I also had a quick question. I am a Student @ UCSB and does anyone know how much the student discounted Tiger could be (comparing to the release of Panther)?
The Apple Store online offers Panther for students for US$69. I'd expect the price to be the same for Tiger unless its retail price is something other than US$129. The same rule applies to other schools that may have lower prices than Apple's.

Was getting your hopes up of a G5 powerbook not enough and now talk of a cell based powerbook has come about?!?! I do not know enough about "cell" technology to give a presentation on it, but I know enough to tell you no way in hell! First of all it has to be release for PS3 which has been developing for it for over 4 years now.... Then IBM workstations will most likely take advantage of this, Apple has the power to do a cell based desktop someday, but seeing a cell based powerbook before 2007-2008 will never happen. We still have to get the G5 in that little notebook, which will most likely be a completly new design, then we have to go a good 3 years with the G5's of incremental speed bumps, the iBook needs to be bumped to G5, as well as mac mini and eMac. Not to mention OS X 10.9 or OS XI (regardless whatever they call it) has to be written to take advantage of cell CPU's. You can smack a cell based mother board in a computer today and the OS would freak out and crash, and if it does run becuase it is still in theory running off a PPC, then it will take no advantage of the other 8 cell's (is 8 right?).... No more talk of cell forget it exist for a while, as well as a G5 powerbook, appearantly some of you are losing sleep over something you have no idea about! I am surprised there isn't much talk of a dual core g4 notebook which most likely we will be smacked with for another year.... I hope not, but man some people just do not realize how big of a task sticking a G5 in a notebook is!! We're talking about putting the new Airbus A380 engine on a friggin learjet!

Ok, here is my prediction, just my guess.

WWDC:
-3.0 GHz PM
-eMac Upgrade
-Tiger Release (if not released earlier)
-iTunes 5
-New brushed metal themed Pro Keyboard + Mouse(with scroll whell + 4 buttons [maybe; with one button and four button options (because some people still like the one button)], bluetooth and corded but with rechargable batteries in the BT version, and a backlit keyboard, and maybe a lit mouse (i.e. Microsoft Stark)

MacWorld Boston (July 11-14):
-HD Powerbook w/dual-core G4 processor and faster Graphics and 2 Button Mouse
-New iPod Mini with color screen and bigger storage+better battery life (if not released earlier)
-2.5GHz xServes

MacWorld Paris:
-New 5th Gen iPod w/ color screen, 40GB storage but with 20GB size casing (if not released earlier [also I don't know if they would sacrifice iPod's signature white for the brushed metal theme])
-iMac G5 upgrade
-Something else

MacWorld 2006 San Francisco:
-Powerbook G5 (finally)
-Cheaper, new Apple Cinema Displays (if not released earlier)

Also, any clues on what the tiger user interface could look like (i.e. Aqua, brushed metal)

(with software updates [i.e. iWork] scattered within all of these events)

These are just my guesses; I am new to this forum, hey guys.

You have one of the most realistic predictions I have yet to see. Regarding Tiger interface a majority of it is a color I can't really describe, it scales much better then the stupid brushed metal though. It is almost like an off white in a sense, go to www.apple.com/macosx and look at the tiger preview, I think a couple apps on there show the new colors. The finder is infact not brushed metal anymore.... Am I allowed to say that? If I am not tell me fast and I will remove it

You have my heart going pity patter with your predictions for MacWorld Boston. Please tell me that you have heard something regarding Apples return to MacWorld Boston. That alone would be awesome. For those items to be released then would be beyond awesome.

Your MWSF prediction will make many happy. Less expensive displays would be nice, hope that it will occur sooner.

Welcome to MacRumors, you've come to the wright place to make predictions.

Response: already into this new forum (its really nice forum, with convincing people)

Ok, first off: MacWorld Boston has been announced (I believed it was announced in conjunction with MW: SF.)

Heres the Link: http://www.macworldexpo.com/live/20/

Second: I might sound like a total Mac OS X nerd, but I am really looking forward to the new User interface for Tiger (even the aqua desktop picture), I know some of you guys think that looks are not important, but they really are. Its human nature.

Third: About the cell technology; I was in an intense discussion about this technology. And what it boiled down to was this: cell technology is very, very, premature. This is technology we probably won't see for a while. But this is the future (or can be), Apple has to look at the present and also the future to ensure its survival. Sure, it seems right now, it just looks cool on paper, but thats how technology is: research and development; trial and error. Anyways, this technology is the first real challenger to the aging x86 process (which needs to be defeated and replaced).

Fourth: The G5 Powerbook; I am not a super knowledgable person on this but: I heard on a forum that IBM has been (and probably have) developed a modified G5 processor with low power consumption, so hopefully we'll see it by the end of this year, or early next year.

A whole lot of predicting, but that's what this place is for. I do hope you are right on all counts. I need a New Fast PowerBook.

The last work out of Steve was that Apple would not participate at MacWorld Boston. I have heard any change in is stance since prior to July 2004. My upmost hope is that he will relinquish, it is some kind of control issue.

What type of time frame are we looking at for IBM to produce and Apple to use this new Cell technology?

It would seem that your prediction on the PowerBook G5 fits with many others. So hopefully all will be correct in this prediction.

For the Cell chip to even be considered by Apple, we would have to see how well it works (aka. PS3), and then a couple of years to customize it for Mac OS X, so probably in the near decade.
