I dont expect a significant PB update until at least Sept.
Another thing that I would like to see would be an SD card reader added to the PB.... all new PC laptops seem to have em now.

As far as WWDC predictions. Tiger will either be out already or be released there.
I think we will also see a 3GHZ Power Mac released there. At least if my IBM source is correct. He has told me that IBM will have 2.6 GHZ blade servers in July. Which bodes well for a 3GHZ Power Mac

Agree with almost everything you say there, however, I'm not so sure about the 3Ghz thing, can Apple really do it? At a minimum they have to come out with 2.8 Ghz I think, cause it's been so long. They have not updated these PowerMacs since June, hard to believe.

*Any* computer or related item that you buy will be "obsolete" 30 minutes after you buy it.

Over the last year most of the computers that Apple makes aren't becoming obsolete in the usual sense. Even the changes haven't been significant enough for a person to feel that they have been left behind. The items come that will bring about obsolescence will be dual core processor, PowerBook G5, and Cell processor.

The only possibility of a G5 powerbook would be if Apple introduces a new notebook/laptop line that are marketed as mobile workstations. Basically, they give in to current trends and produce a 9+lbs. behemoth that's at least 1.7" talls with a 17" high-res screen and a desktop G5 running at 1.8Ghz. It would have even less of a battery life than current Powerbooks have and it would be alarmingly expensive.

I'd still buy it though.

You know, just because something new is released doesn't make your current computer "obsolete." There's always something new coming out "soon." And the great thing about Apple is that they last a lot longer than the average PC before truly becoming obsolete.
Hmm, promise me that a Mac Mini is 100% compatible with Tiger and Core Image and I'll buy one next week...

I don't want "true" obsolescence. Even "near" obsolescene is scary enough for me.

The Mini will have a serious handicap as Apple continues to use the GPU for windowing manipulation such as Exposé, desktop effect, and yes, Core Image. Not that the Mini doesn't have its place and charm.

What matters most is will IBM have the CPU's ready... My guy at IBM leads me to believe they will

Things to come!

Uh oh, just noticed that the imac g5's estimated shipping date has gone from same business day to '3-5 business days'- perhaps a sign of an update? One can only hope :D

In terms of the wwdc, I can foresee the following:

1) Something above dual 3.0ghz  - think about it, Steve really stepped on his (fill in the blank) about this one; he's got to outperform and surprise.

2) Some software updates...perhaps a debut of tiger....I mean, it's got to happen sooner than later; the apple marketing people were drinking some serious 'hater-ade' in terms of "way ahead of longhorn" et al.

3) no powerbook g5. sorry, I just don't see them letting it out the barn until paris...a much more consumer driven audience, the atmosphere of paris...actually, they probably just need more time.

4) last but not least, the "ipod repeat", bon jovi edition! The ipod shuffle plays exclusively "It's my life" in perfect repeat order, eliminating the need for buttons, and consumer logic for that matter. $99 for 80's edition.

Ok, heading to bed now. TGIF. :D

The mini will work fine no problem, you will get all the new features other than visual effects. The only thing that the mini can't take advantage of is actual image manipulation on the fly, which I highly doubt you could care about on a mini regardless. Thoes neat little ripple effects on dashboard widgets, little things that are cool when you see them the first time but lose there "effect" after a while. One of your biggest concerns here is spotlight and you can take full advantage of this, I don't think many people realize this other than developers as to how powerful this is. You must understand this is "WinFS" 3 years earlier people. We are talking instant data access in EVERY program written from tiger on out, no more waiting, searches on the fly, faster program loading times, even more reliable operating systems, this is the next chapter in computing! So yes get the mini, I promise you when you load Tiger you will love it!!

And don't listen to people guessing, I am somewhat new to developing on the mac, and I won't lie I am taking an internship with Microsoft next fall. Regardless I love the Mac, I am already developing many Cocoa apps for tiger for the switch over, I suggest people asking questions in developer forums you will always get a real answer, with no speculation!

My understanding was that the ripple effect was Quartz Extreme-powered, not Core Image-powered...and I know that the Mac mini's graphics card is capable of driving Quartz Extreme.

As far as Spotlight goes, yes it does have quite a bit in common with WinFS; Spotlight's implementation is considerably simpler than WinFS's though. Both are database-driven, but Spotlight isn't tied to HFS in the same way WinFS and NTFS are tied together.

This is great! We could use more Mac software developers.

One rumor I heard was 3.2GHz, but I think most people would be happy with 3.0GHz. I know I would :)

I fully expect 10.4GM to be released before or at wwdc. Most likely right after the keynote. :D Possibly an iWorks 1.1 update. Apple Pro software won't get updates until NAB.

No powerbook G5s ever! Er, ok, maybe sometime, but not at wwdc. People need to start smoking something that gives abit more realistic hallicinations.

Where did the 3.2GHz rumor come from?

Does anyone like the idea of a Tiger release on June 24th, to follow in the footsteps of other X releases?

It's good that you corrected yourself, one can never say never. ;)

I agree with you regarding Tiger's release date. I mentioned this over at MacShrine too.

the newest apply product will have people saying

"mine is bigger than yours"

"ooooh, can i touch it"

"will that thing fit.... on my desk?"

the new 60" display, Oh YEAH!!

now a monitor that that display centerfolds from your PDF documents

Seems like I remember hearing it from an Apple store employee a week or so ago.

The Cell will be a better hype...

"Dude! I got that chip the PS3 has in it in my computer!"

A 60" display from Apple would be pretty cool...but such a beast would require a completely new generation of graphics cards to drive it, would probably require dual-link HDMI to make use of its full resolution, and a new version of Mac OS X that can handle 12,000 pixels horizontally
I worked out what the resolution of a 60" (diagonal) screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio at 100 pixels per inch must be - it's 5088 x 3180 (horz x vert).

EDIT: If anyone's wondering what math I used, here it is:

To find the resolution of a monitor D inches diagonally at P pixels per inch with an aspect ratio of H:V...

First, solve this equation for X:

(HX)^2+(VX)^2=D^2

The horizontal resolution will be:

HPX

The vertical resolution will be:

VPX

Stevie is gunna need the whole week just for his Keynote, many would say it is still going from last year because there is still no 3GHZ G5.

Think of what he has to get through"

Tiger
Powerbook G5 or Dual Core or (Cell)(why not keep our options open)
PowerMac 4GHZ DDR2 PCI Express (I'll say if lucky 3GHZ)
New iBooks (or updates
Update iMac's
Am I really going to have to wait that long for the next iBooks, of will there be a minor speed bump (and maybe BT 2.0 as standard) in say april or may?

We need to revel in the G5 that we have now. As the Cell comes closer to reality, I sure it will receive its due of hype.

What is your assessment of the Cell chip in your PS3?

fcp will need tiger.
if it doesn't appear i'll loose the house, sell the children to michael jackson ,
and sell my soul to the devil.

Hmm, new idea.

Have two Cell chips in the next Mac. The PS3 version and a Mac-specific version. That way we can play all those PS3 games natively :D

Apple in 2005-2006

Ok, here is my prediction, just my guess.

WWDC:
-3.0 GHz PM
-eMac Upgrade
-Tiger Release (if not released earlier)
-iTunes 5
-New brushed metal themed Pro Keyboard + Mouse(with scroll whell + 4 buttons [maybe; with one button and four button options (because some people still like the one button)], bluetooth and corded but with rechargable batteries in the BT version, and a backlit keyboard, and maybe a lit mouse (i.e. Microsoft Stark)

MacWorld Boston (July 11-14):
-HD Powerbook w/dual-core G4 processor and faster Graphics and 2 Button Mouse
-New iPod Mini with color screen and bigger storage+better battery life (if not released earlier)
-2.5GHz xServes

MacWorld Paris:
-New 5th Gen iPod w/ color screen, 40GB storage but with 20GB size casing (if not released earlier [also I don't know if they would sacrifice iPod's signature white for the brushed metal theme])
-iMac G5 upgrade
-Something else

MacWorld 2006 San Francisco:
-Powerbook G5 (finally)
-Cheaper, new Apple Cinema Displays (if not released earlier)

Also, any clues on what the tiger user interface could look like (i.e. Aqua, brushed metal)

(with software updates [i.e. iWork] scattered within all of these events)

These are just my guesses; I am new to this forum, hey guys.

Tiger/Student Version

I also had a quick question. I am a Student @ UCSB and does anyone know how much the student discounted Tiger could be (comparing to the release of Panther)?
