MobileMe web is back up. There are some features still down according to their system status under "account."

I do have this little tidbit:

"Your subscription has been extended until Jun 30, 2012, at no additional charge"

It was set to expire at the end of this Dec.

One thing I still long for: personal domain email. *sigh*

I assume it's been mentioned already (apologies if so), but it's interesting that Apple are now referring to Mac OS X as OS X Lion, in other words they are omitting the word Mac from the name of their Mac operating system.

Foreshadowing much?

see here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/
(still has Mac in the URL though…)

"Information about the MobileMe transition
Last Modified: June 06, 2011

Summary

What's happening to MobileMe?

Effective June 6, 2011, if you had an active MobileMe account, your service has been automatically extended through June 30, 2012, at no additional charge. After this, the MobileMe service will no longer be available.

Products Affected
MobileMe

What will happen to the content I have on MobileMe?

Apple has announced a new service called iCloud which will be available this fall and free for iOS 5 and OS X Lion users. When you sign up for iCloud, you'll be able to keep your me.com or mac.com email address and move your MobileMe mail, contacts, calendars, and bookmarks to the new service.

When iCloud becomes available this fall, more details and instructions will be provided on how to make the move.

Can I create a new MobileMe account?

You can no longer create a new 60-day trial account or start a new subscription using a code contained in a MobileMe box. However, if you have a Family Pack subscription, you can still create new family member accounts.

Can I upgrade to a Family Pack or purchase additional storage?

Effective June 6, 2011, you can no longer upgrade your Individual account to a Family Pack or purchase additional storage for your MobileMe account.

I purchased a MobileMe box and have not used the activation code inside. Can I get refund for it?

Yes. If you have an unused activation code from a MobileMe box, you can submit a refund request."
So Apple has effectively gotten rid of iDisk...

Two question for me right now:

1. What will happen with the "iDisk"? I use it to backup some files there online. Will there be a new iCloud Disk? Even if yes - at the moment, I have 10 GB as a "MobileMe" user which means I can use 5 GB for the "iDisk" and still have the other 5 GB left for mails. It seems that - assuming that there will even be a POSSIBILITY for an "iDisk" kind of space to copy anything on it with the new "iCloud" - this won't be the case anymore.

and

2. Somebody wrote here that he shares one Apple ID with his wife - I, on the other hand, use two Apple IDs for two different countries. I hope this will not limit my iCloud synching possibility when it comes to iTunes music and app purchase synching. I hope that the Apple ID is simply an identify thing and will keep care of the WHOLE content on my iPhone/iPad ...

It means if I rip a CD from an unsigned artist (which I do a lot) and put it into my iMac's iTunes library, I can expect it to be pushed out to my iPad and iPhone over the air. That's why I'll pay $24.99 for the privilege. If you don't see the benefit, then don't sign up.
Cables still exist. Otherwise, I do not have any Apple hardware besides my Macbook. Though that could be easily replace with a virtual machine.

If the artist is unsigned then no. It is only songs that match up to the itunes store that get into the cloud. You could probably try to use the 5GB other storage for this. We will see when it comes out.

Meh, I don't really have a problem with that. It IS an efficient system and I'm flattered Apple copied Android. However, I hope Apple shuts the **** up about the copying and innovating.

you know that is not going to happen.
I am just waiting for the fanboys to start screaming how Android copied that from iOS. I give it 6-7 months.

Hell I almost expect them to start saying Apple change the world of Email for ever with the 5gig inbox space forgetting the fact that Google was the one who really did it and Google offers currently 7gigs growing and 128 megs per year currently.
When Gmail hit the market PAID inbox space was at around 10-25 megs and the free account were 2-3 megs. Gmail comes out changes the landscape for ever with 1gig just given out for free.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

Wireless syncing in iOS 5 was enough to make me happy.

Some cool other features as well.

A good solid keynote I thought.

As opposed to having to do the horrible task of hooking up the iPhone/iPod/iPad to a cord?

I swear, why of all the features do people want wireless syncing so bad? Has society really become that lazy?

Exactly. I don't care that they copied. I care that they copied while suing other companies for copying.

In a perfect world, the iOS 5 announcement will come along with an announcement that they're dropping their suit against Samsung and whoever else they sued for copying. But I fully expect Apple's lawyers to proceed with the suits while the developers keep ripping off Android, webOS and Windows Phone 7.

My mobileme membership is up for renewal in two weeks. Here's what it says:

Your subscription has been extended until Jun 30, 2012, at no additional charge.

And the best feature of Lion is buried at the bottom of the list of all the features in small text...
Resize from any edge - You can now resize a window from any side or corner.
It's about flippin' time! It only took them how many years to realize that resizing a window only from the bottom right corner is totally a pain...

Huh? Why?

I felt the keynote may have been a little underwhelming but I don't see how it was spectacularly bad. What's so arrogant? What's so colossal?

I think Clown Boy is referring to Steve's "deal with it" comment.

Correct

Looks like you are automatically signed up for another free year and then they will migrate you over. So, basically a free year or if you just signed up you still get to use it till June 2012.

That means nothing to me. I am now officially paying for a free service that doesn't technically exist anymore.

So if I'm reading that right, other than all MobileMe services being down, MobileMe is operating normally? :p

Dedicated.
Most iTunes Match users trying to match their pirated songs will not have a clue.

Also checksums can be changed, but unless you want to seriously alter the whole file, then that can be easily addressed.

It's not like videos on YouTube get yanked all the time for copyright infringement...

Whilst I agree with you, Apple would check the checksums of the files that were being uploaded, I severely doubt Apple is under any legal obligation to report the files to the RIAA/MPAA. To do so would draw negative publicity to Apple and violate trust with the consumer.

Apple does crap like this all the time. The iPod Touch apps update that put the iPhone apps on the iPod Touch was $20 to upgrade, then a month later they released iOS 2.0 and it came with those apps for $10.

Then when they upgraded to DRM-Free music while keeping the prices at 99 cents, for my existing content to be changed over I had to pay 30 cents..so essentially it was like paying $1.30 for the same song that some new person could get for $1.

In your eye is coping coping or is part of something that you copied still coping. It is one thing to copy a piece, but another thing to copy the entire form factor, layout, how it functions, the look heck even the feel. Unless of course you think just a piece, and if this is the case shouldn't google be suid apple for some of the coping? I am just wondering if there is a line or is this some personnel thing against apple. Seems to be the later but I could be wrong.
