Shouldn't really be a surprise. The previous gen 2.4 was the top model 15" therefore they gave you the top model 15" for the current gen.

they don't always give the top model they gave me a base model even though I had a top model mac book pro.

You should definitely bring that up and complain.
When I did they said they go by specs not price and they already gave me a base model plus made me wait 3 weeks. It was either getting my screen replaced the 2nd time and hope it works or take a base model mac book pro. if you look back in this thread you can see my post on what happened on my mac. I got my computer back from the store 8 days if there is anything i can do let me know

so I just got back from the Apple store and I'm happy to say that I got a new MBP!!!!
Yayyyyy!
Hopefully it's gonna be as reliable as I always wanted it to be.
To my surprise, they brought me a brand spankin new 2.5 GHZ Penryn with the 512MB VRAM!
Woootzors

wow this makes me want to have problem (knock on wood, i really do not want any:cool:)

Well it's probably because I wrote a really terribly negative review of the guy who repaired my old MBP the last time and I wrote sjobs an email about how many problems (2 major repairs, one battery replacement, and continuing intermittent issues with the DVD Drive) I had in less than 6 months and how ****** and unhelpful the particular people were at my local Apple store. As a result, I think they were ready to kiss some serious ass. They let me keep my remote, they gave me the new smaller adapter and have me basically everything that came in the box without the box, while I just gave them a laptop. Pretty sweet.
Good yanked my 4GB of RAM out beforehand.

So here are my current specs:
- 2.5 GHZ Penryn Core 2 Duo w/ 6MB Cache
- 4GB DDR2 667MHZ RAM
- NVidia 8600 GT w/ 512MB VRAM
- 250GB 5400 RPM HDD

Pretty Baller. Damn I just realized that there is an extra 90GB of HD Space now.
What do I do with so much storage? Pr0n?

Anywho, are there any other enhancements under the hood?
Is the DVD burner the same?

In comparison to my SR,
it seems as though the keyboard and trackpad are a slightly different surface (sturdier), but it could just be the newness.
Also, the display seems a lot brighter and much less "yellow" much more neutral and natural looking. I didnt notice it at first, but I guess when U have em side by side I noticed quite a big difference in color reproduction. This one seems much cleaner, and WAY BRIGHT!
Like, blinding, when looking at "white" colors.

How do I check what kind of display it is?
Now, its time for a Time Machine restore to get all my files back, as well as thermal paste re-application.

This MBP seems a lot cooler too. Anyone else have any similar comparisons between SR and Penryn?

Hmm, one thing that I have noticed on my new box that I dont know what to think about is:
the new "smaller" power adapter creates a low-volume buzzing humming sound.

Is this normal?
I never noticed any sound coming from the power block, but I never really listened to it either, so this kinda caught me by surprise.
Anyone know?

Its normal for it to make a slight high pitched buzz. Its interesting to note that the pitch of the buzz changes with the demand of power from the MBP.

Ok guys so I'm using Migration Assistant's script to restore using a Time Machine Backup.
Is this going to completely revert my Mac to how it was yesterday with the older hardware? Or is it just gonna install SOME things?
I checked all the settings that re possible to restore, so hopefully Ill get my iTunes music (which is the most important) back and apps and emails.

Has anybody had any problems migrating from an older box to a newer box using a time machine restore?

Also, is there a differnce between using a "Time Machine Restore" versus the Migration Assistant's Time Machine Restore function?

Yeah I noticed that. When there is no load on the power brick (disconnected MBP), it makes no noise at all.

Even though i had time machine setup, i did the migration of my itunes library and documents into my new MBP manually(drag and drop) as i heard about issues of different drivers between the merom and penryn MBP, so to be safe from everything, i spent a little more time and did it manually.

Yeah I read that too. But I decided to try it anyway as I was assured by the Genius who helped me that there wouldn't be a problem, even though this box has a different build of OSX. I think its only problematic if you restore from a blank drive onto new hardware, but my OSX is already installed and up to date. Im just adding all the apps and files. Lets see. It appears that my restore is done...

So I just logged out of my "clean" brand new profile into my "laptop of yesterday" and so far so good. I dont know if the performance is any different or anything, but only a few applications are missing, and my modded dock. All my music is back as well as my emails and everything. Yayy!!
This is pretty amazing that it can be this simple. How do I check what kind of screen I have?

I just ran yes > dev/null/ or whatever in console (2 windows) and a itunes visualizer and it looks like my temps max out at around 77C, which used to be around 85C on the old machine. Idle temp is 47-48C. Both temperatures are with the fans running at 2k RPM. Sounds about what other people are getting?

Now time to geekbench it and calibrate the screen. Yatta!

Display prefpane->colour->select Colour LCD->open profile->row 13->model number

the auto dimming can be solved with the "Automatically adjust brightness" checkbox at the Display tab of the display prefpane. Or maybe it is the Energy saver prefpane->options->"automatically reduce brightness"

talking about choosing the color lcd profile
i calibrated it last night and omg is the old profile horrid
i mean absolutely disgusting

i highly suggest calibrating your screen and click expert mode

it takes a little bit of time (10 min) but is totally worth it, and squint your eyes like it says, it makes it work well
