I simply use Google Voice... unlimited text messaging for free

Me too. I only use it for texting purposes though, bec the voice quality isn't as good as I would like. I just tell people to text me at my GV number, call me on my mobile number. Works out well. Plus, GV can forward Texts to your gmail, and you can reply to texts through Gmail I miss fewer messages this way since i always have gmail open on my computer and i sometimes forget to check my phone regularly. One downside, no MMS on GV, so no pictures. People who know me just email pics.

That stinks. There were reports previously here and there that people were getting grandfathered. I haven't ordered a new iPhone yet, but this is kind of pushing me in the direction of seeing if I can get a better deal with Sprint....

I wonder if this is only an issue with online orders. Perhaps an in person transaction would allow grandfathering.

Just spoke to an At&t rep on customer service.

I was told that we could keep our previous text plans. Current customers are allowed to keep old text plans.

Maybe it was just something you couldn't do online?

I was told that once a change is made, you cannot go back.

Tricky hobbits.
I was not able to pick my grandfathered plan when I preordered from AT&T and also can't do it through the phone with a customer service rep.
What do you guys use for Google Voice? Is there a better app than Google's official app for the texting stuff? I ask cause I installed Google's app yesterday and it crashes constantly. It's worthless to me if it can't stay on.
+1 I would like to know more about Google Voice. So I can cancel this txt plan.

Your "holding it wrong" ;)

Heres what you do:
- Download GV app and set it to give you instant notifications

- Safari to m.google.com/voice, log in, and set that webpage to your home screen as an icon

- Any time you get a notification from the app, simply press on that safari GV webpage icon on your home screen and you won't have any problem :D

*** Personally though I use atomic browser and set it to load m.google.com/voice every single time I open the browser as my home page so that if I get a notification from the app I can just click on atomic and I'm ready to send a text msg ***

Are you saying they wouldn't let you grandfather your old 1500 per month text plan to your 4s? Or, did you cancel your plan entirely in the past and just now went to activate a new one?

I found out to my sorrow that I could have grandfathered my 1000 text plan IF I had chosen "none" during the preorder process. Yeah, that makes sense, right?

I firmly believe that AT&T deliberately made their pre-order process vague and uncertain so that grandfathered customers would inadvertently give up their grandfathered status.

Having to deactivate Unlimited for iPhone and activate Unlimited for iPhone 4S? Ridiculous.

I was able to keep my $5/200 text plan on both my lines.

Line 1 was a 3gs to 4s
Line 2 was basic phone to 4s.

I did the upgrades instore at an Target Mobile Kiosk (Radioshoack)

Wow I didnt know this. This is a direct result of iMessage. WOW.

Does it also apply to AT&T customers who don't have iPhones. iPhone isn't the first phone to offer free messaging. Blackberry has been doing it for years with BBM. Heck at this point I think many people can just drop SMS. People can either send you free txt messages via iMessage, or Facebook Messenger or the numerous other free messaging apps out there. If AT&T ever forces me to pay $20 a month for SMS or nothing, I will drop my TXT plan.

I also have the $5 a month 200 TXT plan. I was hoping I could keep it (along with my unlimited data plan) when I upgrade to a 4S in November. I plan on going to an AT&T store to do it so hopefully there won't be a problem.

Did you know it costs a carrier almost nothing to send your text/SMS message?? It's 99% profit for them.

This information is only mentioned in every thread about texting. So, yes, almost everyone knows this.

I just confirmed that my $5 text messaging plan was removed the moment I activated my new iPhone 4S. I was one of the ones who pre-ordered through ATT.com and was not asked to choose a text plan whatsoever. I had assumed my current plan would continue; turns out they just removed it.

If you have similar doubts, call AT&T before you activate your 4S. I didn't get that advice in time, but the CSRs should be able to prevent you from losing your text plan if you call in advance.

In my situation, since I had already activated, the CSR opened up a case number with instructions for their billing department to restore my $5 plan that was removed in error. It's supposed to be put back on my account within 3 business days. Hopefully that all goes well.
