tad, say 3.7" would they still call it a 4S? Even if looked exactly the same as the current iPhone?

Thanks for explaining, that what I was trying to say :)
I didn't mean to offend, just stating that opinions are not facts.

No problem, I just disagreed with his opinion on the article and your post conveyed my thoughts so I decided to quote you.

By the way since you are here, any chance you can explain or elaborate on your signature?;) "You are now breathing manually"

I take it you know what it means? You got me, I think I might change it cos whenever I see it, I become aware of my damn breathing.

Ah

That's what I thought at first, by reading your message, one becomes conscious of their own respiratory system

Gotcha man, just thought before that it was a cryptic message with some deeper meaning

Congrats. This confirms absolutely nothing. Where does the article explicitly say anything about "iPhone 5?"

I think we might have a little problem here. The WSJ has a female reporter who is VERY good at "leaking" things about Apple. I don't see any recent contribution by her, which might mean that "new and revolutionary" might not be happening Tuesday.

If all we are getting is the 4S, then get ready for an avalanche of "I can't believe we didn't get a redesign" threads on MR immediately after the keynote has ended.

Agreed.

Even though i've accepted the situation, i still can't believe Apple would do this. I'm pulling for the iPhone 4S to be a major failure sales-wise. Maybe then Apple will realize that it just can't deliver incremental designs, and maybe should pay attention to the features consumers are looking for.

I wonder how many people are thinking like me:

I want a redesign, but if one is not released, then I will probably get an iPhone 4 off contract and wait for the next iPhone that may be a redesign or at least have 4g.

Or how many will just keep their current iPhone 4 and wait to upgrade when a new design is released?

That could really hurt the projected sales. I want an iPhone, but I don't want to lock myself in for 2 years just to play with Assistant.

You and I have been on the same page about this topic for weeks now. If we strictly get a 4S tomorrow, it will be the first time that people start to shrug and contemplate Android. Go look at the thread I started last week about deflecting to Android if we don't get a redesign. (Over 14,000 views.) Of course there are a ton of MR members proudly proclaiming they won't jump ship, but there are also plenty of other MR members who are hinting they might go Android. The 4S will be massively popular but I can honestly say Apple is starting to slip hardware wise if that's all we are getting tomorrow.

I would love a 64GB iPhone, but I'm not going to upgrade from my iPhone 4 just to get that.

If Apple doesn't give us a redesign by the summer or fall of 2012 then I will jump to Android. The screen is too small. End of story.

I think people are missing something, if Apple produces an iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 both are going to be 5th Generation iPhone.

iPhone - 2007
iPhone 3G - 2008
iPhone 3GS - 2009
iPhone 4 - 2010
iPhone 4S or 5 - 2011

I guess Apple is either really hiding the fact there is a brand new designed iPhone 5 (which I do not blame them especially after the leaks during the iPhone 4) or they are trying to get as much out of the design as they can, thus coming up with iPhone 4S. In either case there will be improvments over the last Gen iPhone regardless of what anyone thinks. There will be some like me who stick with their 4 and be happy, there will be some who get the new one, and there will be some who decide to go to another carrier or phone all together, in any case you can NOT please everyone.

I actually prefer it to have more battery material instead of less in order to achieve a thinner profile.
I could not agree more.

However the buzz (I'm in Silicon Valley this morning) here is that Apple has indeed completed an entirely new design.

The new phone is so thin you can fold it in half and put it in your pocket.
