Earlier than it has been the last two years. I wonder if this signifies something or nothing at all?

That ran through my mind also. It's definitely earlier than last year. Only time will tell, at least now we have less than four months till a Stevenote.

HEHEHEH. Thanks for the laugh. The PowerMac currently is at least within the ballpark of competing PC desktops. The same can't in any way, shape, or form be said for the PowerBook so please get off the fact that the PM hasn't hit 3Ghz. Oh boo hoo. Jobs didn't live up to his promise. If there is any one product that needs a major overhaul it sure as heck isn't the PowerMac.

Umm, I wasn't laughing.
I also seem to recall the powerbook just had a speed bump didn't it? Or was I just dreaming?
Steve never promised a G5 powerbook. Is it so much to ask somebody to live upto his promise? I've given him almost two years without fussing at people like you pbG5ers have done.

Oh please. How do you expect him to do that? If it's not available, it's not available. Do you expect him to go to IBM's lab and sit down and get to work on it himsel?. Besides, Steve didn't "promise" anything. When you hear a CEO announce something that you know is completely beyond his control, you should have enough common sense to not take it at face value.

Should he have promised it (again, I don't think he actually said "I promise")? No, I agree. But do you have justification to be angry at him for breaking his "promise"? Only if you are stupid enough to think he has personal ability to do something about it - which I don't think you are.

I'd like to buy an Apple but I'm scared of buying something obsolete.

*Any* computer or related item that you buy will be "obsolete" 30 minutes after you buy it.

Does this include scaling of images? I would love a higher resolution screen as I spend most of my time in Eclipse and Final Cut Pro. The main problem would be web sites that use text in images. Today, the body of the page can be scaled easily, but not the images. (ie: www.apple.com)

Try Opera for a browser. It allows you to scale the entire page, images as well...

20" Powerbook?

Would anyone consider buying one. I was at the apple store yesterday and realized it would look pretty good attached to a new Powerbook.

That would be hilarious! They could put a big foldy handle on it like it was a briefcase and one of those locks with the 3 digit number on it, maybe even some flip-up latches! Maybe even wheels on one end and a telescoping handle!

Do a mock-up!!

PBG5

Now seriouslly guys, PBG5 I would bet my AAPL Stock on it, which I'm getting soon, that it's not coming till WWSF 2006. Well with the whole new cell dealy, I think Jobs will incorporate a cell with the G5 Processor which will utilize it to its largest capability. So, I would say we could see a low powered g5 at about 1.5 or 1.6 ghz, but with the cell processor being integrated, it could reach 2 or 2.5 ghz. You guys should look into the cell, first test run it was running about 4 ghz. So i will say Definitelty a pm upgrade. also you guys should read the article about sony-apple partnership. this is what jobs ment by year of the HD.

not pessimist, just realist

Hate to say it, but I doubt PBG5 at WWDC. The way shipping is going with the Rev D G4 PB's, some people will have their PB only a couple months when that "announcement" would take place.

Go check out used PB's. See what their price is carrying. take the pepsi challenge. PC's loose their value because there is such a flooded marketplace.

Well actually....
I have 4 xserve g5's with 16 GB ram right now... They are running Linux
And we have at least a dozen PMG5's with 8GB ram in our office. 1 is at my desk. ;)

By the way 2GB pc3200 ECC can be had for a little over $500 ea check pricewatch.

Oh wow thanks

That must be one mega setup what work do you do

Then by your same statements, powerbookG5 peeps should shutup and live without having one till it's ready.

Point made?

PS I never said I was angry at him.

I don't know if anyone remembers this, but, when it comes to Apple releases, the last release before a major change (like switching to a new processor family) is always released with very little fanfare and is usually nothing more than a simple speedbump. The most recent PowerBook release does NOT fit this description; therefore, I strongly believe that there will be one more "Rev. E" PowerBook G4 before the PowerBook G5 appears, and it will appear after WWDC 2005 - sometime in August or September 2005, I would guess that the "Rev. E" PowerBook appears. Then, sometime between MWSF 2006 and NAB 2006, either we'll see a PowerBook G5, or Apple will release something else entirely different to replace the "Rev. E" PowerBook.

I think Tiger will most likely be released on or before WWDC 2005. It's entirely possible that it won't arrive until mid- or late June.

While this may be true, remember that the 7447A was announced in February 2004, and was already in Powerbooks by April of that year.

And if not dual-core or G5, we could see (god forbid) another revision using the 7448.

I seriously doubt that Apple begins designing motherboards after an announcement. More likely, their close (though now questionable) relationship with Motorola means this process begins far earlier...
Hrm. I want the 8461s too, but the 7447a isn't a fair comparison. The 7447a's were pin-compatable with the previous chips. So is the 7448. The 8461 are even more different from these than the 970s are: on-die memory controllers, PCI-Express, GigE. Heck, from the sound of all that you don't really need a motherboard. ;)

And I wasn't talking about an announcement, these chips are announced. I'm saying that I don't think apple can produce a working motherboard 6 months before they get sample chips. Also, as much as we hack on apple for pre-announcing computers, I personally don't think they'll announce an 8461-based powerbook months before Freescale even begins producing the very very small run of sample chips. :)

Well, no word about a keynote by Steve Jobs, yet...

Some updates to those PowerMac G5s and perhaps that mythical PowerBook G5 would fit this event. Developers are professionals and deserve these pro-machines.

If Steve has a keynote, you know we're going to be watching one last Tiger demo that'll take an hour :) Probably would be the way to announce the release date of Tiger. Not exactly many spectacular announcements, IMHO, with the current rumors.

Huh? I think it fit that description perfectly...

the thing is Apple has totally gone against tradition in the last year or so.
the Rev D's weren't even announced on a Tuesday this time around. Apple has done a great job in the last 12 months of not announcing, speed bumping , pricing, etc. their products by way of Tradition. they are about as unpredictable as ever.

In my mind, the addition of the drop sensor and scrolling trackpad, by themselves, lift this update above a "simple speedbump".

considering theres now a hack for all aluminum g4 pb's to "unlock" the scrolling trackpad capabilities... i don't consider the scroll a new feature, but rather one that apple kept from us for some time, waiting to make a "simple speedbump" such as this one look like more than it really is.

that said, its a good update, and i just ordered my new 12" PB today.

Sound very good but that is going to cost you your yearly salary
And why have 16GB nobody on this forum has even 8GB so far if I remember correctly, so why dubble what nobody has got ? nor need ( or is this just to be the first to have 16GB maby well then go for it :D )

I have 8GB of ram thats why I asked about the 2GB chips, Motion uses alot of ram really quick with huge number of layers and effects . . .

Plus when you like to keep more than one app open, I use FCP, photoshop, Motion and Compressor all at once, making changes in one updates the others. It a huge time saver for editing. . .

Probably the eMac-it hasn't had a revision since last April-nearly a year-but if it was revisied, it could be released before the WWDC.

I know there are many people here who are just dying for a g5 PB but I'm not one of them.
Given the choice I would take a dual core G4 6 days a week and twice on sunday. I dont expect a significant PB update until at least Sept.
Another thing that I would like to see would be an SD card reader added to the PB.... all new PC laptops seem to have em now.

As far as WWDC predictions. Tiger will either be out already or be released there.
I think we will also see a 3GHZ Power Mac released there. At least if my IBM source is correct. He has told me that IBM will have 2.6 GHZ blade servers in July. Which bodes well for a 3GHZ Power Mac
