hmmm that sucks.
well hopefully in my case since theyve screwed me around so much that they would give me a deal. Anyone know of the performance difference between a 2.4 SR w/ 256MB VRAM versus a Penryn with the same specs?
It's not a huge deal, but I DO play games and would appreciate it greatly.

Will they trip if I have a sticker on the lid? im gonna try to remove it, and put my stock ram back in since i got 4gb.

Don't know about the sticker but remove the ram and place the original ram in.

Yes they actually wanted the box the one with the carboard and strofoam one because they mail back the old laptop in that box back to apple.

damm, trashed a long time ago.

i just sent an email
dam i should have left my number like that one guy did.

this is what i wrote
To make it short.
I have tried 3 express cards for an eSATA connection to a external hard drive, they have all not worked.

I have spent a lot of time at the genius bar, more than 3 hours at a time, numerous times, and numerous erase and reinstalls later it still does not work.

please help
thank you
Ben Langdon

you guys think anything is going to happen.
i read most of the posts and am happy that apple takes good care of us.
i skipped a couple that were off topic, maybe they had info i missed o well

o ya im dreading the day i have to apply. first choice USC second san louis obispo

I dont know if theyll take care if you for the ExpressCard issue.
Hopefully.
My problem was that I got a Santa Rosa right when they came out and this thing sucks. Its great when it works but its the most frustating computer ive ever had in terms of reliability. I'd say, if you want a replacement, you need to have 2 or 3 major repairs done and in the email make it sound like youll never buy an Apple again. I won't if I dont get treated right on friday. Its stupid to buy a 2500 dollar machine to have it break down every few weeks.

So are you getting the 2500 penryn or the 2000 penryn?

they didnt tell me anything about what im getting as the replacement.
I better be getting the 2500, since thats how much i paid for my SR at the time and the fact that ive been completely frustrated with this computer. So, for their benefit, and saving me a bitchfest, they should give me the better model :D.

Ive been relatively patient so far, but im not gonna let them screw me on this one. Cause practically the only thing that hasnt been replaced on this machine is the screen, the keyboard and trackpad. And now its having trouble waking from sleep and some other random intermittent problems.

Does anyone know the difference between the 512 8600 and the 256?
How's the battery life on the new ones?
Anything else I should know?
Is the multitouch trackpad useful at all? I dont see too many circumstances where I would use it

Im in the same situation as u.

I also noticed that the base model mbp has a 3mb cache versus a 6mb cache on the upper model. I dunno if this makes sense, but I wouldnt be terribly happy to get basically the same machine with 25% less cache on it. I mean if a new computer rolls out, it should be better and more for the same price, not less. At the same clock speed, with a smaller cache, wouldnt the performance go down slightly?
Or maybe not due to the newly designed core, but does anyone know for sure?

Geek bench shows that 2.4 Penryn is up to 5% slower than 2.4 Merom

I wouldn't get your hopes up for the faster 2.5. Trust me I was all excited that I was going to get a 2.5 :) but when I asked They checked and told me I was going to get the 2.4 :( but all that matters is that getting a new computer. If they give you a 2.5 that would be interesting since they told me they go by specs and not cost. Besides if you look at this link http://tinyurl.com/296qsw . This link is a review of the new macbook pros it will give you all the answers you need.

so im basically gonna get a slower computer?
except for a little extra drive space?
Thats lame as hell

I'm not sure I'd put that much faith in GeekBench. Penryn is a bit faster than Merom overall.. but the Merom 2.4 has 1MB more cache than the Penryn 2.4. I really think it is all but a wash.

i would seriously go f*&^ing ape **** on them.
thats f*#(ing gay if they go by specks. so if you had the highest one a while ago and gave you the lowest one now.

i would slap a b*&^#

well then too bad you can get your old computer fixed or get what ever they give you. you don't have to take a new computer you can have them fix the old one. For sure they go by specs I asked 3 genius in the store. the guy in charge of the stores genius told me apple goes by specs first then cost. Also if you ask in a apple store how many CRU'S they do in a weeks they do very very few.

hmm well hopefully in my case theyll overlook this and give me the better one because I made the guy who "repaired" my machine the last time look like such an ****** as well as me freely expressing my dissatisfation with the Apple Store on my email to sjobs.
Im keeping my fingers crossed for this one.
But oh well even if I lose out on 1MB of cache, it cant be that huge of a deal, and Im sure ill get better battery life and a small boost in hard disk space in return. Cant be too horrible.
But I'm kinda getting my hopes up for the 2.5 hehe.

BTW, are there any overclocking apps in the event that I don't get the 2.5 to at least clock it to >= 2.5GHZ?

wow i got an email back:eek:
and they gave me a number to call someone  and it was his personal line:eek:

wow:eek:
yea he said to send him what my comfingurations were and what i was using and go from there.

i am surpressed,

this is exactly how i feel

well hopefully they will help

i doubt its the 100mhz nor the 6mb of cache that matters... its the hdd and the vram thats the huge difference.

Oh so wrong you are my friend! 256mb does pretty much sod all as the core CANNOT process 512mb, my X1900XTX can't so that GTM just aint gonna!

General (Email - Safari - MSN) OS operations it goes:
HDD >>> CPU > Mem > GPU Core > GPU Mem

Encoding:
CPU> HDD > Mem > GPU (either)

Gaming:
GPU Core > GPU mem (within reason) > CPU > Mem > HDD

Photoshop/Lightroom/Aperture:
CPU/Mem > HDD > GPU

If I was getting one I'd get 15", 2.6, 7200RPM and then, if you can, push for 4Gb. If not 4Gb 3rd party aint expensive.

The 512Mb comes last. As its pointless pretty much!

So upgrading the memory seems the most cost effective upgrade eh?

Depending on what you do, yes.

In lightroom I regularly fill 2Gb so when I have some free cash im getting 4Gb.

I'd be nice to have 200mhz more but hey ho :)

so I just got back from the Apple store and I'm happy to say that I got a new MBP!!!!
Yayyyyy!
Hopefully it's gonna be as reliable as I always wanted it to be.
To my surprise, they brought me a brand spankin new 2.5 GHZ Penryn with the 512MB VRAM!
Woootzors

Wow you got lucky. don't get why they did not give me a 2.5.

Shouldn't really be a surprise. The previous gen 2.4 was the top model 15" therefore they gave you the top model 15" for the current gen.
